The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, uses numerous allusions in its story. The Great Gatsby is a novel that takes place in the summer of 1922, in New York City. It tells of a very wealthy Jay Gatsby, who’s believed to have earned his money in dishonest or illegal ways, and his endeavors to court Daisy Buchannon. Daisy is the wife a another very wealthy Tom Buchannon, and he gets in touch with her through Nick Carraway, a middleclass neighbor who narrates the story. There are many significant and clever allusions and representations in Fitzgerald’s masterpiece The Great Gatsby.

There is new money, old money, and the poor which is represented by the valley of ashes throughout this time period. Also, among the rich and poor there is always those who want more and more and are always greedy at every point in the story. Even though characters want all the money they can get there hands on they also try there hardest to achieve enough love and romance in there lives that their heart desires. Lastly, there is a great deal of betrayal throughout the entire length of the novel The Great Gatsby. It is represented by many characters, their relationships, and their personal lives. Different characters’ personal relationships and personal lives give well-distinguished representations of the problems such as a withering American dream, unequal wealth distribution in America, and betrayal in The Great Gatsby.

An individual whose comedy I believe to be underrated is Scott Aukerman. The reason I love his work is because he never settles for lazy comedy. Instead of taking shortcuts to easy laughs, or even single laughs, Aukerman’s work characteristically pushes through with relentless sequences of jokes. This carefully orchestrated ruthlessness is in stark contrast to the characters he plays and the tone of his works, which are often unassuming, overly-manicured, and squeaky clean. He manages to make strange inversions and comedic faux pas feel natural and enjoyable, and that is not a characteristic I feel many people in comedy are experts in.

Why is affluence so significant? It was not always this way. For hunter-gatherer and agricultural societies, personal properties were insignificant or even disadvantageous unless it was food. For the sake of development and standards of life, this had to change. As wealth gained in value, people also lived better, longer lives, but at a certain point, it began to manipulate the society around it. Some may argue that this occurred around the 1920’s in America. The changes of this time were monumental. People were moving to cities in large numbers, the party lifestyle was adopted by men and women alike due to dramatic social change, and the economy was booming, they were not called “the roaring 20’s” for nothing. The large economy enabled people to gain more wealth than ever. A multitude of people, primarily in older generations, did not encourage this lifestyle, finding it fake, licentious, flashy, and unchristian. This disapproval of change is apparent in The Great Gatsby due to Nick’s distaste for the frivolous and gaudy lifestyles of the East and West Eggers and Gatsby in particular. This distaste, also conveyed heavily by the author, is most significantly formed around the iniquitous value of money and adultery. Ergo, In the novel The Great Gatsby, F.
