Discuss the challenges that social media poses to society
As a result of the widespread use of social media, an increasing number of challenges are emerging. Some argue that social media is beneficial as it leads to connections between people all over the world, whereas others suggest it affects our life satisfaction and has a negative impact on our overall wellbeing through the challenges it presents in communication, relationships and mental health.
With the advancement in technology, communication has grown. It is now easier and cheaper to communicate and connect with people across the world. University professors Christakis and Shakya (2017) declare that “The more you use Facebook, the worse you feel.” Since their article was published in the Harvard Business Review, it is clear that it is aimed at educated young, well-paid adults (20-30). The inclusion of an emotive image of a young man in a dark room with his face lit up by only a phone screen, helps a reader connect with the main points if that emotion is prevalent in the reader. Equally, a response written by Borden (20171) an accounting professor conveys the same idea as Christakis and Shakya. The blog targets older academics including professors and business partners through the use of academic language “Social media has one the most substantial impacts on society.”

Social Media is a controversial topic. For this reason, many people have argued whether social media is positive or negative. Nevertheless, there is more evidence supporting the idea that social media has had positive implications on society. Reasons for this include that social media can help your career and that it can aid adolescents when it comes to socializing. However, there are several other individuals who hold on to a different view.
Social media has taken the world by storm. In the article “When Your Smartphone Is Too Smart for Your Own Good: How Social Media Alters Human Relationships” by Lori Ann Wagner, a researched survey found that 73% of adults online use some type of social networking platform, while 42% use multiple platforms. With social media being seen and used by so many people, is there a problem with it influencing and affecting humans in some sort of way? Many people would argue yes to social media negatively affecting humans, while others disagree to that idea. Social media is seen mostly affecting social relationships between people. Social media should not be used as one’s primary social outlet as it inhibits natural social skills, interferes with face-to-face relationships, and provides empty social connections.
In today's time, social media is widely used by most people and most who use it claims that it is beneficial to their everyday lives. Many people argue that social media is bad for others because it is distracting them and causing themselves harm by falling or running into others but that is because they dont pay attention, with the right amount of awareness it is very helpful. For some the only way to stay connected to businesses, familly, friends, and world problems is through places like Facebook and Twitter. Social media is more helpful in more ways than one especially when trying to get communications long distances.
Like technology, our species has adapted to fit modern times. Through these adaptations, we have begun to communicate through our newly developed technology by means of social media. In today’s society, we are surrounded by sites such as Facebook, Twitter, E-Mail, and various other websites that can often times consume our lives. While social media has plenty of advantages, it also has disadvantages that often times get ignored. As Internet users, it is important to examine these disadvantages and make sure we understand the negative sides to social media.
Social media is a powerful tool that can allow people from all over the world to strengthen their relationships or on the other hand, destroy them as well within a single stroke of a key. This form of technology allows people to have the capability and capacity to meet new people from all over the world. However, with inappropriate usage it can eventually lead it to being a bane for its users. Based on research conducted, over 70% of all internet users are users of social media. [1] With such great usage among people, this has the ability to both, strengthen or destroy a relationship. However, I strongly feel that social media is an influential piece of software to strengthen relationships with people.
Social media is on a steady rise and the more popular it becomes, the more people debate whether it is benefiting or worsening our daily lives. Kelly Wallace discusses the pros of social media when it is used properly, while Rachel Zupek argues the danger we put ourselves in by using social media to express ourselves. In spite of the negative depictions of social media, Wallace proves that it boosts self-confidence and strengthens relationships showing that the positives outweigh the negatives.
“Social media allows people to connect with each other to create and share information. It is people-powered communication, an authentic dialogue motivated by a basic human desire to share information” (CIPD, Social Media and Employee Voice Report 2013). ‘Click’ and my message is on its way to my friend’s Facebook inbox hundred of miles away. The astonishing speed of how quick we can communicate in today’s societies, all thanks to social media. The invention of Facebook simplified everything we know about communication. We can connect to people whenever and wherever, sharing information has never been more convenient and exciting. In Shane Hipps’ Article, “ Is Facebook Killing Our Souls?,” he has no intention to impede technological advancements, instead he wants users to understand technologies with insights. According to my research, although Hipps ' points has some merits, I disagree with him because he overgeneralized the impacts that Facebook and other social media has on users’ behaviors and identities.
