As digital technology continues to grow and the internet becomes one of the most highly used sources, the connection people can create with one another from all parts of the world has flourished. One of the most popular websites visited in the United States is Youtube.com and has contributed tremendously to the emergent interactions amongst people. This website has steered to the establishment of so many social phenomena—one being Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, or more commonly known as ASMR. The social phenomenon ASMR can be explained as a relaxing sensation that is felt on the scalp and is triggered by various gentle sounds (Garro 396). The first ASMR video posted on YouTube was back in 2009 by the account WhisperLife titled …show more content…
The data was collected over the course of four weeks. Also, before the experiment was conducted, each participant was asked a range of “strongly agree” to “strongly disagree” questions on why they chose to watch ASMR. In addition to these questionnaires, other sets of questions were asked to correctly measure the effects of mood and/or pain in which they were asked to rate it numerically from one to one hundred before and after watching (Barratt and Davis 4-5). The results of the questionnaire’s support that ASMR can be used for sleep, relaxation, and stress, “82% agreed that they used ASMR to help them sleep, and 70% used ASMR to deal with stress” (Barratt and Davis 5). Furthermore, the results for designating mood alterations after watching ASMR were noteworthy as it did display improvements for the contributors of the study, “[e]ighty percent of participants responded positively when asked if ASMR has an effect on their mood, while 14% were unsure and 6% felt that ASMR did not alter their mood” (Barratt and Davis 7). This data alone can be used to build upon further research to view mood improvements of ASMR in comparison to prescribed medications. Additionally, the study found that “[f]ifty percent of participants said their mood improved even in sessions when no tingling sensation was produced, while 30% said that achieving this sensation was vital to mood improvement” which also
In fact, many people who practice the Technique experience a general feeling of lightness throughout their bodies and even describe the sensation as being like ‘walking on air’. Since our physical state directly affects both out mental and emotional well-being, people often say that they feel much calmer and happier even after just a few Alexander lessons. This often results in less domestic tension and a greater ability to cope with life in general.
The North Hanover Mall is an average shopping center with various stores and small attractions. Typically, the mall is not over-crowded; however, during the evenings and weekends it is well-traveled. There are the average chain stores such as JCPenny’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Hallmark, and Bath and Body Works. Likewise, there are some smaller, lesser known stores, for example, a few nail and hair salons, cafes, a pizza shop, and a sports apparel store. In general, there is a diverse mix of people shopping, from ethnicity to ages and group sizes. The night I choose to do my social observation the mall was much busier than I had anticipated. There was a Halloween event and an antique car show; both circumstances brought more individuals than usual into the shopping complex.
In social psychology, social influence is a process where someone’s beliefs, thoughts and behaviour change by being exposed to beliefs, thoughts and opinions of others. It manifests in several forms, such as obedience, compliance and conformity. All these types of social influence have been studied by numerous researchers who investigated the reasons why people conform to social norms and obey to authorities, such as Milgram’s classic studies on obedience. His experiments support the popular idea of ‘banality of evil’ –Hannah Arendt (1963)’s famous phrase referring to the capability to accomplish dreadful things out of banal reasons–, revealing that people conform submissively and thoughtlessly to the orders that authorities deliver, no

A study was done on the effectiveness of a collaborative approach with pain on the veterans through the use of complementary and alternative medicines. They were interested in whether the veterans with chronic pain were using complementary and alternative medicine treatments as demonstrated in the general population. The researchers wanted to find out which complementary and alternative medicines was most appealing to the veterans. The article written by Fletcher, et., al (2016), the hypothesis was implied on how complementary and integrative health therapies used massages as an effective way to manage noncancerous pain. A study was done to examine the experience, knowledge, and opinions of veterans receiving massage therapy and complementary and integrative health. Massages is the dependent variable, in which can help provide a form of distraction or relaxation for the veteran.
Due to the extensive procedures surrounding treatment, patients often experience a variety of physical and psychological symptoms and side effects that negatively impact their quality of life and ability to cope with and manage an illness. Providing a choice of music during a receptive music therapy session may not only distract the patient from negative affective states, but also may provide a sense of autonomy and control over a patient 's immediate environment. The purpose of the essay was to determine whether receptive music therapy can improve two general dimensions of emotional experience and pain in a single session for patients. The guiding research question was: Will participants experience improved positive affect following a music therapy session? In my opinion ,I think the answer is yes. music therapy definitely have a positive effect on patients.
The following analysis will observe various methods of CAM pain reduction, highlighting two major CAM therapies of interest: music therapy, animal therapy. In addition, the following analysis will discuss how different demographics react to such therapies, with gender, age, ethnicity, and education level playing a role in relation to a patient’s willingness to be open to CAM. Lastly this analysis will discuss the drawbacks of CAM therapies in the medical community today, emphasising a lack of discussion between provider and patient, and the general lack of clinical education surrounding CAM therapies within the medical community.
