The vision I have for my career in Social Work is so bright and endless. Within my four years here at Mason, I'm going to graduate with a BSW in Social Work with a minor in Public Health then I hope to go for my Masters as well. With my Master's in hand, I would like to work in the healthcare field may be going into the hospital field. I believe it really takes special people to get the calling to become a Social Worker and it's not a job for the weak. In the future, I hope the field of Social Work, in general, gets more respect and not just seen in the light of separating families. In my time of taking my Social Work class, I learned that Social Workers jobs all look so different.
For me personally, I think the values and ethics that
Social work is a career that finds and chooses you, rather than you selecting it. Social work has always been an immense portion of my life even when I had no recollection of what social work entailed. My life revolved around so many situations that had a social worker stepped in, my life would be totally different than it is today. Many individuals and agencies lack the compassion and empathy for oppressed people. Having been in many circumstances, has given me the experience and background that influenced me to go into social work, as well as the understanding of my role and responsibilities that I will assume as a professional social worker, and my reasons for selecting the program at ASU School of Social Work and thoughts on how the Mission Statement addresses my career goals.
I began my social work studies over twenty-five years ago at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. I never questioned my decision to pursue a career in social work; I loved my classes and worked hard to learn as much as possible. But the information I gained in undergraduate school simply opened the doors of my education. Most of my learning has come through constant questioning, personal research, and especially through work and life experience. Through these experiences I have encountered the challenges faced by individuals, families, and society and have been able to further access and develop the innate personality traits and abilities that originally led me to study social work as well as learn and practice the many skills necessary to be a successful mental health counselor.
My main reason for applying to the Simmons School of Social Work is that it is an accredited university with an excellent reputation as an educational institution and offers an MSW program that is predominantly online. I attended Thomas Edison State University online and earned my bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.9. Once I made the decision to continue my education, I searched for MSW programs that were available online with CSWE accreditation in compliance with New Jersey State social work licensure. I found that Simmons’s specialized program in clinical social work is well suited for my educational needs.
There are many goals I hope to accomplish by attaining knowledge of social work. My ultimate career goal is to establish a non-profit organization in an inner city that will provide services for children during week days and weekends.
The decision to take the clinical route as a second year MSW graduate student, was one that took no hesitation to make. My passion for children and the preservation of families have been a propelling factor in my Social Work career; both academically and professionally. These two entities have motivated me to remain steadfast on the journey to obtaining my MSW so I can continue to be a vessel for children and families who are in need of support and empowerment. The clinical spectrum of social work practice has strengthened my ability to work proficiently with multiple clients and perform well when assisting families in different realms of social work practice. The knowledge gained during my four years as an undergraduate BSW student and
As long as I could remember, I always wanted to be in a public service. Watching shows about attorneys to therapist, I wanted to help those who could not help themselves. In high school I took law class that would change my views on being a attorney to being a psychologist. I realized before one can get into the court system, something had to stem from their childhood or traumatic incident with therapy one could avoid the justice system or rehabilitate. After community college I began working with children with mental and behavioral illnesses.
Indian nationalist leader Mahatma Gandhi once stated, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. This simple yet powerful quote motivates me to remain steadfast in the mission of aiding others. I’m pursing a Masters in social work because by working in this field, I can educate, advocate, motivate, understand, and encourage resilience to clients from every walk of life. It is a profession that will allow me to practice both on a micro and macro level simultaneously. Lastly, working in social work gives me the capacity to challenge policies affecting disadvantaged communities.
When I get my degree in Social Work I hope to be working with developmentally disabled children and adults. I hope to be working with developmentally disabled people because my mom works with them so I grew up around them, and my little sister is autistic. Growing up around developmentally disabled people as well as having an autistic sister has made me feel compassion towards them and want to help them in their everyday lives do things that they are not fully capable of doing on their own. In my chosen degree there are many ways that the four subfields of anthropological training could be helpful. One of the four subfields, Archaeology could be helpful to me in my degree in social work by helping me better understand why some developmentally
I intend to earn my Bachelor's and Master's of Social Work so I can pursue a career in clinical private practice with the elderly. In addition, I will double minor in gerontology and sociology to further prepare me for my future career. Because of my credits from high school and work ethic, I will be able to graduate with my Bachelor’s in just three years, which will result in significant savings of college expenses. Due to my past experiences with bullying in which my supposed good friends over a three-year period, I always knew I wanted to work in the social work field. Since Rhode Island College has one of the top social work programs in the country, I was sure this school would be a great fit for me.
I am applying to the Pre-Masters in Social Work because it combines my interests in social justice with my skills and experience in community-based and non-profit social service programs. Since 2008, I have worked and volunteered in a variety of community organizations with a focus on empowering community to make positive change. My current work with Klinic Community Health’s Teen Talk program has been the most meaningful. It strives to incorporate decolonizing practices while using a strengths-based approach to youth prevention education. This increases youth’s capacity to make informed decisions for themselves around anti-violence issues, substance use, mental health, and sexuality.
I plan on majoring in Social Work at EWU. I hope to use that degree to become a Child and Family Social Worker. I first started to get interested in this field when I mentored a family friend for job shadow day in middle school. She is a VA Social Worker and works with veterans and military families. Seeing some of her cases and how she helps so many people, I knew this was something I could be passionate about.
My name is Sarah Cameron and I am currently enrolled at Casper College as a social work major. This spring of 2018 I will have completed my associates and am looking to pursue my bachelors degree at the University of Wyoming. When I first became interested in social work, I had already completed 2 years of coursework through Casper College and had declared majors in two fields I knew were unsuitable for me (dental hygiene and Occupational therapy assisting). I knew that whatever I majored in I wanted to be able to help people and influence their lives in a positive way. I knew that social work was a good fit for me because I am an open minded person who has a desire to help people and make a positive change in the world around me.
Since I was a little boy, I have always wanted to help others. I struggled for many years trying to find how I could best utilize my talents to help others. Initially, I thought it was with the sciences. I majored in biology at the University of West Georgia. Then, I attended medical school for two years at Lincoln Memorial University.
My interests lie in pursuing a Master’s degree in the field of Social Work. I find that this profession offers a unique mix of interdisciplinary fields; it includes theories from economics, education, sociology, medicine, philosophy, politics, psychology, and anti-oppressive and anti-racist discourse. I find this area of study very exciting. It is a fast growing area of study with tremendous potential. Social Work is a professional and academic discipline committed to the pursuit of social welfare, social change, and social justice.
I am applying to the two year program at Stony Brook University because I want to further my education so that I can pursue my goal of helping others achieve a successful and productive life. My passion originates from realizing that there is a need for social workers who can make a difference in people’s life by being supportive and providing the necessary aid needed for everyday survival. Therefore, I believe by completing my master’s degree in social work I can help build a better world by providing care and services that is imperative and vital for survival. There have been many experiences that have influenced my goal to be a social worker. I have learned through personal and profession experience that helping people can have a huge impact.
