Essay on Social Networking: A Modern Day Freak Show

We now live in a world where social media has changed the way we interact with the world around us. At a young age we are programed to worry about how strangers view our lives and our decisions. People are worried about how many likes they get and social acceptance. Though these outlets individuals build their social foundations that will later become the building blocks of their careers. People tend to fall short excepting criticism, communication skills, and analyzing information.

Since it's humble beginning in the mid 16th century, the circus and “freak show” act has been entertaining and horrifying people to this day; however, in today’s ultra-sensitive society, how has the classic “freak show” evolved to be deemed acceptable and be used to promote acceptance and positive views of people with abnormalities, rather than viewing these people as “freaks”, as was the original purpose of the classic “freak show”?

The book, I Know Who You Are and I Know What You Did, by Lori Andrews, states that social network as in Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Instagram, Snapchat, and etc. causes conflict in many aspects of life. In today society, social media seems to reveal more a more negative side of the public. Andrews also states that social media is a distraction to every aspect of life including job careers, education, politics, religion, family, and even death. Invading privacy on social media and violating rights of others can cause disturbing commotion and could lead to prosecution. People should use discretion when posting online, and make sure not to post anything purposely offensive or distasteful and graphic content.

New media has been easily made available everywhere and Facebook in particular as one of the world most popular social networking site (SNS) can be made accessible from desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablet because of this, almost everybody can have access to Facebook anywhere they go. For the most reason, due to the introduction of new media, Facebook plays a key role communication and staying in touch with families, friends, acquaintances, businesses, groups meetings and a whole lot of others. Moreover it has also been useful in growing markets and advertising mediums through big companies, brands and highly respectable top class businesses. New media as a broad topic can be defined as a “form of communication which transmits information through a medium that uses routers and servers via high-speed internet and involves materials been received via desktops, computers, tablets and smartphones”.

It's allows people to express who they are. Not everyone can express themselves, social media allows a person to be themselves in addition, social media allows people to have more privilege to convey who they are. Social media makes it easier to demonstrate who the real are.

Relationships and intimacy are important during adulthood, especially during young adulthood. Happiness at this developmental stage often come from relationships that are formed. Even young adults who are not looking to form long-term or lasting relationships typically still focus on connections with others.

As a matter of fact, this Harvard genius that founded the world’s first social network was not as childish as the movie portrayed. The project aim at teenagers, therefore sample group is between 13 to 19. I will set the sample sizes in 50 participants since it is easy to identity and more precision. If a sample sizes increase, it is very hard to estimate and become not accurate. Also, I’m worry about the extremes data can’t make a balance out, so the project prefers small sample sizes.
