The text has several scenarios where politics interfered with public administration, though one that stood out to me was the case on the snow removal in the blizzard of 2010. In this case, in 2010 the East Coast had very heavy snow accumulation and many people were stuck in their homes. Some residents proceeded to get angry at snow plow drivers and threatened them. Some residents in Washington, D.C. were stuck in their homes and saw snow plows driving by without plowing their roads. In Arlington County, officials had a priority snow removal plan. The plowing started when snow got to two to four inches deep, and then they focused on main areas such as emergency routes, and roads leading to fire stations and hospitals. Crews worked twelve hour
The author wrote the book to teach important lessons about the strength and failures of the American government and to display the long term consequences that take place across the political landscape after major disasters and how it has a long term effect on every individuals lives. Overall the author accomplishes his main goal, to show the general audience that the political system is fragmented and political bureaucracy is very difficult to change. In a democracy, situations like hurricane Katrina and the 9/11 attacks have short term policies that might have a positive impact at that particular moment, but a negative long term effect. This is due to the fact that congress representatives depend on those short term solutions and not the long term effects. In order to get reelected the official individual must remain in good grace with his or her constituency. Even if that means allowing policies that might have a negative effect in the future. It’s the democratic process, and this book does a great job exemplifying those weaknesses of the
Poetry is one of the oldest forms of literature and bridged the gap between oral storytelling and prose. Poetry can be in countless forms, and it can be structured or unorganized. More contemporary poets tend to prefer to use free verse, which has no rules and is completely at the author's discretion for format and flow. Poetry is a creative form of art and can allow for a poet to express their emotions and ideas in an original and cathartic way. As with any other form of literature, similarities and differences can be observed between two works. Two poems, “1999” written by Kevin Gonzalez and “Snowbanks North of the House,” by Robert Bly are examples of poems that have varying components. There are parallels between them, as well as unlike
Mark Smith’s, The Road to Winter (2016), charts the narrative of Australian teenager, Finn, who has survived a virus that has wiped out the majority of his town. Finn is forced to survive, protecting himself from the violent gangs in the North on his own, following the death of his parents. With survival being the main theme of the novel, the characters in The Road to Winter exhibit their exceptional and awful capabilities when their survival is threatened. Despite characters living in seclusion, they will go to any means to protect their own survival. Furthermore, when Finn, Rose or Kas’ lives are threatened, alternate characters will rise to their assistance, completing formidable acts of bravery to save them. Finally, Ramage displays his awful capabilities, threatening others survival, if his own leadership is jeopardised.
Ice ages are well documented in Earth’s history, and they are proven to be relatively frequent. But what if that ice age persisted over not just regions near the poles, but around the equator as well? The term “snowball Earth” refers to a condition where Earth is completely covered by ice. Evidence indicates that snowball Earth may have been around in the Neoproterozoic. In fact, evidence points to the conclusion that these conditions happened three separate times in the Neoproterozoic. A snowball Earth condition is hard to prove, but this theory may explain several different phenomena. However, it is not accepted by all, there is evidence against a snowball Earth as well. Some believe that a snowball Earth would not have been possible in past climate conditions while there are views that defend the idea of more of a ‘slushball’ Earth rather than a planet entirely frozen on the surface.
In Woodrow Wilson’s article “The Study of Administration”, Wilson arguments for a strong and effective public administration were based around two points. First, the fact that the governmental system had expanded greatly from when it first started and as a result had become more complex and had many more parts to it. Second, to split government between politics and administration, as there should not be politics in administration, instead let those who wish to be involved in politics concentrate on politics and those with expertise in the field administer the policies. The case study “The Blast in Centralia No.5: A Mine Disaster No One Stopped”, showed that a bureaucracy that is weak has the same affect on its constituents as no bureaucracy at all. As a result, after reading those two articles, I feel that there is a need for a strong and effective public administration system.
All of us like miners in Centralia No. 5, rely throughout our lives on the immovable juggernaut of impersonal administrative systems” (Stillman 30). It seems that most people as a whole have absent mindedly become too dependent on something as abstract and complicated as public administration. It seems to be public administration and its official’s responsibility to handle any concern in the community as well as make everything flow smoothly.
On this specific case the dichotomy will involved the request made by the seven members of the city council who are usually elected every two years and whose responsibility is to rectified my current position. The support that the city council is asking for seems to be purely political, and the council also expects my full support while presenting face on this 1 % income tax proposal in front of city residents. That is a dichotomy where a public server like me gets frequently involved. However, Frederickson (2015) also states that as a public administrator there is an inherent duty of policy legitimacy and an ethical obligation to protect the interests of the underrepresentated. It is also expected to administer city affairs according to the law, and bureaucratic standards of efficiency as well as fairness (Frederickson,pg.20).
Public administration always entails decision-making that serve the well-being of a collectivity. In “the Blast in Centralia No.5” case, the terrible explosion killed one hundred and eleven men. However, such tragedy was precisely predictable and preventable as the mine was perceived drastically dangerous for long time. Dwight H. Green was one administrator that managed the preceding fall and assigned mine inspector to supervise the mine operators. The moral obligations ambiguities he encountered was obviously the attempt to supervise and restrict mine industry versus political patronage upon the industry. Based on Waldo’s Sources of obligations, he was simultaneously obligated to mine law, nation, organizational norms, professionalism, himself

Political Science Introduction Political science has emerged as one of the most popular subjects for students to study. Political science is widely considered to be the definition of government and other politics, and the consequences of this involvement. This paper will explore the implications of political behavior and the role of government, and compare these issues in the context of one key political event: the day the Triangle Shirtwaist Company caught fire and burned to the ground. Problems
Meg Greenfield was a well-known editor of the Washington Post and wrote her own analysis of the way government officials in Washington interact. This analysis was written in the final years of her life. The book, was titled Washington. Greenfield offered an interesting perspective having been a witness to decades of activity with many of the nation’s political leaders, and her book offers readers a look at what actually goes on inside the government. The book was published in 2001 by PublicAffairs. It is 228 pages but has an additional 30 pages describing Greenfield’s personal background and career written by one of her colleagues. This gives readers understanding of Greenfield that is imperative to understanding her book.
His willingness to listen and engage, coupled with action (doing what he said he would do) clearly set the stage for open dialog and support. He also realized that he needed to clearly communicate his goals and vision, which in-turn gained him buy-in from the department and external entities. He was also a student of “politics”, and demonstrated his prowess in the example given in the text when he was building a new precinct (Cordner, 2014). He realized there would be political and community pressure with this decision, so he made the argument by presenting facts as to why it needed to go where he wanted and left the decision in the hands of the community and city leaders. He did not “play politics”, but allowed the system work by following the principle of political
You make a valid point in regards to local governments needing to be adaptable and the measures to possibly overcome them. I can think of an example of this that happened a few years back; engineering had scheduled a bridge re-construction that rendered the bridge that connected our Canada Day parade route to our parade disband area. The engineering department was incredible about keeping us updated and identifying that we were not able to cross the bridge, as there was no proper guardrails and this was a liability issue. We spent weeks trying to coordinate a solution between departments; each department had valid reasoning regarding their reasoning, controls and regulations surrounding their position for or against proposed

INTRODUCTION: According to Politics in States and Communities (Dye and MacManus, 2009), government in the constitutional form is primarily about conflict resolution. It exists to find solutions or at least to set parameters for implementing solutions within strict limitations. At the state and local levels (which operate together under state authority), governments have the freedom to address issues and conflicts very directly through the governance policies and restrictions they put in place. For the federal government, however, decisions are tied more directly to what the US Constitution says or what it has been interpreted to mean, and it is very difficult to change.
