The Corruption of The Youth Is there too much anxiety and depression seen in the younger generations? Who or what is to blame for the negative image teenagers view of themselves? Most teenagers use social media, so should that be the blame? The simple answer is yes, or at least a major contributing factor. Social media can be classified as propaganda that is rapidly progressing. From the way technology was brought in the world, the use is becoming adapted through generations. As it grows, people are becoming obsessed with the idea of it. Many are losing out on explorations learned as young children. Even though there are educational advantages of the youth through technological developments, it moreso promotes corruption. The technology today is much less simple than the technology previously created. Telecommunication was first brought to existence in 1947, but more important is the first mobile telephone introduced in Sweden in the 1960’s. Sweden focused on the reliance of a car through technology. So in other words, the system had been animated with the connection from a handset, which remained to be operated to forward incoming calls. As the first generation of cell phones approached, cell towers had been built all around. That is how calls had been made. Cell phones that were in use had to be connected to a cell tower. They called this the “Analog Cellular Networks” (Brookes). Cell phones were just strictly used for calling. Pagers had been created that just let off
Kardaras, Nicolas. "Generation Z: Online and at Risk?." Scientific American Mind, vol. 27, no. 5, Sep/Oct 2016, pp. 64-9. MasterFILE Premier. Kardars discuss generation z use of social media affecting them negatively. He opens his article with a story of Heidi who becomes addicted to social media when her school issues her a Chromebook. Before Heidi is issued the laptop, she was a sweet innocent girl and after having it for a semester she became someone her parents could not recognize. He states that social media is a “perfect storm” for humans because having a social connection key to “happiness and health”. Having the ability to always use social media leads to hyper texting the illusion of a real connection making it hard for teens to have face to face conversations, making a teens become “glow kid[s]“, someone who is raised on mostly digital social interactions. Facebook depression” can result in the teen to have lower grades and behavior problems in teens. He concludes his article with facts proving that Facebook can become addictive in some people. This source helps support my thesis that Facebook affects teens mental health.
We live in an era ruled by social media, primarily when it comes to teenagers, social media is used for everything. From communicating with family and friends to being used as a news outlet, and even advertisement for business and companies. This article is titled “Social Media: What's Not to Like,” written by Alison Pearce Stevens. The topic of this essay is the effect social media can have on teenagers. Social media, on one hand, can be used as a great way to share with the world and boost teens’ self-esteem. On the other hand, social media can be used as a place for bullying, body shaming and can cause depression or even suicide in teens.
Older generations don’t realize how much technology has affected this generation of teenagers, along with the social media that comes along with the technology. As stated in “How Social Media Changed Teens’ Lives Forever”; “Negative posts or comments also can do great damage to a teen’s self-esteem.” (Ashley Black, Thomas Atseff and Colleen Kaveney) While many parents think social media is just a way to connect with others, many teenagers take it for granted. For example, “quitting social media because it made her miserable and obsessed with appearing perfect online”, is what a teenager felt about social media and what it has done to her. Though many think that social media is a great way to connect, teenagers take it to another level.
Social media influences a teenager's self-esteem because it can lower or boost their self-esteem. It can lower a teenager's self-esteem by having cyberbullies on the internet putting them down with their negative opinions of the teen which can also drive the teens to feel hurt, or discourgaed by letting others opinions get to them. Social media can boost a teenager’s self-esteem by having a lots of friends or followers, because they’ll feel cool and popular. It can also boost their self-esteem because if they post a selfie of themselves on social media and everybody is commenting on how pretty or how nice they look, they will feel
Social media has many negative effects linked to teenagers today. Research has shown that social media has a harsh impact on the mental health of its users. This research suggests that social media can cause depression. Highly idealized representations of peers on social media may create elicit feelings of envy and the belief that others lead happier, more successful lives (Chowdhry). Although depression cannot be linked to one specific cause, there are many different factors that can contribute to it. With this being said, individuals will compare themselves negatively to others on social media because they believe other individuals sharing content are living better lives than they are. This will result in people feeling bad about themselves. Another impact social media has on mental health is that it is addictive. Although social media addiction is not a formal clinical diagnoses, it is reasonable to say that many people spend a lot of time on social media. Researchers have suggested that the excessive use of online social networking is particularly problematic to young people. It is claimed that those people who are addicted experience symptoms similar to those who suffer from addictions to substances and other behaviours. As stated above, although social media addiction is not classified as a formal clinical diagnoses, it has been compared to those who suffer from far more serious addictions. In addition to other impacts social media has on mental health, it can severely impact the self-esteem of those who are on social media platforms. Social media can have a negative effect on the
The article “Is social media ruining our children?” is an effective work as a whole. Overall, Sreedhar does a good job by supporting his opinion on how social media have bear responsibility for anxiety and depression in adolescents, teenagers, and young adults. And he uses logos by the survey conducted by credible source and proposal a clear solution from experts.
