Social Work Definition

To help clients and fight for equality, social workers must push for social justice by modifying social institutions to meet the needs of members of society (Rogers, 2016). Social change is a way to push for change to improve people’s situation (Rogers, 2016). According to NASW (1999), social workers are expected to fight for equality and social justice for all people. Social change allows social workers to look at client problems in a way that will help them make large scale change to benefit members of society.

Social workers are professionals who seek help for individuals and families. Workers team together to enhance society for a better world. In a journal, “There is no greater joy nor greater reward than to make a fundamental difference in someone's life” (McGeady). Showing kindness is like lifting the world off society shoulder. In the past, the government provided workers with a higher income, but suddenly there has been sudden decline. Too many woman were involved in the profession, quote Maxwell, “This woman's work, this woman's world” (Maxwell). Women were more involved in gender-based occupation fields, and making the men more powerful which made them to earn more wages.

This is because Social Workers are able to recognize a social problem and can help set up the appropriate plan(s) to target the problem. They are able to advocate for new policies to help target these problems, as well.

Social Work is a career defined as “work carried out by trained personal with the aim of alleviating the conditions of those in need of help or welfare”. Social work varies in several fields, social workers work as part of multi-disciplinary teams with child welfare organizations, adoption and foster care agencies, hospitals, schools, prisons, mental health institutions, and more. Social work may leave the impression that it’s an easy field because it is assumed that all social workers do is serve others and manage paperwork but that is only a small chunk of the job. Social workers must deal with the ethical and emotional aspect of helping others. As a social worker, it is critical to comply with the National Association of Social Workers

To many, a social worker is someone who gets paid nothing with a lot of work to do. To others, a social worker is someone who takes kids away from low-income families, and in some cases, that is what ends up happening. For the most part, a social worker is someone who's end result is to help. Help people who do not have a voice, power, will knowledge or skills needed to overcome the situation that they find themselves in. The social worker does not make millions of dollars but do it for the personal and communally growth.

Many reasons exist for why an individual decides to become a social worker. Sometimes those reasons include hopes of creating a better future for vulnerable members of society, advocating for a world free of oppression and prejudice or even creating macro level changes in policy and legislation. In any case, a social worker is guided by his or her passion, commitment and dedication towards an easing of suffering at the micro, mezzo and macro levels for individuals, groups and communities.

In the conclusion the role of a social worker is very mixed and complex. Social workers face a lot issues while working with people and their families. They work with people of all ages. Promoting social justice is a very important benefits. Everyone had personal benefits that they have developed as they have grown older but it’s very important that social workers continue to do the professional benefits that they have agreed to do at all times and that their personal benefits do not interrupt with these.

They treat each person in a caring and respectful way that is mindful of individual differences, cultural norms and ethnic diversity. They promote clients’ socially responsible self-determination based on their individual values. Social workers seek to enhance their clients’ capability to change, address their own needs and become self-reliant. Social workers are always aware that they are simultaneously responsible to their clients, the law and their organization. They resolve conflicts between clients and society in ways that are respectful and socially

Social Work to me is a very rewarding job and career to go into without actually getting a reward, but being okay with that because it’s all about giving in Social Work. I get great feeling of warmth when I get the opportunity to help someone in need, so I’ve always believed that this was my calling. Social work is the only major I can even see myself going into, every job I’d like to do leads to it. It not only takes an open hearted, kind person but it also takes someone who knows that perfection is not the key. The key is being open minded because the world is so diverse. I’ve learned everyone handles crisis situations and life events in different ways, never assume everyone handles it the same way you do. There is a lot of things that take effect into how people handle situations including: Culture, Race, and Family. So being in Social Work you should always stay open minded, alert, and almost ready for anything. One thing for sure about Social Work is you should never go into it for the money, because you will wind up disappointed. Soon to be Social Workers are reminded by outsiders every day that it’s not a good income job, and it’s heartbreaking, or they assume you just can’t handle it. I believe it takes a special person to want to be a Social Worker, but I also believe it takes a lot of work. With all the assignments we have throughout the semester we will become more knowledgeable with Social Work. The volunteer placement I believe will give us a real life experience of what we will be dealing with, and the online Social Work scavenger hunt will help us become more aware of all the outside resources we have all around us. I believe the self-reflection exercises will really help us keep the information in mind

This can be challenging social workers to understand, accept, and actively engage in. Often social workers entire the field to help, they see oppression and wish to change the world. The enter schooling, devote large amount of finances to receive official documentation on their professional skills to be able to assist those who need assistance. A degree offers them some level of power prestige, and privilege, thus the notion of power with, and sharing power is challenging. Many social workers approach clients with goals of changing them, which in itself can be oppressive. This can lead to relationship where they hold “power over” clients. Social workers have moral and beliefs of equality, independence, self-determination. We want to empower clients and advocate for individual and systemic change towards oppression. However many of us in our approach end up falling into the trap of knowing what is best for the client. This is where we fall short of sharing the power with our clients towards all the goals stated about. Social work to me are individuals who seek to help those in need. People who cannot stand up for themselves, or people who simply don’t want to help themselves but need too. I know that there is a stereotype that social workers are people who simply have no heart and enjoy taking families away, but in my opinion, I believe they are to help people live a better life even if they may not see it at the time. Some people in my family have worked in this field but ended up getting a different job due to the fact that they were overwhelmed with the circumstances they dealt with. Their heart was in the right place but it broke their hearts thinking they were being painted out as a monster. My family did bring out the positives of social work though,

Social workers assist individuals, groups or communities restore or enhance social functioning through creating living conditions favorable to their goal or need. Social workers are trained professionals that help people overcome some of life’s most difficult challenges such as poverty, discrimination, abuse, addiction, physical illness, educational issues, mental illness, disability, unemployment, etc. They accomplish this through counseling individuals, families and communities; teaching them how to cope with the stresses of everyday life. From a political standpoint, social workers spend time and money on campaigns that elect public officials that are committed to social work values. Often times, we as human beings complain and talk about what needs to be done but do not do anything beyond that. Social workers are hands on. They are not just talking about what “should” be done but they are doing something to better our communities.
