Next time you are out in public, notice how many people are immersed in their cellular devices. I bet you will see a lot, and most likely these people are on their social media accounts. According to Brooke Lusk, the database and media manager for the Prevention Researcher, social media can be defined as, “an aspect of the internet which allows individuals and groups to create and publish online content, share the content, and interact about it.” These days, people are very involved with the internet and social media. It has become extremely common for an individual to sign into their Facebook account, and see a picture that they feel exposed a little too much. Check into their Instagram account, and regret letting everyone know what their location was. Feel uncomfortable, or bullied by a tweet that a person posted to their Twitter. Per Farheen’s article on negative effects of social media “participating in social media sites such as these can make you feel more connected” (Sagheer 1). It is not okay for individuals to feel victimized due to the negative effects of social media. Social media tends to distract, humiliate, and destroy one-self through entertainment. If people would donate more time to things more supplemental to their growth, and limit their use of social media, then maybe people would stop walking over the harm that social media presents to our community. Monitoring the time invested into social media will help eliminate most of the detriment, privacy issues, and bullying flowing through today’s society.

    People do not realize the immense impact social media has on their lives.  Social media first impacted people’s lives with the invention of the telephone in 1890.  Following this, the radio entered many homes in 1891; this was the beginning of social media.  During the twentieth century, computers and the Internet began the modern rise of today’s social media. UseNet, in 1979 was a virtual newsletter, which began what people think today of as modern social media.  When home computers became popular during the 1980s, such sites as relay chats took off.  Then, in 1997, the first true social media site , Six Degrees, came about: “It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999, the first blogging sites became popular, creating a social media sensation that’s still popular today” ( “Complete History of Social Media: Than and Now”). Although social media has some positive effects,  social media has changed the world for the worse because it negatively affects politics, privacy, and bullying.

Social media can become an addiction and it can affect community and people differently. For example, I personally use social media as well and it affects me in many different ways. Over the past year, social media has grown to be a miracle in today world. Social media is something that most kids, teens, and adults use every day. Having people on the phone all the time is the disappointment and instead of talking face to face, they choose to text or using social media. Social media shows a huge role in today modern society. Social media influence us in many negative different ways and it is the major problem in my family and community. If people know how to use social media wisely they will make a better society. I personally use social media every day and it distracts me in many different ways but I would like to point out three thing that affects me, which are my health condition, education, and relationship with God. My doctor said, “sleep makes your memories stronger.” I trust what he said to me because when I sleep more I feel fresher than I sleep less. When I feel fresh I finished my homework done easily. In 2014, I did a presentation in our church about how social media effect on our health situation. I had spent too much time on research about it and it gave me so many reasonable statements. One thing that I found was, it leads us to increase neck pain because when we watch the phone while we sleep it hurt our neck and we keep doing it every day so it will outcome in a negative way in one day. “40% more likely to have tried cigarettes, two times more likely to have tried alcohol, 43% more likely to be binge drinkers, and 41%more likely to have used illicit drugs compared to their non-hyper-texting peers. In addition, these students are 55% more likely to have been in a physical fight.” (page-8) People should concern about their health, if they want to live longer they should stop doing drug and a physical fight. Social media associated with risky behavior because people are bullying through social media so it makes them angry easily.

Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are commonly used among the younger generations, but can the excessive use of these apps cause mayhem? According to a new study conducted by the Family Technology Education Non-Profit Group, teenagers are spending nearly 9 hours a day on social media. The excessive use of social media is a bad influence on adolescents because of the negative impacts it has. Social media can cause direct impacts to the mental health, safety, and lives of its users. Teenagers need to ensure that they are being cautious and responsible while using different social media networks.

When thinking about a drug, most people think to substances like heroin and cannabis; however, there is new substance that has been sweeping nations. A drug is a substance that has a phycological effect when introduced to the body. Though people don’t think of social media as a drug, it has the same addictive side effects. Upon reading article “Addicted to Distraction” by Tony Schwartz, which talks about the addiction society has to social media and its effects, I realized what a drug social media is. This generation has experienced technology like never before, and it has led to advantages and disadvantages. Although social media can be fun, there is a developing addiction that has causes, effects, and solutions.

What is the impact of long-term social media use on Americans? Social media has been one of the most influential activities for young Americans and the Americans as a whole. According to the statistic from “Use of Social Media by US Adults According to Age Group, 2016,” 86 percents of adult Americans use the Internet such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Twitter. This statistic shows that most of the people, including all ages, in the United States have access to some kind of social media. The number of people joining social platforms to see what others are doing are astronomical, but with this this rise in social media usage, users are becoming more isolated. Social media distracts individuals from face-to-face interactions with friends, and makes having connections with new people harder to do. So much time out of someone's day is spent in social media. A recent study titled #StatusofMind, surveyed young adults from the ages of 14 to 24 revealead the negative effects that social media has on one’s life. The study uncovered that social media brings upon undermining mental health issues, influences self-identity and degrades body image. Social media has made it easy to make anyone's life superficial, especially that of teenagers who are more susceptible to society's standards and expectations. Social media is infamous for creating phony personalities, bringing down self esteem, and influencing users to alter their identity because society has set standards for the “perfect” person.
