I feel that the social constructionist concept is valuable, and it’s important to remember the danger in not recognizing the fault of systems in place that shape our views. I like the thought (“…the world is not simply reflected back to us through systems of representation”), but I feel not everyone has access to create or critique systems that help us interpret media (“… we actually construct the meaning of the material world through these systems.”(page 13)) I do believe that we interpret the meaning of images and art through the lens of the culture we are surrounded by, but I don’t want to imply viewers always have the power to decide what an image means to them. As a kid I was bombarded with images (and now, but I was much more naïve and impressionable then) that taught me what I believed to be “normal” and “good.” Most kids don’t have well-rounded critical thinking skills to deconstruct what they are seeing to better understand how the images relate to them (are the messages they are getting negative and hurtful? Kids won’t know, they will just feel the effects.) It is dangerous to believe that media made by adults can be deciphered in a healthy way by kids and teenagers who …show more content…
Who even has the power to create systems and create the media that is a product of it should also be scrutinized. For example, the dominating influence in media today (I feel, at least) is a white,
Preparing for this reflection paper was quit challenging because of not knowing which two out of eight perspectives to choose. The social constructionist and humanistic perspective were the two that caught my best interest. The social constructionist perspective basically focuses on how people make sense of the world, a sense of self, and how people interact with each other. The humanistic perspective focuses on the study of the whole person including growth, worth, dignity, and competence.
Culture differences is defined as the integration of social values, beliefs and rules, which guide the behavior from one societal group to another. (Jackson, Guerra, 447) Social construction has shaped many societies, each of them have a different understanding on how social construction defines their life. Societies have practices, traditions, and values, which allows them to have a unique identity. Each one of us comes from diverse cultures that have shaped the way we understand, communicate and perceive the world.
My paper addresses the subject of the social structure theory and some of its subparts. My main focuses were on the social disorganization theory and the anomie and strain theory. However, I did touch on some of the strategies of the ecological theory and the elements of the cultural deviance theory. In order to write this paper I read up on the material in our class textbook and in my social deviance textbook. I also found three web articles from Academic Search Premiere on the school’s database. My findings were that I agree the most with anomie and strain theory. I also concluded that we need to stop putting so much say into what media is telling us because one day they could run us right into the ground.
Media acts a mirror towards the society and owns such a strong influence over it. Jim Morrison, an American singer, says that, “Whoever controls the media, controls the mind.” With the white hero dominating most
Social Construction affects reality by people thinking that one ethnicity is superior than the other ethinicity. People themselves separate and categories each other. As the passage said, "Nondisabled people can live secure in other people's assumption that they are sexualbeings capable of an active sex life, including the potential to have children and beparents." People categorized that being disabled has it flaws and they can't produce children. This is not true disabled people can also, have children. The social construction has people believing they can only fall into certain
Crime is a socially created existence that contains deficiencies of any equitable principles that demarcate into existence rather than being revealed. Social construction means that humans have recognized a phenomenon; characterized and labeling it to some interpretive statute that transcribes the differentiations and likenesses contained by the objects or people while classified. Many categorization patterns are not subjective; otherwise, attempting to make sense of classification would be impossible. Categories have analytical and significant denotations and are utilized to execute the order on the variety of social experiences. Gender, race, and class construct the experiences of all individuals. These facts are extensively acknowledged and ordinarily understood.
For example, in the book the boss baby, the baby began demanding attention and his wants from the very beginning, and each time his parents would answer those demands quickly. This is what contributed to the baby developing a socially constructed idea that if he continued to scream for long and loud enough, he would get what he wanted. As one communication article titled, “Social Constructionism,” published in 2003 said, “The goings-on between people in the course of their everyday lives are seen as the practices during which our shared versions of knowledge are constructed.” (Burr 2003, page
Social constructionist is the postmodern view that there exists no real “truth,” only different forms of “reality” created from social interaction, including conversations with others. The emphasis is on each family member’s view of the problem and its connotation. The model encourages family members to retell their lives and provides them with a new framework. This paper will give a brief summary of the role of social construction in family therapy, the model’s theoretical foundations, and relevant counseling techniques used with couples/families. Lastly, I will use the concepts of the social constructionist model to describe the nature of the problems experienced by and proper treatment for the family in Ordinary People.
Social class is socially constructed through the use of two demonstrations, which is the reading from our text called Media Magic: Making
The way society is taught to be socialized is salient and goes unnoticed, therefore it is valid to claim that gender is socially constructed through our everyday practices, whether we are aware of the construction or not. With socialization beginning the instant a child is born, the process is continuous through out adolescence and varies dramatically across the two genders. With guidance from institutions and arenas such as education, sports, music and the mass media gender seems to be coerced, as it comes with a scripted set of behaviors and attitudes. This essay argues that gender is socially constructed on an everyday basis. To further explain this thesis the essay will draw on early childhood socialization of masculinity and femininity,
I really enjoyed reading your post. Besides social construction being something that people perceive to be true, it is also something that is developed and created by society (“Social Construct,” 2015). Our textbook pointed out that because race and gender are so easily recognizable, they are easy to fit into social construction (Healey & O’Brien, 2015, p. 18). Like you had mentioned, our past history plays a big part in that.
Social constructionist use the term social construction to imply that our understanding of the world in which we live is constructed from the social interactions we have on a daily basis. In reference to identity, social constructionist theory (SCT) proposes that we as social beings actively construct our identities using social tools as the means in which to construct our identities, the foremost one being language.
Through visual anthropology, images, ads, and cartoons are constantly changing individual’s views and the world in which they live in. Images are not merely pictures to state the obvious, they are pictures that have a deeper meaning. Whether the meaning is shown or not shown, they convey representation of something more meaningful in the end. Stuart Hall
I identity with a social constructivist worldview, outline by Creswell. People try to understand the world through their own experiences within their own culture. I tend to question ones’ educational life based on their culture/ community. Through out my education life I have always felt like the black sheep., whether it was because of my religion, ethnicity, race or gender. Because of my experiences, I wonder the effects someone’s culture has on the education. Through educational research we learned that a person culture effects how the they learn. I would like to understand the negative and positive effects your culture has on your education. To complete my research a mixed-methods approach would be beneficial. Quantitative research like
Being a Product Expert is when the salesperson has a lot of knowledge about the product but also other components related to the product such as warranty, maintenance, pricing and services. A crucial part of selling a product is to get your customer to trust in you. You want the customer to feel like you are offering them something that can actually benefit them whether than just trying to get a sale out of them. You want to make the customer feel like they are important. Companies want salespeople who work for them know everything about the product so that they are confident when selling the product. In my opinion, the best way of selling a product/service is to share a personal experience you 've had with the product/service you 're trying to sell. Many buyers usually will ask multiple questions before purchasing a product such as warranty, why they should choose your product over a competitor product and certain specifications about the product. The salesperson should be able to answer these questions when asked, it shows how much knowledge you have on the product. The salesperson should also be able to answer any questions about the product related to maintenance and service such as warranty, protection packages and extended life services. This is beneficial because you want to advise the customer that buying your product comes with special services to extend the life on the product and if anything happens to the product that it can be resolved simply. It also leave the
