How is the social determinant approach used in healthy people 2020 to combat tobacco use, obesity, and physical inactivity-three of the leading contributors to morbidity and mortality in America?
Tobacco use, obesity, and physical inactivity are the leading contributors to morbidity and mortality in the United States. We can decrease the morbidity and mortality of the three leading contributors.
Around 16 million Americans have diseases related to smoking such as lung diseases, diabetes, stroke, cancer, heart disease, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), erectile dysfunction, and vascular diseases, smoking has a role in increasing the risk for many diseases such as tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and certain eye diseases. Around 6 million

The person is considered obese when the body mass index is 30 or more, more than 30 percent of the United States adults are obese, and the obesity is a risk factor for many diseases such as heart diseases, lipid abnormality, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, and cancer.
Obesity occurs due to eating a large amount of food, and or eating high-calorie food, and lack of physical activity, annually, 300,000 deaths in the United States due to obesity.
To reduce the obesity epidemics in the United States through food policies such as increasing the prices and taxes of unhealthy food, and decreasing the prices and taxed of healthy food, making healthy food images more attractive than unhealthy food, encouraging vending machine companies to replace snacks, chocolate, sweetened beverages by organic food, fruits and vegetable, also physical activity has a role in controlling obesity through regular exercise.
Physical inactivity is a leading cause to morbidity and mortality, physical inactivity can cause obesity, and as I mentioned above the obesity causes many diseases, to limit physical inactivity that needs well-designed community with parks, bike path, sidewalks, street lightening, physical education classes, and physical activities in the school, all of these encourage children and adult to do physical
Determinants of health are many factors combined to affect the health of individuals and communities. Health Starts within the environment we live in, the kind of work we do, the schools we attend, our neighborhood and surrendering communities.
1. What are some ways in which social determinants of health (e.g., inequality, education, income, employment, working conditions, gender, ethnicity) influence health? Pg.100-110
As per Healthy People 2020 most Americans do not consume healthy diets and are not physically active at levels needed to maintain proper health. As a result of these behaviors the nation has experienced a dramatic increase in obesity in the U.S with 1 in 3 adults (34.0%) and 1 and 6 children and adolescents (16.2%) are obese. In addition to grave health consequences of being overweight and obese. It significantly raises medical cost and causes a great burden on the U.S medical care delivery system ("Healthy People 2020," 2014, p. 1).
About 40 to 50% of adults in America are at risk for diseases such as stroke, kidney failure, heart attack, heart failure and obesity. Most of these diseases are brought on by hypertension which is brought on by unhealthy eating choices, poor diet and little to no exercise which has devastating effects on the body. Approximately 7 out of 10 Americans is prescribed or takes a prescription pill daily, half of those are diet related illnesses such a diabetes and one third of those individuals is obese. Two trillion medical-care costs are because of chronic diseases most of which are lifestyle habits/choices. Obesity in America costs about taxpayers about $123 billion via Medicare and Medicaid. Now that obesity has risen at an alarming rate, in some cases obesity is considered a disability for those that are physically or mentally impaired by it. Debatably a preventable disease with proper education on food, diet and exercise
Obesity has been a problem in America for multiple years. Obesity rates in the United States are going to increase 37% in the next twenty-five years (Pomeranz 2009). According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases 68.8% of adults are overweight or obese, one in every 20 people or 6.3% of adults have extreme obesity and 3 in every 4 males or 74% of males are obese (Overweight and Obesity 2009). Once someone comes to the realization that they are obese, it can be hard to turn their life around and lose some of that weight that is making them obese. Obesity can be the cause of multiple health related issues that Americans face. For example, obesity can cause type two diabetes, cardio metabolic disease,
Obesity in the United States has been a serious problem affecting Americans and has been continually growing higher in numbers each year. American obesity has nearly doubled within the last 40 years and is now considered to be an epidemic that is affecting millions of people around the nation. According to the National institute of Diabetes and digestive and kidney Diseases, 31% of men and 35% of women are considered seriously overweight, along with 15% of children between the ages of six and nineteen are also overweight. The lack of physical inactivity and extreme poor dieting are catching up to almost the same threat as cigarettes and tobacco smoking. We as a nation are considered to be the fattest country in the world.
Obesity is raging in the United States. America is the fattest country on this earth. It has become a major health concern. It is not only increasing at an alarming rate in adults, but also in children. The risk of obesity is serious; it can cause many problems in the body. In order to cut down on obesity, Americans need to be more aware of what they eat every day, make healthier choices, and get the proper amount of exercise and nutrition.
Have you ever thought about putting yourself in the shoes of someone who is marginalized or considered vulnerable? As for I, I do not have to live everyday wondering if I will be attacked, harmed or the way I will be treated based on who I am. For many people, this is something that they deal with every day.
Obesity is an increasing epidemic affecting the United States in an alarming and negative way. In the past centuries it was rare for Americans to be obese. Today they’re numerous factors contributing to the epidemic but they can be reversed with awareness of the severity of the issue, it’s affect on health, and a willingness to make changes in their daily life.
One of the most important lifestyle factors influencing health outcomes is obesity. Specifically, obesity is widely recognized as a primary cause of poor health outcomes across all socioeconomic and ethnic groups in the US. The CDC reports that “people who are obese, compared to those with a healthy or normal weight, are at increased risk for many serious diseases and health conditions, including… all-causes of death (mortality), high blood pressure (hypertension), type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, certain cancers, and mental illness.” Thus, exploring
Increasingly high obesity rates among the U.S. population have both personal and societal ramifications. For the individual, increased body mass has been linked to a myriad of health issues including heart disease, Type II diabetes, high cholesterol, cancer, strokes, kidney & liver disease, and hypertension. (Wilmore, et al., 2008) On a societal level, the Center for Disease Control estimates that obesity related medical care costs reached a staggering $147 billion in 2008 with obese patients costing $1,400 more per patient than those that fell into a "normal" weight rage (CDC). Obesity-related diseases may also contribute to millions of lost workdays and higher insurance premiums (CNBC).
Obesity is a disease which is associated with enormous body fat that severely escalates the exposure to health issues (Google). Obesity-related conditions can potentially involve heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, and other conditions that are avoidable (cdc).
This assignment will discuss different factors that determine health. According to World Health Organisation, “Health has been defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 2017). There are many social determinants factors that can influence health such as socio-economic factors, income, genders, education and cultures. These factors determine health and wellbeing. For example, some people are healthier than other people.
Obesity is the cause of almost 300,000 thousand deaths annually in the United States. It is one of the most preventable and treatable diseases today. There is a variety of reason why obesity is increasing. Many Americans aren’t very physically active now days and with the thousands of television shows and movies out now most people would rather sit on their couch and watch TV then go out and do something physical. Also the surrounding environment plays a big role on why obesity is on the rise in America. Such as the lack of sidewalks, safe places for recreation, and the overly portioned cheap fast food restaurants on almost every corner.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), diabetes and adiposity cause deaths, lack of quality life and economic effects on a global scale. Most of the conditions and effects can be prevented and are experienced at very early stages due to the lifestyle habits regarding poor diets, physical in-activities and excessive tobacco consumption. The resulting burdens to the families, societies and countries are very huge and unsustainable (Institute of Medicine, 2010). The health and economic imperatives in the improvement of lifestyle behaviors are completely evident. It is therefore important that the right approach be applied in dealing with the causal factors of bad health with the objective of improving the people’s health. The population approach in dealing with health matters creates a more focused dimension in reaching a wider population. The paper makes a proposal to the solutions for promoting better health for the American population by evaluating the possible recommendations.
