Jergenson, a social media enthusiast, shares his ideas about how people live in constant “digital dualism” (129) a term coined by the author himself, which is “the habit of viewing the online and offline as largely distinct,” (129).However, Jergenson argues that being either “online” or “offline” doesn’t really exist anymore, that people are perpetually connected even if it’s indirectly. The once separate “on” and “off” modes people used to have diminished as social media and technology have embedded themselves into our lives, into our “source code,” (126).

The evolution of technology in the 20th century brought many innovations. Among them is the social media. Essentially the 21st century revolves around these social media as individuals, corporations, and government agencies use these avenues to communicate and pass messages to their audience. I am an ardent user of social media too. Through the years that I have used social media, the sites have had a myriad effect on me. As expected these effects cut across both sides; some are positive effects while others are negative effects. However, the power of social media cannot be underestimated. With the ever increasing technological awareness among people, there is a possibility that the world will be connected through the social media.

At the dawn of the millennium, a new social issue began to surface. As the internet rapidly gained international popularity, new branches of it were created. Currently, Social media dominates the internet world. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines social media as, ¨forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)” (www.merriam-webster.com). The sudden rise of social media’s popularity sparked countless debates on how it affects our society. According to statistics, one out of four people in the world today use some type of social media, whether it be instagram, facebook, twitter, or more (Whiteman). Numerous studies were released on how social media is impacting the lives of people worldwide. The overwhelming evidence proves that social media, overall, affects people in a negative way.

Most Think that social media doesn’t have any negative sides. When you think of social media what do you think of. It is a very easy way to connect with others, although there are a certain risk and dangerous crimes that come with it. It also causes isolation which affects people psychologically. Some people have to understand that people still live their life in the past even if there was no social network. According to statistics, there was more interaction between people when the social network did not exist. Social networking has helped people build a strong relationship in so many ways. Business merchants use this means to stay connected with their customers. Family and friends are able to connect with each other easily and everyone stays happy. It also helps to connect past friends from high school and other old friends you have missed.

Facebook and Twitter are the two most popular forms but there are other forms of social media that can produce information. Making key utilisation of social media is at the top of many firms’ plans (Lam et al., 2016). To unlock the beneficial insights of social media many tool and techniques can be used. This literature review will look at sentiment analysis and web mining techniques. The focus will also look at how useful analysing data online can be to businesses.
