I am Veronica Ruiz a first-generation student at Wenatchee Valley College. I will be transferring to Eastern Washington University this fall to pursue my bachelor’s degree in social work. I became interested in social work since I was young. I was born in Morelia, Michoacán and my parents made the sacrifice of migrating to the United States when I was very young. Upon our arrival, we found many support around the community, but in specific I received great help from the school’s social worker. I clearly recall her active presence in our family. She was always someone I could count on for any support or necessity. When we first arrived, the social worker gave my family and I clothing from donations she received. She helped my parents establish …show more content…
The social worker became my role model and I remember telling myself that when I grew up I wanted to be just like her. I want to reciprocate the support she provided us and be able to assist other families in need. I want to represent and assist families in crisis and be an active voice for those in need. Throughout my high school career, I did various internships and volunteer work that helped me conclude I loved working with families and children especially representing minority groups and at-risk youth. I dedicated my time to volunteering in after school programs and I helped at local food banks. I want to help families suppress their struggles by offering comfort and support in moments of financial crisis. At my local church, I helped organize an event to stop world hunger. Members from my community and I collected nonperishable food items and donated them to local food banks or resource groups, so that they could distribute the food to families in …show more content…
Therefore, I plan to start looking at possible practicum centers beforehand, so by the time I am on my second year I already have some options available. I also plan to become familiar with the community by finding resources, as I believe I must educate myself first to be able to guide and help others to the best of my ability. I want to volunteer in facilities that specialize in advocating for minority groups, families and children. If I am unable to find a practicum near the university I plan to commute back and forth between my hometown Chelan and
I began my social work studies over twenty-five years ago at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. I never questioned my decision to pursue a career in social work; I loved my classes and worked hard to learn as much as possible. But the information I gained in undergraduate school simply opened the doors of my education. Most of my learning has come through constant questioning, personal research, and especially through work and life experience. Through these experiences I have encountered the challenges faced by individuals, families, and society and have been able to further access and develop the innate personality traits and abilities that originally led me to study social work as well as learn and practice the many skills necessary to be a successful mental health counselor.
My main reason for applying to the Simmons School of Social Work is that it is an accredited university with an excellent reputation as an educational institution and offers an MSW program that is predominantly online. I attended Thomas Edison State University online and earned my bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.9. Once I made the decision to continue my education, I searched for MSW programs that were available online with CSWE accreditation in compliance with New Jersey State social work licensure. I found that Simmons’s specialized program in clinical social work is well suited for my educational needs.
The decision to take the clinical route as a second year MSW graduate student, was one that took no hesitation to make. My passion for children and the preservation of families have been a propelling factor in my Social Work career; both academically and professionally. These two entities have motivated me to remain steadfast on the journey to obtaining my MSW so I can continue to be a vessel for children and families who are in need of support and empowerment. The clinical spectrum of social work practice has strengthened my ability to work proficiently with multiple clients and perform well when assisting families in different realms of social work practice. The knowledge gained during my four years as an undergraduate BSW student and
When I first heard of human services, I was first confused with being human resources. Back then about two years ago, I made the decision to go with social work from my original psychology prerequisites. Calling the CSU, Dominguez Hills office, I was actually confused of the word human services when I actually called for information on social work. After some research with human services, I've decided to major in the field and to attend at CSU, Dominguez Hills. How I got into human services/social work, it was a long personal journey I had to take that lead me to this field.
I am interested in the MSW program at Walden University because of the objectives of the program to make sure that their students learn what it is that they are suppose too. I am also interested in the Master of Social Work program here at Walden because of the teachers working in the field and having firsthand knowledge about the field. The Master of Social Work program at Walden also have the concentration that I am interested in which is Children and Family Services. My plans for after I receive my degree is to become a license social worker. I also plan to start working at either the department of family and children services or at a local adoption agency.
