Reading Log: Snow Falling On Cedars by David Guterson
I chose this particular novel because I enjoy reading about the wars in the past, but this novel included a murder trial for someone who did not commit the crime.

Reading Log #1
The novel opens with an investigation of the murder of Carl Heine, on San Piedro Island, in the winter of 1954. Kabuo Miyamoto is the accused killer of Carl Heine, a father of three and husband of Susan Marie Heine. Kabuo Miyamoto’s wife Hatsue is sat in the court, supporting her husband. The judge of the court is Llewellyn Fieldings and the bailiff is Ed Soames. Carl was a salmon gillnetter in Amity Harbor who seemed to not have any enemies. On September 16th, Carl’s body was found by the sheriff, Art Moran, and the deputy, Abel Martinson, on his boat entitled the Susan Marie entangled in the boat netting. He went through seeing many men die without any help from anyone due to the mass amounts of cross fire. Ishmael left that fight with an amputated arm. Art Moran then flashes back to after the finding of Carl’s body and when he got warrant to search Miyamoto’s boat. Art then found a gaff, covering in blood on the opposite end of the hook. It was then brought to the coroner to test the type of blood it was. After it was tested, it was classified as human blood with a B blood type, which matches Carl’s blood type. The defendant’s attorney later found that the sheriff did not ask the coroner to search for any hair follicles or skin cells that could match Carl’s cells. This novel evokes emotions such as suspense and sadness for the many hardships all of the characters had to go through. The tone of this novel is serious and distant, but also sympathetic to the suffering
