Although smoking is seen as a right of freedom, it has numerous consequences that not only damage smokers. According to David M. Ludington, “Cigarette smoke is the most dangerous of the toxic elements in our environment. Smoking is responsible for almost 500 000 deaths each year in the United States” (1). For the reason that many citizens are not well informed with the effects of smoking, the United States has a high death rate per year. The act of smoking in public should be banned, for it can influence any uninformed individuals to acquire the habit of smoking, which leads to future health risks. Smoking imposes hazardous health problems to anyone nearby, and inclusively contributes to various environmental and social problems.
Smoking can cause imminent health issues to all who choose to smoke. Lung cancer, asthma, heart attacks, and lung diseases are some of the results from smoking. Many do not take this in account of when attracted to smoking. For this reason, it is unethical for authorities to not fully illegalize smoking in public. Individuals have the freedom to smoke, yet the government must oversee the whole impact to the communities. People of all ages are vulnerable to what their naked eye perceives. If and when innocents desire to smoke, they would have now exposed themselves to a path of health risks. This course of action is proven to repeat throughout generations as it has been since American Indians first introduced tobacco to the European settlers. It is
Smoking is an activity that has been around for many years for people to use and adapt into their lifestyle. It is a tool that many people use to help reduce the stresses of life and put them in a comfortable position that enables them to cope with the hectic lifestyle they are living. However, smoking has been scientifically proven to cause many types of cancer, the most common being lung cancer resulting in numerous deaths across the United States. According to BBC, "Smoking is a greater cause of death and disability than any single disease" (BBC, 2). Evidently, the benefits and drawbacks of smoking have been debated for many years, and only recently have some countries have placed a ban in public places such as Britain and the United
Furthermore, numerous states across America have banned smoking in major public places, such as in restaurants, bars, work places, banks, parks and just about any area where there are a lot of people congregating. This is an effort to preserve public health. Even some advocates of smoking bans agree that, “restricting cigarette smoking in public places has clear health benefits and no adverse economic consequences” ("Smoking Bans and the Tobacco Industry"). The world can function pretty well without smoking, in fact studies showed that since the inception of smoking bans, there is a higher likelihood that a smoker may quit and that there is significant reduction in exposure to secondhand smoke. It not only benefits, non-smokers but it also helps smokers to kick the habit. Providing a flurry of reasons why it is so important to strive for the illegality of that which has done so much harm. With it completely illegal, Americans from state to state would undergo a drastic change—but for the better, our life spans would subsequently increase and we would be one step closer to getting rid of the diseases which have plagued us, as humans so long.
The usage and production of cigarettes is not new, but it should finally be put to an end. Everybody seems to put the use of cigarettes on the sideline when it comes to personal self destruct. The media focuses of how the opioid crisis is damaging people and their families, but what about the use of cigarettes? “Researchers calculated that 8.7 percent of all health care spending, or $170 billion a year, is for illness caused by tobacco smoke.”(Reuters, Thomson). Although classified as legal here in the United States of America, smoking is the “Leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States.” ("Campaign Overview.") Granting all this, people do have the right to do whatever they please. However, the production, and usage
Proposed bills are being passed around in many different states to ban the use of cigarette smoking. Banning the controlled substance, nicotine, will put people in jail or up to a 6,250 fine if they continue to use the drug. Even though banning cigarette smoking will be hard to do, many civilians argue a good reason to ban the drug is because of all the lives that tobacco takes. Many places and manufacture companies have already banned and discourage tobacco use on their property due to the dangerous effects tobacco causes. The effects are smoking are very hazardous and causes many diseases. Clinical directors and Health Initiative Programs explain the causes and effects cigarette smoking causes. The ultimate goal is to have the world free
Smoking has become a health hazard to the world today, and there is no better way to settle the problem other than executing illegal smoking. Smoking causes approximately 40% more pollution than diesel car exhaust and is the leading cause of pollution due to its fine particulate matter. Former Professor in medicine, Anthony Rebuck states, “There is a triple threat[danger]… to human health… and it is due to people smoking.” Even though society
The idea of tobacco shifting the way people socialize because of the diverse preference of smokers and non smoking is evident. Public health is the work and devotion of the public. There is an outstanding amount of evidence that smoking has been the leading cause of death in those who smoke and those who are the victim of second hand smoke. Smoking has become a public health issue because of the dangerous effects posed by smokers for non smoking bystanders. If smoking can kill over 400,000 people every year what are the chances that this booming industry can also take the lives of almost a half a million subjected to second hand smoke in the future. The article examines the uphill battle of nicotine in America verses public health. Examples presented in the articles states the concern of those who are not smokers and the public health’s right to protect the public. Such examples are fetuses, babies, women, and men in public settings breathing in the toxic fumes of cigarettes that may ultimately lead to death. The campaign article (2002) states the compelling debate that nonsmokers have as much right to clean air as smokers have
Over the past years, the number of smokers has been on the rise. In today’s society, they are given the tools to be aware of harmful it can be, yet they still chose to do it. Smoking is a force of habit, it is a choice a person makes either to participate or not but it becomes outrageously addictive. The person choosing to smoke may not realize that they are not just harming themselves but they are also harming the ones surrounded by them. It has a negative effect on the people around the smoker because when the nicotine gets in the air it becomes hard to breathe and it travels amongst people faster than they realize. Smoking should be banned in all public places due to the bad influences, healthier lifestyles, and negative effect on
On every cigarette package the surgeon general clearly warns the public of health risks involved with smoking (Marlboro), yet people still decide to smoke. Jennifer is one of those people. What appeal do cigarettes have that cause people to ignore this very important warning? It is also publicly known how addicting smoking is. Why do people decide to chain themselves to this dangerous habit, and more importantly, how can these chains be broken? People try quitting every day. Some are successful, some are not. Jennifer is also one of these people who want to quit. With hopes of realizing why she decided to start smoking, why she continues to smoke, and the real risks involved in her and her family’s lives, she hopes to find a solution to help her break the chains of smoking for good.
