Soccer Supporters Community The word community is primarily referred to our association with a neighborhood, town or city. But besides its dictionary definition, a community is also what holds a certain group of people together based on their interests, beliefs, practices and values. The world is conformed by many of these communities, but there is one that stands out because of its enormity and the passion that is shared within its members, the soccer supporters community. Soccer supporters are the most diehard fans in the sports world; their love and enthusiasm towards a soccer club is beyond normal and their distinctive practices makes them a worldwide community. This community is mainly defined by the devotion soccer fans have …show more content…
A soccer supporter is all about commitment and faith to his club. In addition, this particular community shares the central idea of open masculinity, which helps strengthen the members’ image of their community. Although there are lots of female fans, there is a strong sense of masculinity within the soccer supporters community because soccer is a rough sport, every game is a battle, and most of men leave their heart out supporting their team by chanting most of the game, using foul language and be willing to defend their colors if anyone disrespects them. This acceptance of what might otherwise be considered uncivilized, mannish action is a key belief that soccer fans share (Feig, “Hazards of the Soccer Fan Base”). Since open masculinity was a central idea within soccer fans, soccer hooliganism took place. Hooligans are groups of soccer supporters who travel together with the purpose not to cheer for their respective team, but to threaten, intimidate and assault supporters of other teams. Occasionally, hooliganism is likely to be more severe when there is a game between teams with long-standing rivalries, which are in most cases, teams from the same city. Disputes may take place at any time during game day, even though hooligans often meet in locations away from the stadium to avoid arrest. This soccer violence is related to
Community, what is community? How would you define it? Community can be defined as a geographic location in a way that a group of individuals live in the same area like a neighborhood, a city, a district, a town, or a country. In simplest terms, it is where you live. However, individuals can also feel a sense of community through the place where they grew up or where they often go and visit. It can also be a group of individuals who have certain characteristics in common such as religion, race or ethnicity, culture, beliefs, professional and economic ties, interests, and more. Individuals refer themselves to particular attributes or affinities (what individuals like to do). For example, individuals say I belong to an Asian community or I belong to an art community. As such, community bestows one a sense of identity (who people
The culture of soccer is more than just articles written in sport pages, or rumors about players been transferred from one club to another. It includes a bigger picture that covers many different social, political and economic aspects of the game. In countries where the sport is not that relevant, people refer to it as soccer. In others where the sport is very popular and has been around for a long time, it is referred to as football. When it comes to the sport, there are two very different ideas relevant to how people view it. In said countries where soccer is the national sport, the game is viewed as if it can achieve anything; from having just fun with your friends to helping unite people from around the world. In other countries where the sport is not as much popular, the game is seen as boring and is looked down on. This paper will explore how soccer is growing at such a rapid pace despite the fact that it can be viewed as violent and boring.
Soccer, or football to most of the world, has been one of the oldest sports in the history of the world. It is by far the most viewed, played, and biggest attendance sport throughout the countries, with the exception of the USA. Being the biggest sport in the world means having the biggest fan base as well. This sport has become as close to many fans hearts just as the bible can change people who read it. In this paper, the reader will understand how soccer has changed throughout the years, what the ideals of a unified code are in this sport, as well as the differences and similarities between youth and professional.
A community is a group of people who live in the same area, interact with each other, and share certain norms and values. A community is defined as a locality-based entity, composed of systems of formal organizations reflecting societal institutions, informal groups, and aggregates that are interdependent and whose function or expressed intent is to meet a wide variety of collective needs (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012).
What does community mean? Is it a group of people who live in a distinguished area? Is it a racial, or a religious group? Merriam-Webster describes it as three fold. The first definition is: a group of people living in the same area. The second: a group of people with similar interests. And finally: a group of nations.
A community is usually a place where people who have similar characteristics reside. However the community that I have grown to love is far from what Webster’s dictionary defines it as. I recently moved from a community where I was only exposed to english, spanish and the local dialect however
Soccer is a very popular sport around the world, and because of this, teams have millions of fans around the world as well. These fan clubs bring people together that are addicted to playing or watching the sport. The fans are very passionate about the teams that they support. Whenever they go to games they wear the team colors on shirts, hats, scarves, and even painted on their faces or other parts of their bodies. They will also wear team apparel with the name and shirt number of their favorite player to show other people who they support.