For this assignment, I decided to interview my aunt because she has been a social worker for about thirty years, and has a lot of experience. She attended Dominican college in Orangeburg, New York where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She then went to graduate school at Montclair State in New Jersey where she received her master’s in psychology. After this, she decided to go back to school for her MSW, which she received from SUNY Albany. Since she graduated, the only profession she has worked in is social work, and she is now a licensed clinical social worker. She loves what she does and is glad that she made the decision to become a social worker.
I cannot emphasize enough the passion I have for child welfare services, I like helping individuals, children to be exact. I cannot see myself doing anything else with my life I never wanted to do anything else in life. I have demonstrated a great deal of capacity for success in the Indiana child welfare scholars program by a number of things: one, staying commented to one major; two presenting myself as a practicing child welfare worker; three, pushing myself to always do better in my classes. Once I knew I wanted to go to college in order to achieve my dream social work was my only option. If I did anything else it would have been for the money I would not have been for the right respectable reasons.
When my parents first divorced in 2008, I was uprooted from my childhood home to a tiny house on the other side of town. I felt alone and confused, with no one to really talk to. Then, I was introduced to Meredith. We had dinner at my house, and immediately clicked. Soon we were going out once a month, at least, to have dinner, go to movies, or other fun activities run by the Jewish Big Brother Big Sister organization.
I am interested in admission to the Master of Social Work program at Arizona State University in order to work toward my professional goal of pursuing a career as a licensed clinical social worker. I aspire to work with people from diverse backgrounds, and I am particularly interested in working with individuals and families who may be under-represented and who face marginalization and barriers of discrimination. I strive to be a positive member of a mental health team within a community where there is need for positive representation, effective therapeutic and social work services, and continuing social change. Many experiences in my life have contributed to my interest in becoming a social worker and to seek admittance to Arizona State University
I am graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Social Anthropology with a minor in Political Science and a certificate in Indigenous Studies from Dalhousie this spring. I am very interested in this position, as I have been considering entering social work myself for the last few years. It would be a wonderful opportunity for me to experience what a career in social work would entail. I have extensive experience in researching articles and synthesizing data into essays, briefing notes, and reports both academically and professionally. I have great interpersonal skills and I value working with others as it allows for an intersectional approach.
I have spent the past twenty years working in the social work field, and my passion has not wavered. I feel that I am a strong candidate to your program, because of the many valuable experiences in social work and my desire to continue to help others. I want very much to continue my education because it will open up more career opportunities to help people that I cannot with a bachelor’s degree. If I am accepted into your program, I feel that I am able to address obstacles to successfully complete the master’s program.
I am drawn to the field of social work because it will allow me to hear the stories of people from all walks of life, and be able to put my passion for social justice and overall belief of human dignity and worth into a career that challenges me to alter my perspective on individuals and society as a whole. I plan on entering a field that I know will not be easy, but I feel that it is my calling, and I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I am fully aware that social work is a career that has a high burnout rate and that it is highly underappreciated, but I want to be able to have an impact on all of the people that I will serve, by advocating for them, but also helping them advocate for themselves. I have wanted to become a social
Personal Statement Growing up a military dependent, I attended school in the Department of Defense education system. One of the the greatest experiences I had was the opportunity to live in Okinawa, Japan for six years. I was able to become fully immersed in the Japanese culture at a young age. We had required classes about their culture, local food, and even events with schools from mainland Japan. This was the first experience that showed me how pleasant another culture can be.
Social work has been a passion since I was a young child, advocating for people whom otherwise may not be able to assist themselves. Social work offers empowerment and self-actualization to individuals to accomplish their life’s goals and being apart of that creates a self-reward, I honor with great gratitude. I chose social work as a profession after working with individuals challenged by mental illness; I wanted to make a difference not only in the individual’s life, but in my community. After pursuing an undergraduate degree in social work, I wanted to achieve the highest level of education in my field; therefore going to graduate school was an inevitable career choice.
This social worker help connect my brother to therapist and outpatient care that were vital in his recovery process. As a result of this experience I learned that to be an efficient social worker requires the ability to work with a different professional in the community to provide the best care for