(Varnada Karriem-Norwood, 2012) Most of the smoke released from a lit cigarette does not enter the smoker’s lungs, instead the smoke is sent into the air allowing surrounding people to inhale. (Varnada Karriem-Norwood, 2012) Recent statistics show over 126 million nonsmokers are exposed to secondhand smoke regularly at work or at home. (Varnada Karriem-Norwood, 2012) Of that, over 50,000 die from lung cancer despite not smoking a cigarette personally. (Varnada Karriem-Norwood, 2012) By simply working around people who smoke, nonsmokers increase their risk of developing heart related issues by 25-35% and increase their risk of developing lung cancer by 20-30%. (Varnada Karriem-Norwood, 2012) These statistics alone show that smokers are not the only ones affected by inhalation of cigarette smoke. Innocent individuals who chose not to partake in this habit are put at risk just by going to work on a daily basis to be able to support themselves and/or their families. By banning smoking in public places and limiting it to certain areas outside, the exposure to secondhand smoke can be greatly decreased. Individuals who choose not to smoke should be able to go to work in public buildings and not worry about their health risks because of secondhand smoke.
“One thousand Americans stop smoking every day - by dying.”(The Quote Garden). It’s no surprise that smoking is one of the leading causes of death in the nation. There is overwhelming evidence that smoking affects our health. However, when one lights up a cigarette and smokes where other are present, one not only affects his or her own body, but others as well. This refers not only to the inconvenience of someone smoking near you, but also to the affect of secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke has to ability to affect ones health, even if they never touch a cigarette! This poses the question whether or not smoking in public places should be legal.
We all know what we want, we want a society that disapproves of smoking, a society that says no to smoking, a non-smoking society where people live a full life and don’t die from the brutality of smoking.
The next reason is the effect of secondhand smoke. Smokers know that they are putting others’ health and lives in danger, but they continue to smoke. Smoking around people impacts their health as well. Sometimes, these conditions can be even worse than those of the smokers themselves. There is no justice in that. E. Desapriya states, “Recent reports from the US surgeon general show that more than 126 million people are exposed to secondhand smoke every day in the United States, with nearly 22 million of these persons being children” (1158). This proves that eople who smoke not only affect themselves but they also affect those around them because of their habit. It’s time for smokers to understand the risks they put everyone in and take responsibility for it. Smokers argue that their rights are being overstepped if there would be a ban on smoking, but non-smokers also have rights. They have the right to clean, fresh air to breathe. India has implemented a ban on public smoking. It has become mandatory to have no smoking zones in all restaurants and recreational centers. Kirsten Bell describes, “Having conquered the city’s indoor spaces, tobacco control advocates have also pushed for the expansion of smokefree legislation into outdoor environs” (105). Bell is explaining that Canada is also a country that has adopted a smoke-free environment for outdoors. This ban may seem like it is affecting
It is estimated that 36.5 million adults smoke in the United States of America (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). A cigarette contains 7,000 chemicals and 70 of those can cause cancer (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). When someone decides to smoke a cigarette, they are not only choosing to allow those toxins into their body but are imposing all those same toxins on anyone around them. Secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke breathed out by smokers and is considered more dangerous then smoking the cigarette (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention B). Every year 480,000 people in the United States of America die because of cigarette smoking, which is the leading cause of preventable disease and death. Why has this deadly habit become such a casual part of the American life? This habit is not only harmful to the person smoking, but is hurting everyone around them. It may be their decision to smoke and cause damage to their own bodies but when they decide to smoke in public they are infringing on the rights of everyone around them right to protect their health. Smoking should be made illegal because it is not only harmful to the smokers but also causes harm to fetuses in utero, developing children and any other adults who may breathe that smoke in.
Other countries, meanwhile, is also preparing to adopt a new anti-tobacco law. To begin with, smoking in public places will be limited. Cafes, restaurants, entrances of apartment buildings,
Smoking is one of the practices which is considered highly dangerous to our health because it impacts the smoker and the people around them. There are approximately one billion smokers. Smoking is a big issue that the nonsmoker faces. For example, when the smokers smoke in public places like restaurants, universities and other public places it hurts the non-smoker. The non-smoker breathing the cigarette, marijuana or hookah smoke from the smoker do both of them are breathing toxic chemicals. In a cigarette there are more than 5,000 chemicals and that is the easiest way to cause health problems. Smoking should be banned in public places because it effect the non-smokers health such as respiratory system, harm lung cancers, and the last thing is heart disease.
