Social phobia, or social anxiety disorder is among of the mental disorder and, is now considered the most common anxiety disorder that is affecting a lot of people in the U.S and outside of the U.S. This mental disorder can be caused by environment factors or even genetics, (Tillfors). Having social anxiety or any kind of mental can make a person’s life miserable because it can cause a lot of distress, it can affect a person’s sleeping habits, a person can start engaging in drug addiction, or commit suicide when it gets worst and almost 40 million people are known to be suffering from mental illnesses including social anxiety. . The existing of social anxiety goes back since early in the 18 century were people also were suffering from social anxiety especially women. At that time men were expected to be the tough while women were known to be the weak since they couldn’t hide their fear and shyness to the public. Allan Horwitz stated that, “Men acted bravely, not because they are compelled to but because it is noble for them to do so and they have developed this nobility. Women were of such of social status that such considerations did not apply to them.”. Medication was very rare back in the days and solutions had to be found to decrease the rate of social anxiety. One of the solution that they found that could help children at an early age to overcome anxiety was by getting them involved with the society since as much as possible (Horwitz, page 34). Children had to be forced to involve themselves with so that they can learn to be social and not have to be anxious when they reach the stage of puberty. And this important because if kids were forced to engaged themselves with the society, then that how they end up being shy and not wanting to talk to people. And parents will consider them being shy. Social anxiety is the result of fear, self consciousness, poor social skills, low self-esteem, the fear of being judged, fear of being the center of attention and the fear of humiliation in public. People with social anxiety disorder suffer from distorted thinking, including false beliefs about social situations and the negative opinions of others. Without treatment, social anxiety disorder can negatively interfere with the person's normal daily routine, including school, work, social activities, and relationship. People who are considered shy are more likely to suffer from social anxiety. Some parents think their children are experiencing shyness but what if it is something more than just being shy? What if it is the social anxiety that they are facing? (Cuncin). Parents need to pay attention to their kids more often, and not assume things. Having controlling parents or overprotective parents can make some children get social anxiety. For example, if children have controlling parents or over protective parents, some children lack of good social skills, when children don’t have good social it can lead to social anxiety disorder because without good social skills children wouldn’t know how to communicate with people correctly or they wouldn’t know what to say to that person. Children or adults get social anxiety by seeing other people’s behavior. For example if people see kids or other adults being laughed at or made fun of by others because of what they do or say they will become scared of interacting with people because they think it will happen to them, are likely to get social anxiety of fear that the same thing is going to happen to them. According to James W. Jefferson, two forms of Social phobia exist: specific and generalized. Specific social phobia indicates anxiety limited to few performance situations, while generalized indicates anxiety in all social situations (Jefferson). Many people often interchangeably link this disorder to shyness––a personality trait. However, although they have striking similarities, the two are divergent. To begin with, SAD has an extensive etiology ranging from multiple factors. Furthermore, symptoms of various aspects accompany SAD. Moreover, SAD has detrimental impacts affecting quality of life. Lastly, SAD has numerous methods of treatment. Social Phobia is prevalent in both women and men beginning at the onset of puberty (ADAA).
Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is not a disease, nor can an individual contract it. It is a manifestation of one’s own perception of being rejected, humiliated, ignored or scrutinized, an incapacitating fear of social situations. SAD affects both children and adults, all ethnicities, men and women, although studies have shown that more women develop SAD than men and it is a global disorder. When an individual suffers from SAD, the routine life of these individuals can be affected. However, there is a better life with effective treatment but without treatment it is an agonizing and stressful psychological issue.
It triggers feelings of fear, self consciousness, inadequacy, humiliation, depression, etc. These feelings lead to avoidance of social situations and drug abuse. It is the least understood anxiety disorder, yet 19.2 million people in the United States are diagnosed with it. This makes it very important to understand, though many people do not understand it until they have experienced it themselves. (Stein, 2010) National statistical surveys carried out in 2002 in the United Kingdom suggest that the prevalence rates for social phobias among young people in the UK were around 4%. (National Statistics, 2002)
According to Dr. Thomas A. Richards, social anxiety is, “. . . the fear of interaction with other people that brings on self-consciousness, feelings of being negatively judged and evaluated, and, as a result, leads to avoidance.” (Richards, “What is Social Anxiety?”). People with social anxiety, also called “social phobia”, have few or no romantic or social relationships. This makes people with the disorder feel alone, powerless, and ashamed. Social anxiety is a lot like stage fright, but it is constant throughout the day. Although, for some people the fear may be selective depending on the situation the person is in. Some people may experience the anxiety when starting a conversation with a stranger or person of authority.
