With a vast access to so many different ways to get information. The challenge is, can it be trusted? In 2009, after the death of music composer, Maurice Jarre, twenty-two-year-old Shane Fitzgerald from Dublin University conducted an experiment to see how social networks uphold the accuracy of their information. In his attempt to determine this, he created a fake quote and posted it under Wikipedia as something said by the famous composer. Months passed and many people believed this was a real quote until the college student came forward. In an interview after this event Fitzgerald stated, “once anything is printed enough times in the media without challenge, it becomes fact." The characteristics of those that get most of their information from social networks are more inclined to be fast pace and accept what they see as truth. They do not search to see how accurate or reliable the information is as long as everyone else uses it. This type of person has entrusted their interest in the belief that both television and social media’s information are the same, which may distort their view of the …show more content…
Social media by itself is not a threat, for it was created for the purpose of entertainment, like television. Although television also holds the important job of conveying information using the news. In our current times, social media is the new method of obtaining information quickly about events. Even though when most people search social media rather than actual news companies, they do not realize how unreliable it truly is. Twitter especially is credited with playing a role as a source of credible information. It has evolved far beyond its origin of being a simple way to keep in contact with friends. In a recent study done by ING, it was shown that one-third of journalists said social media posts are not a reliable source of information. When news of recent events is given on Twitter, it is called into question because it is unable to be determined how true it is. As stated by Johnson and Kaye we must rely on “the credibility of its user.” This proves that social networks are not credible sources at all and Twitter is a social network so how can it be trusted? Even knowing this, we still consider consumer opinion to be more reliable than a statement by an organization. If social media continues to do the job of the news not only will television be affected because of the lack of viewers, but we the people will no longer know what is actuality or lies. No one likes to be lied to, so why

People should be prosecuted over things they say over social media. People say hurtful things over social media and personally they should be prosecuted and taken to court for things they say. Children don’t want to be labeled as a “ rat” or “snitch” in school so that is part of the reason why no one really tells a teacher about what is going on with them. Threats should not be taken lightly.
Recognizing his strategy to build up his credibility, he uses Joshua Malina to demonstrate his success through social media. “Mr. Malina has worked in television for more than two decades, with recurring roles on a handful of hit shows, including The West Wing and The Big Bang Theory. Still, by his own unembarrassed estimation, Mr. Malina is hardly a star” (2). This quote allows the reader to comprehend the actor’s situation before social media takes a turn in his life. “I’m 25-plus years into my career, and it’s only with Scandal and Twitter that the concept of my having fans with a last name other than Malina has even entered into my consciousness” (2). The author built up his credibility (ethos) with an example of a man who has experienced the blessing of social media. The reader will suddenly know that the article is credible because of reading Malina’s social media experience. Another successful technique Farhad displays in his article to appeal towards ethos is the knowledge he has of the abundant social media services he samples. He briefly explains each and every popular social media network and how it has increased unity in the community hence affecting television. “Last year, Snapchat, the picture-messaging app favored by teenagers and college students, began creating Live Stories, a series of daily video vignettes stitched from multiple users’ perspectives and covering a range

To begin, when seeking information online, it can be difficult to identify between true fact and false data; therefore, using a tool to eliminate the chances of obtaining false information will be beneficial when researching. “Is it a primary or secondary source? … Are methods or references provided?... Who published the information?... Was it peer-reviewed” (Gratz). These questions
Each time we go to the websites we see eye-catching attention. Wherever we may go searching for data on Google, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram or YouTube we find these things. While advertising, not all these websites and organizations feel like they must tell the truth. We cannot always depend on social media platforms to find out the lie or untruth. The other article, “Is Twitter Bad for National Security?” by Tony Bradley, argues that Twitter could have dangerous effects on our nation’s
It’s become such a problem that the founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, has taken to his own platform to address it. When discussing how his organization has made progress in enabling the community to flag hoaxes and fake news he said, “This is an area where I believe we must proceed very carefully though. Identifying the "truth" is complicated. While some hoaxes can be completely debunked, a greater amount of content, including from mainstream sources, often gets the basic idea right but some details wrong or omitted.” he continues, “An even greater volume of stories express an opinion that many will disagree with and flag as incorrect even when factual.... I believe we must be extremely cautious about becoming arbiters of truth ourselves” (Zuckerberg). Mr. Zuckerberg hits a key point of contention in combatting falsehoods, and that is in not being an dictating force what facts are good or bad. Who then is responsible for fact checking if the media we consume can’t always be trusted? A study from Stanford researchers that evaluated students' ability to assess information sources and described the results as a "threat to democracy."
