Things that get posted on social media can spread extremely fast. Within a couple days or even a couple hours a post can go viral. When a post goes viral millions and millions of people can see it and the content it contains. This can have a severe negative impact on local, national, or even global businesses. “One example is the Papa John’s Pizza Crisis in 2012 that started with a single message on Twitter from a Korean-American customer in New York, who was furious to find a note ‘lady chinky eyes’ written on her receipt by a cashier” (Kim, et. all 1). With this post going viral and being seen by many the people on twitter will immediately relate it to the business. Therefore the business gets a bad reputation for a single individual’s bad

Social media has become one of the main methods for public shaming. Many activists have used it as a way of getting attention with the media, but others have used it as a form of entertainment to watch people’s lives get burned to the ground. Though public shaming can be very entertaining it can also be hurtful and can even cause people to lose their jobs along with their self respect. The article How One Stupid Tweet Blew Up Justine Sacco’s Life, written by Jon Ronson, describes how the punishment for using social media inappropriately can be detrimental to your future

In the case of Panera, LLC. Vs. Michael Nettles and Papa Johns, Panera issued a complaint against an employee of the Papa John’s company for alleged misappropriation of trade secrets. Both companies are based out of Delaware, Panera is stated with the notion that they “consider its customer-facing technological innovations to be an integral part of its consumer appeal in a competitive market” (“Recently Filed Cases”, 2016). Panera is under the assumption that Papa John’s runs their company in a likeminded fashion, and therefore the hiring of Michael Nettles, whom was the former VP of “Architecture in its information Technology department from July 2012-July 2016” (“Recently Filed Cases”, 2016), puts him in a position to release sensitive information that belongs to Panera.

The largest voices in social language are coming from social media platforms. Currently, Twitter and Facebook have amassed an audience of millions and heavily influence culture and dialect in the U.S. Political speech, which uses propaganda, has become a tool for social media platforms. Recently, elections largely relied on media platforms to campaign and permeated social media language, because they were over publicized and indoctrinated into people’s mind. American political speech is unethical because it uses propaganda such as silencing, double speak and slanting, which has affected social media and has become a source of entertainment through pillory. There is an online culture that’s created a new relationship between companies and consumers. This has opened a communication channel that seems to have adopted speech patterns from politics. When people open apps such as Twitter, they frequently see companies degrading their customers for laughs. For the first time, companies such as Wendy's have the freedom to silence people without consequence, because of the wave of silencing that has been seen in our elections. On Wendy’s Twitter there have been instances of people commenting on their food negatively, and mocked using ad hominem. It gives the impression of small banter, but this is just one example where people have made a comment, been shut down, and some forced to take down their comments or accounts due to backlash. This was common in our recent elections, leading
Have you ever been scrolling on Facebook and read the comment of a fellow business owner and thought, “wow, I know they know better”. Society place business owners on a higher pedestal then other citizens. Business owners are viewed as being leaders, well-spoken and educated. One major issue with the current use of social media is the policy of employers investigating their employee’s social media accounts. As Michaela Whitbourn of The Age notes, “The use of social media accounts to assess candidates for work, education and other opportunities was "an area of growing concern"(Whitbourn 1). In a world where political correctness and social justice reign supreme, businesses want to ensure that they are legally secured in the case of any negligence an employee may incur. Today, many companies would consider risqué or controversial social media posts as forms of negligence. There have been many occurrences over the last few years when an employee has been fired after making an insensitive, inappropriate, or immodest post on Facebook or Twitter. For example, “Ehling, a paramedic and nurse was terminated from her employment and sued… the key issues revolved around a Facebook post she made suggesting… paramedics should have allowed a patient with offensive political views to die”(Malouf 2).
