Is Social Media Beneficial to Our Society? Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. What do these four sites have in common? They are all social media platforms. A social media platform is considered websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. We use these sites every day; our friends, and co-workers use these sites everyday. Why do people use these sites? What makes them interesting? Social media has been around for awhile now, it’s not a new thing. “The digital world is creating new opportunities for young people to grapple with, [including] social norms, explore interests, develop technical skills and work on new forms of self-expression.” (Goff). Kids use social media to connect with their peers and other kids their age, teenagers use it to express creativity, adults use it mostly to keep up with their kids, and their friends, and the elderly use it to talk to their grandchildren and kids, and to keep up with the world. Thus social media is beneficial to our society. Many argue that first amendment grants us the freedom of speech; however, to what extent should our activity on social media be protected as free speech under the first amendment? The people’s activity on social media should be protected as free speech unless the activity is determined to be an actual threat towards someone because there are different interpretations, our comments reflect our opinions, and the right of free speech is the foundation of our country and forms what this country is about.

Social medias’ fake news is spread by a heap of people that are easily convinced by false statements. We are driven by “likes,” “comments,” and “followers.” Not caring what our peers thought, our middle school selves posted anything and everything. Now, as seniors and having had access to social media for an abundance of years, we are far more cautious about what we post but not in the way you might imagine. Instagram is a resourceful tool but, if used incorrectly, could impair your social status.
Social media plays a huge role in our lives, It has its own pros and cons. Most of them are for our favors if we use it wisely. It can help us become more productive and efficient at work school and day to day activity. For example, youtube is great place to watch videos that help us to learn from other people work which is associated with our task for work/school, but we must be very careful while using it to the limit. Also social media can help us reach out with every information at our finger tip and we make it a tendency to google and search every small thing which makes us vunerable to using it often, therefore limiting our attention span as we get so dependant on using it that we rely for it most of the time which makes us dull without it, in most cases.
