I have desired to enter the field of Social Work for as long as I can remember. Caring for others has always been second nature to me. Over the years I have been exposed to many different life experiences, which have introduced me to a wide variety of people, many of them dealing with a multitude of different life hurts which includes addiction, abuse, and mental illness. Having been exposed to such diverse life experiences, the Lord has taught me to love the hurting, and has filled me with a desire to help those in need.
I have, for many years, had a soft spot for young moms that are living with an unplanned pregnancy and contemplating adoption. Over the years, however, I have also found myself being drawn to those who are struggling with various addictions. Addiction is so

It is important to be able to have and show empathy for others especially in the realm of being a Social Worker. I have used my gift of empathy to help people throughout my life. I currently serve at my church’s Attic After School program. I currently commit 2 days a week as a leader and mentor to Junior High and High school kids. Most of the kids that come to our after school program come from broken, dysfunctional, and poor homes. The main thing that these kids all have in common is their need to have positive role models that care for them and enjoy their company. I also currently volunteer as a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. A lot of the people that come to the seat checking events are poor and need to be treated in a caring manor as they are being taught how to provide the safest traveling environment for their child. I also check the safety of car seats and make the correct adjustments in the installation of car seats. After each car seat event, my heart is warmed with the knowledge that the children that were leaving the event are now driving away safer then when they first came
The childen who are dropped off and left in Wat Opot can be confusing to not only the volunteers but also the child because the volunteers do not know where they came from, who they are or if anyone is looking for
4. Remind your kids of your expectations of their behavior. They will need to know they have to sit in their own seat and stay buckled until it’s safe to move around. Teach them that it’s a small space and they will need to be careful with the noise level.
I began my social work studies over twenty-five years ago at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. I never questioned my decision to pursue a career in social work; I loved my classes and worked hard to learn as much as possible. But the information I gained in undergraduate school simply opened the doors of my education. Most of my learning has come through constant questioning, personal research, and especially through work and life experience. Through these experiences I have encountered the challenges faced by individuals, families, and society and have been able to further access and develop the innate personality traits and abilities that originally led me to study social work as well as learn and practice the many skills necessary to be a successful mental health counselor.
My main reason for applying to the Simmons School of Social Work is that it is an accredited university with an excellent reputation as an educational institution and offers an MSW program that is predominantly online. I attended Thomas Edison State University online and earned my bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.9. Once I made the decision to continue my education, I searched for MSW programs that were available online with CSWE accreditation in compliance with New Jersey State social work licensure. I found that Simmons’s specialized program in clinical social work is well suited for my educational needs.
We met our main goal of donating three car seats, and we were also able to donate all of the other items that were on our list. In all, they estimated that our donations would be distributed to help at least 35 children in need. Knowing that we had positively affected that many children’s lives was one of the most meaningful parts of this project because that meant that we had “found a solution” which was the point of our
I’ve done a lot of research to prepare for this presentation and I have learned very much about this topic. Kids being without a booster seat can be very deadly even with just a seatbelt. The belt doesn't fit right so in a crash it can hurt them badly. Today I am going to try and persuade
The decision to take the clinical route as a second year MSW graduate student, was one that took no hesitation to make. My passion for children and the preservation of families have been a propelling factor in my Social Work career; both academically and professionally. These two entities have motivated me to remain steadfast on the journey to obtaining my MSW so I can continue to be a vessel for children and families who are in need of support and empowerment. The clinical spectrum of social work practice has strengthened my ability to work proficiently with multiple clients and perform well when assisting families in different realms of social work practice. The knowledge gained during my four years as an undergraduate BSW student and
Due to a lack of orientation to volunteers about specific safety procedures to take with children, I had one of the scariest moments of my life. On that day, I encountered a new mother, which I will call Stella. She had two kids: a one and a half year old toddler and a five-month-old boy. The baby, ‘Miley’, was so loveable and instantly cherished by the volunteers. Another volunteer and I asked Stella if we could take her outside to play with the other children. She said okay, went to get her shoes, and put them on her. It was two volunteers and four kids (from five – ten) outside
First and foremost, I am interested in the Social Work profession and desire to continue my education because I have a genuine concern for, and want to help people. Thus far in my working career, I have had the opportunity to be in “people helping” fields: in the military, as a 9-1-1 operator, and as an EMT. Such professions centered on typically giving assistance to people in compromised or life threatening situations. I desire to continue helping others, but in a more pro-active way. Having recently ended an eighteen year career as an Emergency Dispatcher, I can look back and see I made an excellent decision when I hung up my headset to pursue my lifelong dream of continuing my education in Social Work. The years spent investing in helping people in crisis prepared me to help others on a more personal level and in a face-to-face setting.
