In today’s society, social media plays a very important role in the lives of everyone. Teens especially are heavily influenced by the constant trends and newest gossip that surfaces daily. As a parent, you should of course try to teach your child the rights from wrong when it comes to being active in the social world. However, in some cases, it may be hard for teens to understand the seriousness of participating in safe social media use. Practicing safe online and cellphone use begins at home. Parents should have a serious talk with their teens about the real- life dangers of online use, and basic online and cellphone rules in order to keep them safe. Although the internet can be an entertaining place with a lot of positives, there are also people online who use the internet for inappropriate reasons which makes it hard for people to effectively interact online at times. For example, “catfishing” has become popular over a wide range of social networks. Catfishing is pretending to be someone else online in order to talk to someone, or many people from an anonymous but realistic account. Catfishing became even more popular and known when the television network MTV presented a documentary on it, which later turned into full seasons of a television show. Catfish featured the dangers of talking to people online. Although the situations for the people on the show were sad, it taught the important lesson that some things and people that are online are not always what they seem.
