When hearing the term “generation Z” lots of different thoughts and stereotypes probably come to mind. People born in the years of 1995 to 2010 just missed the age where technology took over childhood, yet still made it to remember few historical events such as 9/11. Since the technology boom, Gen Z humans have many more resources than ever before. With the whole world ahead of them, they can go on to accomplish many things as long as they get passed the negative stereotypes. Generation Z has been labeled lazy, impatient, and entrepreneurial. Although most of the stereotypes are negative, there is some positive in this generation.
All generations have their own interesting qualities and contributions to the world; which most of the time teaches younger generation’s key skills for living their lives successfully. However, not only do the older generations have assets to teach the young, but the younger generations have things to teach the older generations, too! Generation Z is the generation spanning from 1995-2015. In this time period there have been many different changes that have occurred to shape our thoughts on the future and the present. We have gone through our first big terrorist attack, our first African American President, a recession, and the development of a large amount of technology. From these life-altering events, our generation has five different characteristics that can help the older generations learn and grow; please allow us to return the favor.
If I am not mistaken, most of us, if not all of us taking this class was born before the 1990s and might remember going out to the park, the movie theater, or even go outside to play and socialize with the neighborhood kids. There were kids raised in a family that had money and were lucky to have the latest and greatest
Generation Y are less brand loyal and the speed of the Internet has helped with the flexibility to change in its fashion, style consciousness and where and how it is communicated with. Lastly, Generation Y whichranges from 1995-2012. According to Generational Kinetics there are currently over 23 million Gen Z in the United States. Gen Z members are still largely kids and adolescents but have earlyindications of being increasingly self-aware, self-reliant, innovative and goal-oriented.One key difference from Millennials and Gen Z is that they don’t remember a time before social media. As a result, they tend to live much more of their entire lives from interacting with friends and family to making major purchases online and via their smartphones. Therefore, Gen Z kids will grow up with a highly sophisticated media and computer environment and will be more Internet savvy and expert than their Gen Y
Due to this a person 20 – 30 years ago has a more social skills then someone of that same age today. Living such a life lead meant their days tended to have a more routine lifestyle rather than the spur of the moment decision life style that most people are living today. Generation Z lifestyle consist of a less social time. Instead of being outside with friends or going out to shop many will just do it over the phone, computer or iPad. Decreasing their social skills which in today’s time doesn’t seem very important anymore. Saturday day nights for the baby boomers would be a night out with friends enjoying each other’s company, whereas now it would be a night in with friends with little communication due to everyone being on their phone. The internet has become such a part of an everyday person’s life that people now would much rather stay in then explore the world with the people closest to them. Baby boomers did have as many resources in education as Gen Z does today, unlike teenagers today who use their phone, computer or tablet to look up information for homework, baby boomers had to go to the library to find information. Mainly everything ties
What is America’s Youth without social media? Social media is a big part of the American society. Most definitely the youth part of the society. Social Media comes with many pros and cons. It lets you stay in contact with new friends, lets you reconnect with old friends. It’s also a way of creating a mini biography for everyone in the world to see. Social media can be used responsibly or it can dangerous for some users. When used carelessly social networks can cause great damage to anyone. Some people don’t realize when using social media how much information they put out there for the world to see. Young teens can rarely tell when they put their selves at risk when using social media. Social
While some young people utilize technology to create great content such as music, literature, or coding, it has created a budding effect of a generation that is obsessed with consumption. The truth is the majority of youth’s time has been excessively dedicated to passive activities like watching tv or online videos, gaming and scrolling through social media. According to Common Sense Media, when it’s summed up America’s youth is using an average of 6 hours of media daily, not counting for school or homework. That is a massive chunk stolen from a child’s day and the effects can be extremely damaging. It is leading the young generation of today to become overstimulated, over-scheduled and under pressure to perform both academically and beyond
Out of all generations our generation is the most technologically inclined even compared to the millenials who opened our eyes to cyberspace. While millenials may have had technology in their life times we, Generation Z, are the only generation to grow up expecting technology to be in our grasp, any unanswered questions and our parents simply say, “Ask google.” Some may say this is not the way we should grow up but whether or not people agree with this there is nothing you can do, internet is here to stay and is only going to advance for generations to come. Because of the advances we have found
