Although the book, “Small Person With Wings” written by Ellen Booraem, is unique, the theme is similar to the poem ‘Courage’s written by Claude McKay. They both consider courage as something we should all have. “Small Person With Wings” displays the theme through imagery, while ‘Courage’ emphasises it through literature. Both pieces of writing express how you should be courageous and not let the world cut you off. In the book “Small Person With Wings,” Mellie states, “We can do it, even without Grandfather.”-pg 182. She is proclaiming courage by saying she can take on the world, and that they do not need their grandfather to do so. Instead of her wimping out and demuring and saying how they cannot do it without him, she takes courage to tell them they do not need him. Like the poem ‘Courage’ says, “We may join understanding hands”. -staza 4. The poem states how you should join hands with everyone and be courageous together. Instead of being fearful to do things by yourself, if you coadunate with other people, you all can be courageous together. They both connect to being courageous and coming together to do so. …show more content…
In the poem, McKay says, “Like the shy tropic flower that shuts it's lips.”-stanza one. The poet used a simile to help express and show the deep meaning of the text more deliberately. The poet is comparing you to be a shy, apprehensive person, who does not step out of your comfort zone. Which you “shut your lips,” therefore, you are not descending out of your bubble to explore or do things courageous in the world. Another example is, “What is the word? What is your broach?”-stanza one. The poet also used strapping questions to get your mind thinking, and to get you to think about the text more. Using literature helps assist you to understand not just what the words on the paper say, but the deeper meaning behind those dark, faded printed
When a reader grasps a theme throughout any piece of literature, he or she never clearly understands the intent without knowing where the theme came from. The theme that is portrayed in the poem is, often times reconnecting with a loved one cannot only bring happiness, but it can also bring sorrow. This theme was emphasized throughout the poem and without knowing the historical context of the poem, one could not necessarily understand where it came from. In the text it
The structure of the plot of “Speaking of Courage,” a passage from the book The Things they Carried by Tim O’Brien, is designed in a way that gives the reader an insight into the emotions and conflicts of the narrator. The plot is comprised of four parts and progresses as the sun sets and Norman Bowker becomes more desperate to resolve his conflict.
Poems are built with tradition, but in his case, the speaker wants to end tradition just as he wants to end racism. In line two and three, they both end with the same word which is called symploce. Symploce is a combination of anaphora and epistrophe which implies that these two lines are an important point of the figure of speech. The poem was written by stating a cause and effect. The line beginng with by is the cause and I being the effect. Its an explination of how he will fight social injustice. It also helps readers to use and understand the most effective way to fight social
This poem has a true meaning behind it. The meaning of it is of Antwone when he was little. He would cry himself to sleep. He would get beaten over an over again. It just kept building up and finally he cried for help on the inside. Luckily he got help from his psychiatrist before it was too late.
A second way the theme of this poem can be seen is through imagery. The first glimpse of this is in stanza one: Cullen writes, “Pierce to the marrow…and past the bone.” This passage provokes feelings/images of pain in our minds, addressing the same pain one feels when shunned in the world, whether on the basis of appearance, gender, nationality, etc. This describes the part of the theme that says people must care for each other. When pain pierces one’s heart, Cullen proposes that these feelings must “Be fused and mingle, diverse yet single,” with others’, as he states in the second stanza. His meaning is that individuality is good but people must help each other; this is the path to an equal society where all are accepted. A final example of imagery is the “shining and unsheathed” description of a blade in the last stanza. Cullen wants the reader to perceive grief as dangerous and ready to strike. Along with reiterating the fact that all humans must help one another, Cullen now states an ultimatum: either society works to eliminate grief, or they can never be truly content with their lives. The “sword” of grief will come down on the public if they cannot coexist. The unique characteristics of each human being must be cherished and respected, not rejected and ridiculed.
