I am applying to the doctoral social psychology program of The University of Texas because the university has a prestigious reputation of scientific research, and I believe the social psychology program will develop my applied research skills and promote creative-thinking skills that will equip me to better serve society through my desired career path. I wish to obtain my doctorate in social psychology so that I may practice doctoral-level research and apply this research to workplace behavior. After obtaining my doctorate, my desire is to become a licensed industrial and organizational practitioner. Through the application of my education and career goals, I hope to impact society by not merely creating a more tolerable work environment, but by nourishing strengths within a work environment that improves well-being, performance, and allows individuals to flourish in a vital domain of one's life. …show more content…
My research interests can be defined by a broad interest in factors that promote skill retention and resilience and the relationship between perceptions of fairness and workplace behavior. More specifically, I am interested in how factors of motivation and self-regulation can be enhanced to promote skill retention and increase resilience, and how perceptions of fairness impact social responsibility and ethical decision-making. My passion to cultivate skills that improve individual well-being and contribute to the overall well-being of a social system is motivated by the hope that, those I interact with, may gain a sense of satisfaction and experience increased self-efficacy that is transferable to other life

Personal Statement For as far back as I can remember I have always had a positive outlook on life. As a child, I was not fully aware of the troubles and hardships people faced. I always assumed that the people around me were, for the most part, content with their lives. It was not until my freshman year of high school when one of my closest friends disclosed to me that she did not want to live anymore, that this image I had of the world was challenged.

Having pursued employment opportunities that allowed me to make a positive difference on the lives of the less fortunate, the Counselling Psychology course at University of East London is an obvious field that will allow me to continue these desires. Ultimately, this course allows me to change the lives of people and obtain my goals. The course prepares me for employment as a professional clinician, and grants me the ability to continue the promotion of well-being.
I have always been thrilled by what goes around in people’s minds, but it was at the age of fifteen that I was first attracted to the field of psychology and particularly to clinical psychology. It was mainly because I read my favorite book When Nietzsche Wept by Irvin Yalom. This novel had a personal impact on me, as someone I know was dealing with depression, migraines, insecurities and suicidal tendencies same as happens so in the book’s characters.
“It takes a village to raise a child.” I never quite understood that saying when I was growing up, but my experiences teaching and working in school settings have showed me how true it really is. Obtaining a degree in school psychology will allow me to give the support that students, families and educators need to ensure that every student will thrive.
Personal Statement I am interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at Florida State University where I can develop my research in understanding substance use disorders (SUDs). According to Grant et al. (2016) , SUDs are common, highly comorbid, and disabling disorders that often go untreated in the United States. Although in the last several decades there has been an abundance of research conducted and significant progress has been made, there are still significant limitations in our knowledge in understanding and treating SUDs (Sutker & Adams, 2001).
The principles and theories of Social Psychology are important and useful in assessing behaviors in situations. These social psychological principles and their applications can be seen in fictional films which can also be attributed to everyday life. One such film that holds certain social psychological perspectives is Will Gluck’s 2010 production of Easy A. A film about high school student Olive Penderghast and how a sudden change in popularity and financial status, after an unintentional rumor about how she supposedly lost her virginity to a college guy spread through the entire her school. The film draws on the behavioral connections of pronounced hussy Olive Penderghast and her English class’s assigned reading of The Scarlet Letter.
The Social Observation Generalization (SOG) that I believe whose effect has been to limit me in some way is “I am too smart to allow my environment to dictate my life choices”. I chose this SOG because growing up in South Los Angeles I’ve had to deal with the stereotypes that we are all Cholos and Cholas, that we smoke, steal, gang-bang or that we are all just plain ignorant individuals that are hardly seemed destined for success, but not everyone here fits these stereotypes. I am nothing like that. Although I am proud to be raised in this tough neighborhood, I knew that life had more to offer than going to jail or dying, therefore, I told myself that I did not want to become a product of my environment or allow it to dictate my life choices.
When I declared a psychology major during the second year of my undergraduate career, my objective was to attend medical school and eventually become a psychiatrist. I enjoyed the psychology classes in which I was enrolled and found them to compliment the premed curriculum I also wanted to study. I reasoned that a major in psychology would provide insight that could later be useful in my planned studies of psychiatry. Although I decided against going to medical school, psychology remained the primary area of focus of my studies with the ultimate career goal of becoming a clinical psychologist. While my long term professional plans include achieving a PhD and becoming a clinical psychologist. Pursuing a masters degree in
What judgments do we make about others? Everyday we make judgments in our social interactions about why others act the way they do, which is known as
Social psychology is a scientific-based study which is used to examine and explain how an individual’s thoughts and feelings affect their behaviour within a society; how the members socially interact, including their motives; and what influences these members have on each other. This essay will endeavour to introduce the key psychologists, their theories and the idiographic research they conducted. In particular, it will focus on the features and definition of conformity and the investigations into the views on conformity. Furthermore, it aims to critically analyse and reveal a correlation in the results and conclusions in respect to the current comprehension of human social behaviour.
Leigh Anne Touhy is the fictional representation of the real life Leigh Anne, famed adoptive mother of Michael Oher from the 2009 film The Blind Side. The family is considered to be part of the upper class, and made their money from owning a string of fast food chains. Leigh Anne and her family take in a black homeless boy, Michael, and throughout the film experience a growing love and bond. They eventually adopt Michael and the Leigh Anne becomes a fiercely protective mother. Very little is revealed about her upbringing
I am pursuing admission into the Educational Specialist (Ed. S.) School Psychology Program at San Diego State University because its ecosystemic and culture-based philosophy reflects my desire to become a culture-oriented school psychologist for children with diverse needs. As I will highlight below, my resolute interest in school psychology and my experiences in psychology and education validate my candidacy for SDSU’s School Psychology Program. I have become increasingly aware of my interest in school psychology over the latter-half of my undergraduate career. My interest originated from my decision to acquire a more expansive knowledge of psychology by double-minoring in Applied Psychology and Educational Studies, as well as partaking in research projects and other educational endeavors.
As a young girl, when I envisioned my future, I knew that it was my purpose and mission in life, to assist those in need. Though I was uncertain about what career I wanted to pursue, I later embarked upon the field of psychology, where my vision became clear. Psychology is a field that opens many different doors. Within the field there are a number of occupations and subdivisions. As we are all aware, individuals with a psychology background can work in private facilities, schools, hospitals, prisons and other institutions.
