One thing in this article that I agree about Is that social media have bad effect on the students’ study performance. Bonnie Roschmann writes, “The more media they consumed per day, the worst students they were. If students spend more than six or seven hours daily on social media then they wouldn’t have enough time to study because they have other things to do during the day such as eating, sleeping, so they are going to end up falling the class.
An abundance of parents are distressed by the amount of time their teens are using social media, and if they spend suitable time in the real world and studying. A recent study at UNH showed that college students grades have not been affected by the time they spent on social media, even the students more heavily engaged are still acquiring the indistinguishable grades as the lighter users.
Over the decade our generation has become more and more into Social Media. We can post any picture, tweet about our daily lives and comment on everything. However, as you pose for a picture, or tweet about something that happened to you, do you ever think if it interferes with the First Amendment? Most people do not consider that, and sometimes what they posted can lead them into a lot of trouble because it could violate the first amendment. Many argue that first amendment grants us the freedom of speech; however, to what extent should our activity on social media be protected as free speech under the first amendment? The people’s activity on social media should be protected as free speech unless the activity is determined to be an actual threat towards someone because there are different interpretations, our comments reflect our opinions, and the right of free speech is the foundation of our country and forms what this country is about.
The more time the students spend on these social media sites, the less time they will spend socializing in person with others. This reduces their communication skills. They will not be able to communicate and socialize effectively in person with others. The effective communication skills are key to success in the real world.
The major finding of this research was that social networking negatively affects the overall GPA of post-secondary student’s. Research on the Time spent on Facebook and the academic performance shows that Facebook users (students) reported to have a lower GPA due to the fact that they had less time to study, as compared to the non-Facebook users (Kirschner & Karpinski, 2010). In connection from the student’s who participated in this study, 55% of students reported that social networking negatively affected their preparation for class. When analyzing the data it was apparent that 53% of students were performing at average, as they reported to have an overall GPA between 2.34 – 3.33. In addition, it was hypothesized in this study that the more time spent social networking the lower performing a student’s GPA would be. This has been a significant factor in this study. One
While grades have improved for light users, the grades of students who are heavy users of social media tend to suffer. One study shows that student users have an average GPA of 3.06 while non-users have an average of GPA 3.82
When Facebook launched in early 2004, it shocked the world. From elementary school kids to great grandparents, everyone had to have a digital profile. Ultimately, what is at stake here is the educating of students, resulting in lower grades. According to Reynol Junco, “Sophomores and juniors only experienced a negative impact on their GPAs when they used Facebook while

They presented this research on 16th April, in San Diego at the meeting of American Education Research Association. It was discovered that college students who were facebook users, spent lesser time studying than nonusers of facebook and eventually got lower grades. Although more than three-quarters of facebook users claimed that facebook use does not hamper their studies we cannot deny the fact that there is a connection between these two. Facebook users in the study had GPAs between 3.0 and 3.5, while non-users had GPAs between 3.5 and 4.0. Users seemed to allocate one to five hours study time weekly whereas non-users pulled off 11 to 15 hours on a weekly basis. (Grabmeier, n. d).