One hundred years ago the world shared one thing in common, experiencing the world’s first war. Many factors that go into the war or had an influence on it had their own specific role. Trench warfare was a common type of fighting where both troops would build their own trenches in order to protect themselves from their enemy on other side separated by no man’s land. Trenches were a key part of the battleground during World War I and became the home and final location for millions of soldiers. Trenches were necessary for American troops survival in World War I because they were an effective form of protection and defense, and were built to prevent injuries and/or deaths.
and that he believes them. The poem also translates into how living in the city is toilsome and that the city is unrelenting. On the other hand it shows how the city can be prosperous and happy with the city’s disadvantages. in the second half of the poem it’s telling how nomatter what is wrong with the city, the people are still proud of who they are.
The story set place during the Civil Right movement in a black household of a little girl and her mother. The poem signal that African Americans are not gifted with their freedom when the girl asked her mother to join the Freedom March “to make our country free” (Randall). Getting their freedom taken away, many African American children march the street of Birmingham to regain their natural rights. Taking a stand to fight for one’s right is the responsibilities of everyone. Another example is the mother’s reason for refusing to let her daughter go march because of her fear of the danger behold there. The mother then direct her daughter to “go to church instead” (Randall). Ironically, the girl meet her fate at the place thought to be the most sacred place. This ironic situation revealed that ignoring the violation of the rules upon civil rights is as dangerous as challenging it.
The different groups of people within the poem represent the different stages of life. At the beginning of the poem it talks about a young boy and his dog and swimmers. Several lines down it talks about “young lovers” and then families.
In 1971 the twenty-sixth amendment brought down the voting age to eighteen for all states. Voting has gained some astonishing ground. From the picked few to everybody that meets the present voting essentials. Initially, the United States constitution had been controlled so that only white citizen men were qualified to vote. Equity has critically affected this law and today both genders have the right to vote. The principles of voting have changed consistently through many of the years. The fight for decency is still present today and has been exemplified already. With different dubiously discussions, it is always critical for any country to be made of values and rights. In spite of the way that it is seen that the US has accomplished full equity;
The second stanza of the poem can be interpreted in many ways. The narrator mentions his fear and how at one point he broke down in tears. To me, this could mean that he is so headstrong about his hatred towards his enemy that it scares him. He couldn’t possibly be scared of his enemy because it was never mentioned that his enemy threatened him. The narrator then starts crying because he never expected to grow so quickly and instead of yelling about his anger, he develops these tears. Just as the unwanted emotions surface, the good emotions come up just as quickly. The narrator smiling could mean that he wants to mask everything with a smile to show his enemy that he’s doing fine. It could also mean that he’s enjoying how everything is unfolding.
Although this is a short poem, there are so many different meanings that can come from the piece. With different literary poetic devices such as similes, imagery, and symbolism different people take away different things from the poem. One of my classmates saw it as an extended metaphor after searching for a deeper connection with the author. After some research on the author, we came to learn that the
As the poem goes on it gets deeper with meaning, sadder even. Lines four and five are the most crucial lines of the poem. Line three ends with the head giving the heart advice. “You will lose the ones you love. They will all go,” this isn’t the first thing someone wants to hear, especially not someone who is aware that they have just lost someone they love. But this is classic, logical advice that your emotions need to hear. What it means is that one day everyone you love will be gone, it is the sad truth of the world we live in. Nothing is forever. “But even the earth will go,
Another meaning I found while reading the poem is that boys and girls in a bad neighborhood can climb the social and economic ladder if they do it together. In the poem, it says that, “both can rise,”
One of the biggest problems facing mankind is global warming. More than 97 perecent of the world scientists believed that human activities mainly the burning of fossil fuel caused global warming. Exacerbated by global warming, the occurrence of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts, rising sea level, floods,and heatwaves are becoming more frequent and sever. In the past two decades global warming induced extreme weather affected almost half of the world population. The scientific evidence is now clear that global warming is a growing threat to society. Hoping to reach a significant agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contained the average rise in global temperature under 2C, leaders around the world have
