Introduction
According to the World Health Organization (W.H.O), Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer disease in the world, killing about 17.5 million people and responsible for about thirty-one (31%) of global death in 2012. It is a major challenge for both the developed and the low and middle income countries (W.H.O. 2016). In the United States, heart disease is also the foremost killer disease. It killed 614,398 people in 2014 which is about twenty-three percent (23%) of the total death in the country (C.D.C. 2016). Heart attack affects about 750,000 every year and 550,000 of these had their first episode while about 200,000 of them experienced their second episode. The C.D.C also reports that half of the sudden heart attacks occur outside of hospital (C.D.C. 2016). The purpose of this article is to use Social and Behavioral Theories of behavior change to critically appraise a technology application created to help in the resolution of heart attack and cardiovascular health issues through real time monitoring.
Instant Heart Rate Design and Function
The instant heart rate is a mobile web-based application that enables users to measure their heart rate instantaneously and keep log of detailed analytics of the heart over time (Azumio, 2016). It was developed by Azumio Incorporated. The instant heart rate is designed to give up-to-date feedback to users so they can monitor their heart health, keep track of their improvements, know when they might need to seek
Explain two models of behaviour change that have been used in recent national health education campaigns.
The Transtheoretical is a theoretical model of behavior change that integrates model of key concepts from other theories. This model is widely used by professionals to effectively promote health behavior change. This model describes how an individual modifies a certain behavior – such as smoking. TTM uses the stages of change as the central concept that integrates the most powerful principles and processes of change from leading theories of counseling and behavior change. The stages of change are pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination. Studies related to change have found that individuals go through series of stages when modifying behavior. Processes of change work
This behavior change project has become a huge part of my everyday life. I lost sight of how important staying in shape affects my overall mental state along with my physical well-being. Having a life that consists of so many activities such as going to school, working, and maintaining a full and happy relationship with the people I care about is hard to balance with just making time for myself. That is why keeping this three day a week workout regime over the past five weeks has been so important; it made me realize that I can make time to focus on just working on myself, and in turn, improve all other aspects of my life. Realizing of course that there are many people in this world that have real life health problems that they seek professional help for. These changes in their lives require a system or a theory that must be applied to develop a strategic an organized way to regulate or change their behavior.
At the beginning of the spring semester, when I read the syllabus for the Models of psychotherapy class assignments, the one that took my attention was about behavioral change exercise. I thought, this exercise could help me through my high temper combined with my anger issues by screaming all the time my family. In all my college experience this was the specific project I was really looking forward to complete. Not just for doing my homework, but also because I was thinking this will be really beneficial for my family well been and my own harmony.
There are similarities and differences when analyzing the components of biological and humanistic approaches to personality. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs express important aspects of biological factors that approaches personality.
Everyone has different challenge in his/her life ,and he/she may have different view on the same thing. Therefore, people will have different goals which they are eager to achieve. Based on what my life looks like and what I need in my life, my behavior change is to exercise at least one hour every day. The reasons why I choose this goal are because I want to spend some time relaxing from my daily life, and get the balance between education and occupation. Moreover, I expect to burn the fat in my body because I spend very little time for workout since I got a job. When I planned to accomplish this behavior change, I knew that challenges or difficulties would appear, I could not avoid them and I could not finish it easily. But I am the kind of person who likes challenge and I am not afraid of it. Therefore, I chose this behavior change. During the process of this behavior change, I met a lot of difficulties and I learn how to get balance well in my life.
Through my behavior change project I have learned many things about myself and life in general. My personal goal was to read two encouraging bible verses every morning. Working towards a goal is not always the easiest thing to do and I have now learned that because I have tried it myself. Although, I did complete my goal it was still hard to work up the motivation to make the effort. I believe through this project some of my views have changed on problem solving and I know that this will help me in the future.
My overall experience with the behavior change project was positive, as I was able to successfully change my sleeping habits. Although there were times when sticking to my behavior change plan was extremely difficult, I was able to stay on track and change my sleeping habits. As a result of my behavior change, I now feel healthier and less fatigued. Because of these physical improvements, important areas of my life, such as school and sports, have improved also. My performance in the classroom and on the basketball court has noticeably become better after making this behavior change.
Over the course of my behavior change project, I ran into several obstacles and the outcome was not quite what I had expected. There ae a few things that I learned during this project from the outrageous cost of healthy food, to what I really struggle with in terms of heathy eating. I started with the intention of eating healthy, but towards the end of the first month, I realized just how costly that can be because I am but a poor college student on a tight budget and sadly I burned a lot of my food budget on fruits and veggies. That was quite an eye opener for me. I also learned that it was not always the content of my meals, but also the size. My wife is much smaller than me and I really started to watch how she eats as opposed to how I eat. Her serving sizes were always much smaller. This taught me a thing or two about what I should be putting on my plate. I also know now that pizza is literally my kryptonite. I know I am doing this BCP, I know I want to lose weight, I know that I want to be healthy, but when I get around pizza I am like a drug addict that can only focus on my drug (pizza). I need to format my lifestyle to stay away from pizza places as much as humanly possible because I will it until it hurts.
I work as a behavioral interventionist. The child I am working with is learning how to regulate her emotions. She tends to screams, elope, or engage in self-harm when she is frustrated. These episodes can be the results of placing a demand, wanting an item, or been told no by a peer or adult. To prevent these behavior she is being taught to mand for access, termination, and attention properly. The strategies that are being taught to her will help her “understand that [she] directs [her] own action and [is] autonomous being”. It is important for her to learn how to ease emotional discomfort because self-regulation may affect her school achievement and popularity with peers.
The Transtheoretical Model lays out stages a person goes through for change. In this case it is making positive changes to prevent childhood obesity. The stages are
Whether it is fighting climate change, saving water or increasing recycling, Government policies increasingly call for people to change their behavior. This might be altering daily habits such as switching off lights or turning off the tap whilst cleaning teeth or influencing purchasing such as buying fuel efficient cursor organic foods.
The “Truth” intervention was a mass media public health initiative that aimed at revealing truths untold by the cigarette manufacturers and was specifically initiated by the American Legacy Foundation. In its most basic form it can be described as an antismoking campaign that mostly targeted young people and thoroughly deglamorized the smoking behavior. Through the television campaigns, the intervention highlighted several things that concerned effects of smoking behavior not only to the young people but also to the adults because it was using the mass media. Firstly, it openly laid out both the short and long term effects of smoking habit and tinted smoking as undesirable