I can say that being a social worker was never in my plans. I started from Liberal Arts, because I wasn’t decided on my career choice. I took almost all courses, when I got an advice from one of my friends to try Health Information Technology. I gave it a chance and I didn’t realize how time flied by and I graduated. My dream always was to work with children. When I graduated and took my internship, that was the time, when I understood that I made the wrong choice. I needed to search for another career, because I understood, that it would not be what I meant. My father is physical therapist and he gave me and advice to think and to do some research about Social Worker. This time, I did the most research that I could, in order to not repeat my mistake again. I instantly knew, that this what I needed. All over the world, there is and will always be abuse. That’s the reality of it, but now I’m studying for Social Worker here at Lehman College, because I would like to be working toward changing a child’s reality one day, I am changing my knowledge every time I come to class, and changing my life one step at a time. I believe that it all starts with me, and while I may not be able to save the whole world, I will be able to save and help at least small part of it. I currently work in the family practice as a receptionist. My best days are those when I able to help people and provide them with all the information needed. Every day is different.
I have always known that it is my passion to help people. This is why upon graduating I attended Mohawk College to pursue a career as an Educational Assistant. After receiving my diploma I began my career helping children with special needs. On a daily basis I have interactions with social workers and children who are involved with the Catholic Children’s Aid Society. I have had many eye opening experiences during my time spent with them. I have worked alongside our school’s Social Worker and have gained insight into mental health. Being an E.A. is rewarding, but I have come to the realization that I aspire to do more for children in need; I wish to become a social worker.
Growing up I witnessed my sister and grandmother deal with serious mental illness. My sister and grandmother both were diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It has always been my passion to help them manages their episodes. Growing up witnessing these episodes I always knew that I wanted to help those who are struggling to cope with mental health issues. Social work is not just a passion of mine, but a solution to the struggles many people face every day. I learned my “caring and compassion” for others, from my mother. My early experiences were a driving force for me pursuing my master’s in social work. As a child, my mother took in adults, children, and families within our neighborhood and afar to aid them in difficult times. Whether it was for a meal, a night, or longer, she has spent her life caring for others. The passion my mother possessed for helping others has become my
For as long as I can remember, I have always had an interest to work in a field of helping others. At first my focus was on youths and how I can help those individuals in need, but then I became more interested in working with elders who can not properly care for themselves. I also became interested in working with families that are going through a difficult time in life such as a divorce or a bad living environment. These thoughts greatly influenced my professional ambition. My desire to further formalize my love for helping others has gained my interest toward the field of social work.
For a majority of my life, I wanted to be a pediatrician when I grew up. I had wanted to be a pediatrician due to my passion to work with children, in addition to enhancing the lives of children. As I continued to grow up, I realized that science is not my strong suit and I would never survive medical school. I do not recall how I learned about the profession of social work, but around the eighth grade I have known that social work was the profession that I wanted to pursue. The idea of helping others is what initially struck me as compelling because I did not understand social work in it’s entirety, but I knew that I would relish a life of helping other individuals.
I am applying to the two year program at Stony Brook University because I want to further my education so that I can pursue my goal of helping others achieve a successful and productive life. My passion originates from realizing that there is a need for social workers who can make a difference in people’s life by being supportive and providing the necessary aid needed for everyday survival. Therefore, I believe by completing my master’s degree in social work I can help build a better world by providing care and services that is imperative and vital for survival. There have been many experiences that have influenced my goal to be a social worker. I have learned through personal and profession experience that helping people can have a huge impact.
