“C’mon in the sound stage, I’ve got something to tell you guys (“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”).” Walt Disney proceeded to tell the animators his story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which left them all teary eyed. It was then decided that Snow White would be their first feature. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is one of the most successful movies in history (“Disney, Walt, World Book, Inc.”). Previously, it was rumored that Disney would be shutting down his studio, as many others did during the Great Depression, instead he did the opposite and brought Snow White into it’s making (Doyle). Disney’s first estimated production cost was severely low, but he was later on granted a higher budget as his producer thought it would be a hit (“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”). The popularity of Snow White allowed the film to be chosen as the #1 animated film of all time in “America’s 10 Greatest Films in 10 Classic Genres” (“Disney Releases Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”). At the time, many wouldn’t “sit still for an hour and a half to watch a cartoon”, but it opened many opportunities for animated films (Schochet). Animation wasn’t as big of a business as live-action films were, but Snow White helped prove that animated movies could establish a business of their own. The length of animated films would not be limited down to around 15-30 minutes anymore (Doyle). Snow White was able to transform the animation industry within just a few years of it’s release. The film also helped many people find joy during the Great Depression.
