Society created the standards and/or the norms for the bases of gender roles. Within the United States, alone, the masculine role is related with authority, strength, and aggression were as the feminine role is associated with being dependent, nurturing, and submissiveness. (Gender role- Social and behavioral norm that is generally considered appropriate for either a man or a women in a social setting or interpersonal relationship.)

Gender roles are basically “society norms” It tells types of behaviors that are considered acceptable for a person based on their sex. The expectations include of how a person should act, dress, and talk.

The media is currently largely responsible in creating and reminding people of the existence of gender roles and social norms, which consequently influences children. Aside from media, parents are the most responsible in the upbringing of their child. That being said, parents can choose to control what they teach their child and steer them away from the societal norms of certain gender roles, but they don’t have control over the media’s content. Sometimes, parents can’t help if they give their daughter a Barbie doll and their son a Batman action figure, because they don’t realize it and they themselves were raised to understand that girls are supposed to like this and do that and boys are supposed to like that and do this. Gender roles are defined as "socially and culturally defined prescriptions and beliefs about the behavior and emotions of men and women" (Anselmi & Law, 1998). Gender roles are not biological. They are learned through social interaction (Baur & Crooks, 2014). They are the behaviors that society deems appropriate and acceptable for men and women in a society; and from a young age, people are taught by everything and everyone around them how they are supposed and expected to act (Baur & Crooks, 2014).

I trudged into this class the first day unaware that I was going to be hit in the face with the reality of social gender norms and how awful they are. It’s as if we’re put in a trance growing up that puts us in specific lanes that we need to stay in called gender norms one lane is titled “female” and the other is “male.” I was asked “What is a woman?” and the first few things that popped into my head were well long hair, breasts, makeup, and a vagina. None of these things are what should define a woman although a vagina is something a female is born with at birth. Something that struck me reading this article was the claim that gender is determined by societal norms. What gives society the right to deem the color pink a girly color and black a boy color. What gives society the right to determine playing with dolls is for girls and playing with cars is for guys? Why do we have to put labels on things? This is part of the reason there are so many people who are confused with their identity in the world. A guy may have some habits that are considered “girly”. All of a sudden he thinks he needs a sex change because society is telling him he acts like a girl. Throughout the course of history, going from the Puritans to modern day civilization each gender has had a set of societal norms dictating the types of behaviors which are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, or desirable for people based on their actual perceived sex of sexuality. Gender roles are usually centered on conceptions of femininity and masculinity there are some exceptions and variations.

By definition, gender roles are specific functions and expectations that have been set by society based on gender. These predispositions influence the actions and reactions of an individual. One’s gender significantly affects day to day decision making and long-term aspirations.

Gender roles are the standards set by a society for each of the genders. Most people will not have a problem with the gender roles established but they can be very harmful to some people. Basic gender roles consist of women being associated with the color pink and men being associated with blue. The terms gender and sex are often used interchangeably. Gender refers to the socially constructed roles based on an individuals sex (Beemyn, 2015). Whereas, sex concerns biological characteristics such as chromosomes, hormones, and genitalia (Beemyn, 2015).

Today we live in a world that continually stresses to us that, "All men are created equal." While this sounds great at face value, further inspection tells us that this is far from realistic and sadly may never be. One can examine any aspect of society whether it be race, religion, language, level of education, sexual orientation or economic status and notice that there are numerous characteristics and factors of identity that enable others to treat others differently. This truth may not be pleasant or make one feel all warm and fuzzy inside, however it is our society’s reality, however dismal it may be.
