Social anxiety disorder
Social phobia, or social anxiety disorder is among of the mental disorder and, is now considered the most common anxiety disorder that is affecting a lot of people in the U.S and outside of the U.S. This mental disorder can be caused by environment factors or even genetics, (Tillfors). Having social anxiety or any kind of mental can make a person’s life miserable because it can cause a lot of distress, it can affect a person’s sleeping habits, a person can start engaging in drug addiction, or commit suicide when it gets worst and almost 40 million people are known to be suffering from mental illnesses including social anxiety. . The existing of social anxiety goes back since early in the 18 century were people also were suffering from social anxiety especially women. At that time men were expected to be the tough while women were known to be the weak since they couldn’t hide their fear and shyness to the public. Allan Horwitz stated that, “Men acted bravely, not because they are compelled to but because it is noble for them to do so and they have developed this nobility. Women were of such of social status that such considerations did not apply to them.”. Medication was very rare back in the days and solutions had to be found to decrease the rate of social anxiety. One of the solution that they found that could help children at an early age to overcome anxiety was by getting them involved with the society since as much as possible (Horwitz, page 34). Children had to be forced to involve themselves with so that they can learn to be social and not have to be anxious when they reach the stage of puberty. And this important because if kids were forced to engaged themselves with the society, then that how they end up being shy and not wanting to talk to people. And parents will consider them being shy. Social anxiety is the result of fear, self consciousness, poor social skills, low self-esteem, the fear of being judged, fear of being the center of attention and the fear of humiliation in public. People with social anxiety disorder suffer from distorted thinking, including false beliefs about social situations and the negative opinions of others. Without treatment, social anxiety disorder can negatively interfere with the person's normal daily routine, including school, work, social activities, and relationship. People who are considered shy are more likely to suffer from social anxiety. Some parents think their children are experiencing shyness but what if it is something more than just being shy? What if it is the social anxiety that they are facing? (Cuncin). Parents need to pay attention to their kids more often, and not assume things. The less people know about social anxiety; the more people will assume that a person is just shy while it is actually something more serious than that.