In contrast to all these, the internet (social media) has wrecked the mind of teenagers by inflicting them with negatives thoughts and ideas about how the world whirls around them. Then again, the essence of giving out their personal information to strangers they do not even know nothing about.
Communication barriers are not the only issue that has been brought on by social media. Extensive social media use has also been known to affect a person’s self-esteem. Some individuals suffer from a low self-esteem and limit themselves to social media in hopes to create a different image of them. According to Charles Cooley, “The thing that moves us to pride or shame is not the mere mechanical reflection of ourselves, but an imputed sentiment, the imagined effect of this reflection upon another's mind" (Morine, 2009). For some teens and young adults, social media may help them open up and achieve a higher self-esteem. On the other hand, social media on other teens and young adults may have a completely opposite effect. In an article titled, Is Facebook Making Your Child Depressed, it is stated that social media websites such as Facebook “can create a skewed reality that makes teens feel alienated” (PR, 2012). When a person, that is not completely happy with their life, goes onto social media and reads all about other people enjoying a multitude of activities and enjoying their lives this could
The cell phone has transformed over the years, changing from a bulky phone to a compact device containing the capabilities of a computer. According to Russell Ware, a cell phone is “any portable telephone which uses cellular network technology to make and receive calls.” A cell phone works through a maze of cellular towers that cross the world. This connects mobile devices that allow texting and calling between two cellular devices. Motorola produced the first commercially available cell phone which officially went on sale in 1984 (Ware). This cell phone was called the DynaTAC 8000x which cost an extreme amount of money and only contained a battery of 30 minutes (Ware). Since this first masterpiece, the cell phone has advanced and developed into an entirely new object. Cell phones today contain the ability to text, call, use the internet, play games, and store files (Cell Phone).
In the United States of America, many rights are given to the people. Two of these rights are freedom of speech, and freedom of press. These were intended to let the truth be told and not be regulated by the government. However, with the amount of bias in everyday news, it definitely seems to be controlled. “Press” is a broad term, and it applies to both independent journalists as well as big name news organizations. Opinions should be able to be voiced, but they should be announced as such, however many articles state opinions as if they are the truth. This is what needs to stop. The United States government needs to take action by regulating the media in order to keep bias out, and allow for freedom of press and speech to tell the truth.
One in 12 high school students has attempted suicide in the past year due to social media (Rosen 2). The problem with social media is that, it's causing changes in eating and sleeping habits (Rosen 4). Depression is also taking a major role in this negativity (Rosen 3). Social media is said to be the leading cause of depression and anxiety (Ring 1). Teens are being diagnosed with disorders due to social media (Rosen 3). 10,000 adolescents showed that almost 1 in 3 teens have an anxiety disorder (Ring 1). Social media is destroying teens
Power can be abused in many ways and Technology is one of the sources. Technology can be abused in many ways through what people has created such as social media, computers, cellphones, the internet, advertisement, and entertainment and many more. Technology has the potential to hurt people depending on the user mood. They can use the technology to steal people's identity and privacy or be able to cyber bully their victims. On this paper I will be breaking down everything that I have mentioned and how technology can be corrupted.
It’s hard to believe how drastic the cell phone has evolved. It’s hard to believe that when the first cell phone was made it was only capable of making simple phone calls, only if you have signal. Today, phones such as the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S5, are capable of doing infinite things, such as texting, long distant call, GPS, locate anything, surf the web, download countless of apps filled with games, video chat, and many more. Today’s cell phone could even speak to you, understand you, and whatever you command, it does. Yes the cell phone is such a power tool; however, it didn’t start off like that. When the cell phone was accessible for the US, people were so amused at the fact that a simple device can make short distant calls. According to the FCC, “In spite
Society has a huge influence on the world—both positive and negative. On the negative end, “We are surrounded by children, who since they were born, watch us living like robots, and think it’s the norm” (Turk). What example are we setting for younger people by spending most of our time on our phones? “All this technology we have is just an illusion…A world where we are slaves to the technology that we mastered…” Kids nowadays are basically being brought up in life with phones in their hands. They think that it is normal for them to be on their phones all the time, instead of actually talking to people, because they see it everywhere they go. They do not know any better. This is culturally normal for them. Social media can cause people to lie. Because we want to come across as more interesting than we are, society will post
When cell phones were first introduced, they were large and expensive. In 1983 the first truly mobile phone was released by Motorola. It was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. To some people it is known as the “Zack Morris phone.” He used this phone on a regular basis in a popular television show called “Saved by the bell” which took place in the late 80’s to early 90’s. It was an extremely large device compared to the ones we are used to now and it was only designed to make phone calls. It was not often used for personal use like today. “They were primarily used in the sales and business world, but not for personal use like you see today” said Kreg Jones, an industrial designer and industrial design instructor at the Art institute of Philadelphia (“The History and Evolution of Cell Phones”). Initially cell phones could only make phone calls. In later cell phones eventually voicemail was added, but the main feature was still talking. Eventually companies realized the potential to integrate other technologies into the phones.
