Social Media: An Advancement of Civilization Probably one of the more prevalent arguments in the past five to ten years is that of the effects of social media. Is it something we should avoid? Does it affect our personal lives? Is it a detrimental or advantageous tool for society? There’s a wide variety of opinions on the matter, and while many arguments have been made defending (and attacking) both sides of the controversy, research and experiences show that social media is an invaluable asset to our lives today. One of the many pros for social networking is the rapid fast spread of information. One heartwarming example was actually a sad situation turned good, and also an example of how social media can be used to fight bullying; therefore, this is actually two reasons to support social media. An anonymous user on the internet imageboard website 4chan posted a photo of an overweight man named Sean, with the caption “Spotted this specimen trying to dance the other week. He stopped when he saw us laughing.” [1] The photo quickly went viral, and within a few weeks there were thousands of people sympathising for Sean. Among these people were celebrities like popular musicians Pharrell Williams and Ellie Goulding. Many other celebrities and random internet users pitched in money to fly Sean from London (his hometown) to Los Angeles, California for a dance party. Without social media, that picture would’ve floated around between friends of the photographer, never being seen
Social Media is affecting our society in a negative way. From being the number one cause of divorce, ruining people’s careers, and being a haven for teen suicides, many misfortunes arise due to social media. People may not notice its damaging side effects yet it is slowly but surely proving detrimental to all involved in the game. By taking a step back and maintaining self-control, any human being immersed in the frenzy of social media can enjoy its perks without getting caught up in the whirlwind of unfortunate events.
When analyzing the role of social media in American society, several questions come to mind. What is social media and are these social media and networking sites helpful to the people of America; can these sites be used to enhance or do they intrude in the relationships people have with others, and can they be integrated into their daily lives successfully. As the world becomes more and more technology friendly, the internet has transformed into a place that nearly everyone can go to get away. With the constant click of a mouse for some is all it takes to relieve the stress of their day.
In this modern age, the majority of society has adapted to social media and the newest technology to fit around our lives. Technology provides tools that are imperative to the making and the use of other tools. It is a tool in itself.
