Is social media any good for democracy? Social media has been on the rise and is big in the world currently. In many ways, it brings this society together, but it also is manipulating and tearing this society further apart. The most influential social media sites are Facebook, Twitter, and Google. There has been a long fluctuation of democracy, but social media poses the newest threat to the 21st century American democracy, based on the immense amount of data online, the amount of influence it has on people, and the number of tools it is providing for political manipulation. The large social media platforms—Facebook, Google, and Twitter—have been under a lot of pressure recently. After the 2016 elections, the founder of Facebook was shocked when he found out that his company had influence on it. Twitter had a handle that had been pretending to be a part of the Tennessee Republican Party. It was later discovered that the handle was controlled by a Russian Troll. This handle had been sending out racist messages. The page had been up for months before the real organization notified Twitter. Executives from these platforms will have to go in front of different Congressional committees and be questioned over their roles in threatening American democracy (Fukuyama). There is an immense amount of data online. This causes for people to find more misinformation. For instance, emails from Russia were sent out to people that looked legitimate, otherwise known as spear phishes,
