If you want to be successful, you got to take risks. For me this would mean taking out a large loan to start my company from the ground up. This loan would then help me start my very own small-scale layer facility. One that won’t compete with large scale commercial growers right away, but one that would allow my company to grow into a stalwart in the layer industry. First off, the company needs a name and the name of my company would be Montgomery Farms due to the fact my middle name is Montgomery, and plus it is a name that will get people’s attention. I would then have to find where to start my company, and the best place to start a small-scale company like this to start is in a small town close to a major road system. Now that the facilities are up we need to start filling them with chickens, eggs, and feed. I would hire a team of scientist to help me create a unique layer chicken that would produce brown eggs, but consume less feed, setting me apart from the rest of the layer industry. This would allow me to create a heritage feel to my eggs while costing me less than my competitors. Now that my team of scientist are working on producing me a unique breed of chicken, I need to start producing the feed to feed them. The one thing that comes from setting up in the rural town of Linden, is that it is located real close to a bunch of local farmers that I could set up contracts with to buy their locally grown grain. This would save me a ton of money because I wouldn’t have to truck the grains in from other places. This grain, then will be made into different forms of feed to help the growth of the chickens through the growing process. With the company finally underway, and the chicks finally starting to hatch, we will need to start moving them to the pullet house where they will be raised in a controlled environment similar to that of the layer facility to get them ready for that environment causing less stress on them. Even under these conditions, Perdue still believes they are healthy enough for human consumption (“Factory Farming”). Over the years, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has travelled around the country to protest with other disgruntled Perdue employees. During one of their protests at the Perdue slaughterhouse in Salisbury, Maryland, Ingrid E. Newkirk, PETA president, came across chickens dying from heatstroke in exposed crates. After further investigation, she found that if the chickens can’t handle the unethical conditions created by the employees and are dead, dying, diseased, or disabled, they will be thrown like lifeless beings into bins labelled “4D” (“Frank Perdue’s Legacy”). The awful fact of the matter is that most of the chickens are disabled as the majority of them suffer from broken bones. This occurs because of the rapid breast growth the company sets as standards for production. The number of hormones and antibiotics that the company infuses into the chickens makes them grow at abnormally fast rates. The normal chicken’s life span is about ten to fifteen years (“Frank Perdue’s Legacy”). Perdue typically slaughters its chickens once they reach the age of two months. Chickens used for egg production typically live in one of many battery cages crammed into a long windowless shed. Ten or more of these hens are packed together in a cage that is about the size of a drawer in a filing cabinet. This causes frustration and fighting between the hens. To keep this from happening, farmers often cut or burn part of their beaks off without medicine to dull the pain. Hens who become sick are usually not given proper veterinary care and are left to die slowly and painfully. Some of the eggs laid by the hens are hatched by another industry to supply more chickens for egg production. Since the hatched male chicks cannot lay eggs, they are often killed by grinding or suffocation. When the hens grow old and stop producing as many eggs, many farmers will deny them proper nutrition to try and “shock” their bodies into laying eggs one last time. Then they are slaughtered and their bodies are used for food scraps.
It’s problematic that we don’t question the food we eat whether it be from McDonalds or a fancy upscale restaurant. We need to be more aware of what is going on around us especially when the food we eat is causing an array of health issues for us. The unsanitary conditions found within the factory farm industry contributes to the pathogens found in the meat we eat. As the saying goes you get what you pay for. The Chicken Coop is a Sports Bar located in San Antonio, Texas that offers a full menu from the bar and kitchen. The Sports Bar is located at 1000 Broadway Street; we chose this as our location because it seems to be the main strip for Alamo Heights. This will be an affective location because of the amount of traffic flow that goes through Broadway. We are also in an area where there are many younger people looking for a new spot to hangout; these young people consist of student at Alamo Heights, Trinity, and Incarnate Word. Broadway is only a few minutes away from downtown San Antonio, and our location will also attract tourists. The Chicken Coop will be a very modern Sports Bar with multiple televisions to play the popular sporting events, or by request the game someone would like to see. We are all about keeping the customer content with their visit.

For centuries, people have taken pleasure in creating plush, green, shaded gardens. Today, over one million people work in the grounds maintenance industry which creates and beautiful landscapes. Among the thousands of workers and businesses that comprise the lawn care industry, two groups exist: large and small companies. Greatly profitable enterprises, as a result of their successful business strategies, customarily invest profits in the company to increase employment and diversify the selection of offered services. Consequently, as the company’s aptitude to service a larger clientele increases, the company will expand and thus increase annual revenue allowing the cycle of growth to continue. Smaller businesses, contrarily, usually do not end operating seasons with enough financial resources to invest in equipment and personnel. Accordingly, the breadth of a small business’s service does not significantly expand from year to year. Over time, however, smaller businesses develop and expand. When smaller companies lack the employees to accomplish newly assumed responsibilities, I find work. Throughout the year, a local business, which manages several lawn care accounts without a lawn care division, outsources several lawn care jobs to me.