Social media is something that has not always been around. It is something that is growing, and making a big impact on the younger generation. Social media has changed the way that many Americans live, and now some could not live without it. Even though social media has taken away many burdens in this life, it has brought many self problems along with it. Kids in school in this society no longer take the time to prepare for their tests, they just do whatever it takes to get by. I believe people want to make big money, but don't want to do the work that comes along with it. Many complain of having to do a little work, or complete a difficult task at their workplace or home. Things that seem so simple to us in this day and time where daydreams of people in the past. Most of all, work today is submitted electronically through technology and hardly never on paper. Jobs can be done straight from a cell phone, or laptop without even having to go to work. This has caused the generation today to loose face to face contact, and that is how people are becoming self-centered. Earlier generations did not have all these ways to communicate with people like today’s generation does. The Older Adults and Social Media (2010) states, “To look at the data another way, among the pool of adults ages 50 and older who use social networking sites, 44% used them on the day prior
To begin with, kids this generation have social media to use as a source of information. In the text it states, “ social media has allowed the spread of information at a rate that has never been seen before,”( “is this generation really more informed?”, Paragraph 1). For example, the rise of the black lives matter movement spread throughout due to social media. This topic interest many people, which made them want to know more about. Also, having social media allows people to become more informed if they choose to use it that way.In addition, it states, “... 88 percent of Millennials use
He says that while Gen Z can take in a lot of information very quickly due to this technological upbringing they also lose interest extremely quickly. Also, they tend to be more private with this technology than millennials were, rather than posting everything online they are more likely to use more anonymous apps.
This generation is also referred to as Generation Y, Nexters, Echo boomers, and the “Me” generation as well who are well-educated, multitalented, open minded, confident, outgoing, and influential (Berkup, 2014). The focus on children is the highest with attention-giving parents involving their children in all kinds of multiple activities (Twenge & Campbell, 2012). Technology has had the biggest impact on this generation since they were children labeling them as the “digital natives” (Berkup, 2014; Twenge & Campbell, 2012). This high tech environment has allowing them to communicate globally utilizing e-mails, Facebook and text messaging rather than picking up the phone to talk (Stein, 2013; Twenge & Campbell, 2012). Because of the advancements of technology this generation has the most and is the most educated compared to the other generations. They welcome challenges, yearn to learn new ideas and do not hesitate to change their career to find their own sense if identity or feel fulfilled (Stein, 2013; Twenge & Campbell,
Technology is not all to blame for the stereotypes about Generation Z. Despite the negative comments about Generation Z being lazy and unaware, they are not at all. In fact, because most of them are technologically inclined and virtually updated, they are not apathetic, they’re just being teenagers who were raised in a different environment. This is why there is such a thing as generations in this world. If there weren’t any changes in the world, we wouldn’t even be able to tell if a new generation has come. Every generation has its benefits for a better and more advanced living.
As we have seen recently within Egypt and Libya it’s the Generation Z that are the ones who are most connected and spurring these social changes that Kaplan had predicted uncannily. Even though both these countries had a substantially large standing army the shear size of those involved within the revolt minimized any significant advantage that those in control had. Even though many within our culture have access to technology on a daily basis it is greatly unavailable to the majority of the world especially in those areas that are the most affected by these cultural clashes. As technology becomes more readily available expect social change to stem from online engagement in which people will be able to rally behind anonymity to push social change forward.
Can you imagine living in a world with no social media or smartphone? No instagram, twitter, facebook or snapchat? Believe it or not, that world existed before us millennials did. According to an article found on the Pew Research Center.com, entitled “The Demographics of Social Media Users”, the amount of Facebook users is “72% of adult internet users [and] 62% of entire adult population.” Facebook along with other media outlets have easily become the norm for young adults and older adults in today’s society. The rapid growth of accessibility to social media networking was made possible from the creation and use of smart phones. The combination of social media sites and smart phone users has single handedly eliminated the need for human interactions, but also has provided a repertoire of information at our fingertips. I will discuss the following: the history of Facebook and its impact, the creation of the iPhone and its development of social media apps like Instagram, and the effects of cyberbullying. The purpose of this essay is to explore the productive qualities and destructive qualities that various social media outlets have presented to our generation.