According to the financial definition, a recession is a significant decline in activity spread across the economy, lasting longer than a few months. It is visible in industrial production, employment, real income, and wholesale-retail trade. The technical indicator of a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth as measured by a country's GDP. (Dictionary.com) A less official and more realistic definition of an economic recession is the social perception of the state of the economy at a given time. The collective beliefs of the public, mainly businesses and consumers, drive the social perception of whether things are seen as positive or negative. Unfortunately
The occurrences of modern Black social phenomena 's reflect Black people 's history in America; they are byproducts of a social system that has neglected their equality, liberty, justice, and needs. Most Black social phenomena are ironically misunderstood by the very system that help creates them. Along with being misunderstood, Black social phenomena 's are also blamed for many of society 's ills. The present welfare system was not created by black people but they receive the blame for its inefficiency. A vicious cycle has been created. Black social phenomena 's occur with little control by black people, but the negative effects and consequences are blamed on Black people.
Opinions And Social Pressure by Solomon E. Asch is the writer that wrote about peer pressure. “… we have found the tendency to conformity in our society so strong that reasonably intelligent and well-meaning young people are willing to call white black matter of concern ” In other words we the youngster find the matters that we find interesting because others find the black and white situation interesting. Most of us just want to follow other people because we don’t want to be considered weird. Many of want to be accepted by others to not feel lonely. We don’t care if its disobeying, we just want to accepted. In a experiment named Opinions and Social Pressure. This experiment is about people following others because they feel like they wrong.
The article “Opinions and Social Pressure” by Solomon E Asch is about how people conform to social norms and how social learning is a large part of everyday life. Asch begins by explaining how social norms and pressures allow people to learn how to function within society from learning a language to understanding cultural aspects. The majority of the article describes series of experiments in which subjects are asked to match lines of the same size. The experiments presented throughout the article describe different settings and independent variables. The majority of the experiments conclude that people conform to the majority's opinion to different degrees regardless of whether it is correct or not.
The article about the humorous videos was good. It makes sense, because whenever i get mad or frustrated with my school work or a difficult task it helps me to see something funny or something to “cheer me up”. The people who were tested where in the workplace so I personally can't relate but it makes plenty of sense. Because who doesn't like cat videos? But what i can relate to is the idea as a whole. For example, while I write this response i am listening to music. The music gives me something to take some of the focus off of a difficult task so my brain just feels like its natural. Because without music I would be distracted by all the outside noises and my brain would feel overloaded. But with a break to watch a couple funny videos or a
ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response and it refers to a phenomenon which is very difficult to explain to those that do not experience it. It is usually experienced through a relaxing tingling in the scalp and the back of the neck and can extend into the rest of the body. It is a very calming sensation that washes over you. There has not been very many studies on ASMR, but people from everywhere are feeling it- just look at the comment section of a slime video. In a video of a ‘slimer’ poking their fingers into a small plastic container of a dark blue slime with foam on top, you can find comments such as “so satisfying!! ASMR trigger!” (instagram user, @k_a_thieme) and “I love this so much, that ASMR really kicked in while I was watching this” (instagrammer @tk.slime) were found on one video off an account that goes by the name @slimeycandy. ASMR could just be a way of activating the pleasure response. Vertebrate brains are fundamentally hardwired for pleasure and pain – for positive and negative behavioral feedback. We are rewarded with a pleasurable sensation for doing things and experiencing things that increase our survival probability, and have a negative or painful experience to make us avoid harmful behavior or warn us about potential danger or injury. Over evolutionary time a complex set of reward and aversion feedbacks have developed. The fact that all of our human brains are not clones or copy cats, but vary in every possible way they can vary. ASMR is usually precipitated by stimuli referred to as 'triggers'. ASMR triggers, which are most commonly acoustic and visual, may be encountered through the interpersonal interactions of daily life. Additionally, ASMR is often triggered by exposure to specific audio and video. Such media may be especially made with the specific purpose of triggering ASMR, or originally created for other purposes and later discovered to be

“Robert” is 5 years old and this observation took place at a family party, in a great social setting. I received clearance to observe Robert by both his mother and father. Robert is an only child and spends his time equally between his maternal and paternal families due to the fact that his parents are separated. He is a third generation Mexican-American. He seems to be growing fairly well in reference to his height and weight compared to other children his age. Throughout much of the afternoon, I observed calm behavior and much later, I observed a more boisterous behavior. At the beginning of the observation he walked into the social setting being almost oblivious to the people around him, not wanting to formally greet members of the family until his father asked him to do so. After this, Robert sat at a table alone until children approached him and then he became a little less shy in demeanor.
