I wanted to enter the social work field to help others and to make an impact on people’s lives who may be struggling because of who I am. I am a person that has cerebral palsy and because of this I feel like I have greater life experience because of everything that I have endured growing up. If I can share my story of all the obstacles that I have overcome given the difficult disability that I have I hope it will inspire others to know that nothing is truly impossible. This life experience has allowed me to be able to help people better because it has made me more open minded, sensitive, strong, relatable, and understanding. These life experiences are what made me want to decide to go into the social work field because I want to help people just like I was helped and even more so. Three strengths that I feel I have is experience, being able to understand people, endless patience and being open minded. I say experience is my strength based on what I explained beforehand that no matter the obstacles that one faces and the challenges that life throws at you one must always get back up and fight for what you want. An example is that when I was 18 years old I had major back surgery because my spine was curved which caused me to lean over to the right all the time I …show more content…
For example, a lot of these workers tend to judge me before they even know what all I am capable of and then turn me away before I even have a chance to prove myself. The last characteristic that may create challenges for me is not being to speak another language because of my speech impairment due to my cerebral palsy. Per the social workers curriculum I am supposed to have learned another language like Spanish but because of the trouble that I already have with speaking English learning a completely foreign language would be
A third strength I have is an inner drive to be able to stick to a task and get it done. Whether it is at work or at school, if I am assigned a task I make it a point to work at it until the task is done. If a deadline is presented in front of me I have something inside of me that forces me to keep working on it until it is completed and not just completed but done first the right way. Which leads to another strength that I have is a strong work ethic. In my profession in recruiting what I do reflects me and the company that I work for. When I go to recruiting events or career fairs I represent the company that I am there for. Everything about me such as my demeanor, my dress, my attitude, etc. reflects the professionalism of the company as well as any reports or products that are produced and put out by me. I take pride in my work and
In addition to my personal challenges my personal strengths interfer. A personal strength I have is talking , I love sharing my opinion. Another personal strength I have is giving good advice because I love helping people solve their problem or help make their lives easier. Lastly another personal strength I have is just listening because I am a good person to vent to because I don’t judge. Therefore I always spread positivity and lean a hand.
I chose social working as my career because many other people go through tough situations and have a difficult time talking to relatives or friends to help them through a tough situation. I thought of becoming a social worker so I can have the ability to change the lives of others. Social work is one of those careers you can truly make a difference in people’s lives. I want to become a social worker because life isn’t about just helping yourself it’s about helping others as well, which is what social workers do for a living. Child and family social workers protect children and families in need of assistance. Many families and children don’t feel comfortable talking to just anyone about obstacles they have faced in their lives which is why
As I prepare for the second year of the master’s program, there are three interviews that I must attend to get into my second year placement. Interviews itself can be challenging because they tend to be unpredictable and nerve-racking. The interview can take place with one interviewer or a panel of interviews. To better prepare for this challenge Professor Sears provided the class with a handout of questions to prepare for the placement interview. The three questions I am struggling with are the following:
Working as a mental health and substance abuse use social you do many things in your job.You evaluate and treat mental, emotional or substance abuse problems including alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.Activities include group therapy and case management and support. When I first started into the Social work field was because of my son, Evan, who has a medical diagnose of Autistic Spectrum Disorder. In the past 11 year of his life, I have worked with many professional from teachers to councilors but it was not until my family and I moved to Colorado, that we meet a School social worker that was very helpful in navigating the school system with a child with special needs. I started the social work program at Pikes Peak Community Collage because I wanted to work in the school systems and help children and their parents navigate the public school system insuring that the child is receiving all support and services guaranteed by the Americans with Disability Act. I did not want another family to not have access to life changing resources just because they were never informed of them.
My field placement is at the Red Cross House. Red Cross House is located at 4000 Powelton Avenue in West Philadelphia, Pa 19144. Red Cross House serves as a combined lodging and services delivery center designed to provide a full continuum of services for special needs of victims of the disaster. In addition, Red Cross House is intended to provide shelter to individuals or families temporally or permanently displaced as a result of a disaster. Also, Red Cross House may provide shelter to disaster victims in anticipation of a catastrophe, during an evacuation, or after a disaster occurs. Again, Red Cross House is supposed to be a safe haven from impending disaster and/or short-term emergency housing (1-3 days) and /or transitional housing (on average 21 days) until victims can return to their
When I am an advanced level practice social worker, my goal is to be committed to social justice and empower my clients. In order to achieve this goal, I have decided to pursue my masters degree at the Walden University School of Social Work. This graduate program will prepare be to be an even more competent and effective change agent in the advanced level of practice. When working with veterans and/or members in the military, it is important to embrace a strengths perspective in practice. This graduate program will teach me how to contribute to the empowerment of veterans and/or military members while embracing a strengths perspective in a clinical practice setting. This program will increase my cultural competence as a clinical social worker. Which will in turn, help me understand and respect the cultural diversity of veterans and/or members of the military at all levels of government.
The benefit of me being in the Social Work field is my personal experience with similar struggles. I would like to be the person I never had while going through my hardships. The resurrection of my old wounds that I have overcome would certainly be my weakness. With that being said, I am confident I could make a difference because, I have been in their shoes to a certain extent, so I can help relate to and speak from experience with those I am trying to help. There are many resources available for the people such as shelters, food banks, job training, and placement assistance. All they need is the guidance from a knowledgeable social worker who is willing to offer a helping hand to open these doors of opportunity. Working with the Boys and
Personal Statement Since the age of fourteen, I was convinced that I wanted to be a nurse, traveling the world, helping individuals who were not receiving adequate health care. It was not until years later and when I began considering changing my career. I was in the process of transferring from my local community college to a university and I really began reflected on whether or not if my heart was in Nursing.
As social workers we are required to know the Council on Social Work Education’s core competencies and practice behaviors. We are advised to not discriminate against religion, races, sexual orientation and gender. Before the course diversity I never had to think about my own race for example white privilege. Within this class I put aside every bias I had so that could grasp the concepts without my negative input. Throughout this course my knowledge about the different minorities has transformed how I perceive race and ethnicity.

I found this article to be clearly expressive in the explanation of theories, being applicable to social work by bringing greater understanding of the history of social work theories and their evolutionary process. The author is a worthy story teller and held my attention through his explanation of how different theories arose. Anytime there is interest peaked in a subject there is room for growth within a social worker’s wheelhouse, which is always positive. I like how the author goes into great depth to introduce and explain the idea of the safe place or the “holding environment” as the place where change takes place.
In today`s society, social work as a profession has changed enormously over time. Many interviews, samples and surveys from individuals have been taken over the years about the perception of social workers. Earlier samples of surveys and interviews have shown that social work was not always a popular profession, but now social workers are popular publicly. The public as in people now has a better understanding of social work. Studies showed that numerous of people do not quite have a full understanding of the role of social work. Many people mistake social work as someone who just take someone kids away, and break up happy families. Listen to people problems, and deal with people with lower income or government assistances.
Social work is my second decision. I had been going to Henry Ford Community College for four years and was not sure what University I wanted to attend. I always knew the profession, I chose would primarily be focused on helping others. I thought about going to culinary arts school. However, I kept hearing the Lord lead me to social work, I was sure that helping young people has always been my calling. Social specialists don 't just enable individuals to utilize their assets and insight to individuals utilizing different intercessions, and medications, yet social workers likewise work for social equity, which is one reason of numerous that the record of the issues individuals experience. I believe that being a social worker would mean I can