What is a community everyone reading this? A community are people that have common ties and can relate to each other. The Greasers had a community there self , and they all share a social tie. They grew up together an came from the same struggle. The same thing with Socs they all have it good . That is what it means to have a community.
In our western society we define notions of what are gender appropriate behaviours (F. Mason, personal communication, October 23, 2015). Football goes against what is seen as a gender appropriate behavior for women. Football is aggressive and masculine to a point where if a woman wants to play it is easier to be “feminine apologetic” then to just play the sport (e.g., lingerie football). In contrast to lingerie football there is “powder puff football” where the male football players dress up at the cheerleaders and the females dress up as the football players. The males tend to make fun of girls behaviour where in contrast the girls take the game serious and play a hard game of football. The females are trying to prove to the males that they can play just as
What makes a community? To get a better handle on this question, it may be useful to analyze a specific encounter between the individual and his community(s). Let's take, for example, the much-publicized soccer match between Mexico and the U.S. in the summer of 1996. This game received a great deal of media attention because, even though the match was held in Los Angeles, on U.S. soil, the vast majority of fans were cheering for the Mexican team. The U.S. team members, on the other hand, were greeted with a chorus of boos and were pelted with various objects on the field. This trend in urban areas of largely Hispanic support for the teams of other countries was hardly new for U.S. soccer; the players and coaches
People always describe soccer with a culture of passionate and active. After watching the video of Heysel tragedy (Lecture Video Week 3), I start doubting the other side of soccer culture. In this week reading, we were asked to read a novel of a story about how the author himself become crazy soccer fans in decades. The more I read, the more I feel the soccer culture has it aggressive and dominant elements. It will bite you badly when you lose your guard and embrace it. Here is a quotation from the book, "Football culture is so amorphous, so unwieldy, so big that it inevitably attracts more than its fair share of fantasists." (Hornby, 61), that I believe it can partly prove my point.
The definition of community when I google it, is “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” I would describe community as a group of people who have common goals, thoughts, or interests.
Choosing this topic was very easy for me to connect with. I’ve been playing soccer, and watching the professionals since I was a little boy. Soccer is a beautiful game that can bring everyone together. However, spectators and participants have been changing how the game is decided. These so called fans that go to games have been bringing in racism to make the players feel unstable mentally. The players that mostly receive this racism is men of color. The fans are hoping that the players will lash out or possibly bring down their performance, so that their team will win. So while researching this topic it has shown me how different players deal with this. Although most of the players have admitted that at first they would pretend they didn’t hear it or it didn’t happen. However, now these players have been speaking out to get the attention of the spectators, but also the soccer organizations. That in football is no place to accept this harsh discrimination, and these players have been showing different ways on how they are protesting against this. In Europe they call soccer something else, which is football.
Football as it is know outside North America (Soccer) is among the most ubiquitous and beloved sport in the world. The worldwide audience for the FIFA World Cup typically exceeds 1 billion, and hundreds of thousands of spectators flock to watch their countries team participate. One of the fundamental concerns surrounding the game today revolves around the prolonged occurrence of racism, especially racial abuse to players by fans. Omi and Winant (1994) have identified, elements of racism with a strong correlation relating to sport, such as ‘temperament, athletic ability and sexuality.
Football hooliganism is far more than simple violent incidents in football games. It is a very deleterious phenomenon that affects the reputation of all sports, especially the football sector as well as it negatively affects the society. As Rogers (2016) proclaims, “Hooliganism is soccer’s greatest scourge, one that appeared to have been largely cosigned to the past but still ready to appear, like a snake, when the conditions are right” (para.12). Hooliganism is not an outdated phenomenon. It is still until today causing disastrous incidents, human losses, injuries, growing fanaticism and hatred, and destruction of properties of the nation. In fact, most of these aspects can even affect the people in the society who are not interested in or part of the football game. Hooliganism behaviors involve rioting, clashing vandalism,
