Research shows that over 80 percent of 10-year-old girls fear becoming “fat” (NYC). Young girls are not satisfied by their body image and it is causing many issues. Even though young girls may subject themselves to body image issues, social media destroys girl’s self-worth because of the fashion industry and prolonged time and use on social media. There are countless sources that show research on how girls’ body image is destroyed over time on social media. By middle school, 40-70 percent of students do not like how two or more of their body parts look (NYC). Over 70 percent of students out of highschool admit that they feel worse about their bodies after looking at their social media (Klein). Loud Education is one of the mentoring programs the visits schools to talk about body image. Loud Education wants to encourage businesses to be more responsible with how and where they advertise their products (Roxby). Kelsey Hibberd, founder of Loud Education,“I want to get in there and change the norm, change perceptions for the better. People are drip fed so why not drip feed them with positive things” (Roxby). The aim in the program is to encourage people to think less of the photos they see online and more of themselves (Roxby). This organization also gives teachers ways to promote body confidence in the classroom (Roxby). Many people have a habit of asking others on the internet for opinions on what they look like. This creates body image anxieties. At the same time, women were being more objectified in media, with an extreme emphasis placed on their bodies (Klein). Some people believe that the answer to body anxiety is to give a bigger range of body examples in the media. Dr. Phillipa Diedrichs, University of West of England’s Centre for Appearance Research, said,“The more time spent on Facebook, the more likely people are self-objectify.” Media is everywhere, so telling them to ignore it is not going to work.
