Social and emotional learning is applying knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions. Social and emotional learning tends to have a positive impact on a student’s academic performance. This semester in freshman seminar we examined social and emotional learning. We applied the skills within social and emotional learning to allow us to understand ourselves and to gain a better insight into the field of nursing. The core topics related to social and emotional learning which we discussed are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management, and self-advocacy.
Self-awareness is an awareness of one’s own character and emotions. Self-awareness was a major topic for discussion in freshman seminar. Self-awareness allowed me to become more aware of who I am as an individual. The discussion in class focused on learning styles and studying techniques. I was able to identify I am a visual learning rather than an audio learn. I became aware of the strengths I have and how to use these strengths to my advantage. I am very responsible and organized, which help improve my studying habits. For example, I study best in a quiet area and I study during the day time when I am most alert. Also, I keep all my classes organized which help make studying for exams easier. Self-awareness also allowed me to become aware of some challenges that will prevent me from succeeding. I learned social media is a weakness I have and sometimes prevents
Self-awareness is a psychological state in which people are aware of their traits, feelings and behavior. Alternately, it can be defined as the realization of oneself as an individual entity (Crisp &Turner,
Social-emotional learning should be required in every classroom because it is important to teach students how to recognize and manage their emotions. This view is shared by Durlak, Dymnicki, Taylor, Weissberg, and Schellinger (2011), who found that school-based efforts to support students' social and emotional learning (SEL) had a positive impact on children’s success in school. Adding to this focus, McCormick, Cappella, O’Connor, and McClowry (2015) found that SEL programs are beneficial for academic performance because they target interpersonal skills such as “appreciating others’ perspectives, initiating and maintaining positive relationships, and using critical thinking skills to make responsible decisions” (pg. 2). The classroom should be a place where students are able to practice both the academic and social-emotional strategies that are necessary to thrive and prosper in the modern world. Recent research has demonstrated that social-emotional learning strategies provide students with the opportunity to learn how to cope with stress, develop empathy, and increase academic achievement.
Preparing students for life success, requires a balanced education that includes social and emotional education. It is important that families, schools and communities come together to achieve this. This article is researching the positive effects, of social and emotional learning of students in kindergarten to eighth grade. This article summarizes three reviews of research on the impact of social and emotional learning (SEL) programs on elementary school and middle age school students. These programs promote social and emotional skills (Weissberg, Taylor, Schellinger, Payton, Pachan, Dymcicki and Durlak, 2008). The SEL programs showed many benefits in both school and after-school settings for students with and without behavioral and
This challenge and the experiences taught me the importance of self-knowledge and the immense role it plays in understanding and improving yourself. Learning about yourself puts you in a better position to control yourself and your life. Self-knowledge is an integral part of coping with difficult situations and provides an arduously earned reward to help you become better for the

The most important lesson I have learned in Development of Self as Nurse is human relationships regarding the tools of communication and ethic, values regarding beliefs, attitude and spirit. Verbal, nonverbal, electronical, interpersonal, and therapeutic are tools of communication. I believe these two concepts are important to my personal development as a professional nurse by understanding the principle of providing proper socialisation processes which starts by approaching, communicating and connecting to a patient creating a positive patient-centered environment. “Sometimes a patient will tell us something over a cup of tea that may seem trivial, but that we can use to help make their stay more comfortable.” says Julie Thompson, Head Nurse of Burton Hospital. “Relative feedback that suggested nurses over look the little things that can make a huge difference. The Initiatives are small, but they are having a big impact.” Finding time to sit down with a patient and talk breaks down the barrier between the professional and patient enables real dialogue to take place (Friend, B., 2013). In order to understand others beliefs, morals and values a professional nursing must have knowledge of one self. “Therefore, understanding

According to our textbook, “Developing self-awareness is a lifelong process of learning about oneself by continually examining one’s beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors. Recognizing stereotypes, biases, and cultural and gender differences are part of the self-awareness process” (p. 177).
According to O'Grady & Malloch, self-awareness is “the ability to recognize and understand one’s moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others” (Porter-O'Grady & Malloch, 2015, p. 405) [Click and drag to move] . Self-awareness is one of the five key elements that make up emotional intelligence, which is one of the important factors related to reaching personal excellence (Porter-O'Grady & Malloch, 2015).
What does it mean to be self-aware? In simple terms, it is the ability to know your behaviour, attitude, and personality. Although self-awareness seems like a simple practice, it can be extremely difficult due to the way we perceive ourselves. We perceive ourselves as something we are not, usually influencing ourselves with the bias of who we think we are in terms of who we want to be. The key to self-awareness is removing bias from the equation and making a truthful evaluation of who we are.
Self-awareness is the capacity for introspection and the ability to recognize oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals.
The second strategy towards improving Self-Awareness is strategy number 6, Watch Yourself Like a Hawk (Bradberry, 2009). By working on this skill I can develop a more objective understand of my own behaviors to process all the information before I act. I need to take a step back analyze the situation, control my emotions to have a clear view of how to handle what is coming with a clear and collective head. I need to be proactive instead of
Further concepts of self, awareness and self-schemas could be effectively used for self-development. It is said that what we think of ourselves, is what we make out of ourselves. Hence self-schema could lead to actions resulting in a state which we want ourselves to be. Generally if we create and idea of self and interact with others in the society, it gives an impression to the society about the way we think and the way we receive things from the society. Great leaders have a dream and confidence in them which is reflected in their actions and the interaction with the society. Hence it is important to be self-aware and understand self very clearly. Further self-concept refers to the act of holding ourselves when we
Children between the ages of eight and eleven years tend to base friendships on shared common interests and compatibility with others. They form strong same-sex friendships, and gender differences begin to occur. For example, boys tend to meet each other in large groups and partake in activities such as sports, whereas girls meet in smaller groups, usually in pairs, and share secrets and confidences.
