Gabriella Martinez Ms. Cooney English CP10 30 October 2017 Social Media and Society Nayeli constantly checks her phone throughout the day. Uploading pictures to social media is what she revolves her mood around. If she doesn’t get as many likes or comments, it really brings down her mood. She follows a large amount of celebrities, especially ones who have gotten all types of surgery. One day, she soon started to realize that she didn’t look “as beautiful” as the models she was following. She thought she wasn’t skinny enough. Nayeli had then decided to stop eating as much, and even skip most meals. This soon caused Nayeli to become very ill, and almost killed her. This evidence shows that phones take attention away from learning. This can soon lead to academic failure, and academic failure can stress students out, and in some cases, cause them to develop mental illnesses such as anxiety or depression. The most important things in a student’s life are studying, learning good habits and gaining knowledge to become a person with moral character. But today, as we see in various studies, this learning process is seriously jeopardized by students becoming entrapped by the ploys of social networking. Students neglect their studies by spending time on social networking websites rather than studying or interacting with people in person. Constantly participating in social networking can negatively affect their grades or ruin one’s journeys to their future careers. Getting too involved in social media can lead to an addiction that inculcates bad habits. Students prefer to chat with friends for hours, and this leads to a waste of time that could have been used for studying, playing or learning new skills. This soon results in not finishing homework, doing worse on tests, and overall participating less in their academic life. People shouldn’t use social media as much because not only does it distract an individual’s academic life, it can also destroy their body image.
