The field of social work is boundless, and my educational attainment from the bachelor of social work program at Grand Valley State University has adequately prepared me to enter the field. However, by obtaining a master’s degree in social work, I will only be further expanding my opportunities and amassing my knowledge and understanding of diverse populations and the field. At this time, I am motivated to pursue a master’s degree in social work, because I want to serve our country and practice in the field of social work; I want to be an United States Navy Social Worker. However, the U.S. Defense Department requires social workers to obtain their master’s degree before signing with any military branch. Moreover, I am motivated to obtain my MSW, so I can …show more content…
The need to do so also offered me the opportunity to work with various populations. One of the first jobs I obtained when I moved to the Grand Rapids area was as a direct care aide at a local respite home where I worked with children with physical and cognitive developmental disabilities. The position required that I compete various trainings to better understand how to safely and effectively work with a population that requires various levels of assistance in completing tasks of daily living. I enjoyed the learning opportunities proposed, but the stress of the position and long hours negatively impacted my education and overall health. So, I resigned and took a job as a geriatric home health aide. I worked one-on-one with clients, monitored physical and mental conditions, assisted with exercises, and helped clean and cook meals. I enjoyed learning from my clients who were always eager to share about their life experiences. However, after two of my clients passed away, one of which was holding my hand as he took his last breath, I learned that I was not prepared for the emotional challenges present while working in
I began my social work studies over twenty-five years ago at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. I never questioned my decision to pursue a career in social work; I loved my classes and worked hard to learn as much as possible. But the information I gained in undergraduate school simply opened the doors of my education. Most of my learning has come through constant questioning, personal research, and especially through work and life experience. Through these experiences I have encountered the challenges faced by individuals, families, and society and have been able to further access and develop the innate personality traits and abilities that originally led me to study social work as well as learn and practice the many skills necessary to be a successful mental health counselor.
My main reason for applying to the Simmons School of Social Work is that it is an accredited university with an excellent reputation as an educational institution and offers an MSW program that is predominantly online. I attended Thomas Edison State University online and earned my bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.9. Once I made the decision to continue my education, I searched for MSW programs that were available online with CSWE accreditation in compliance with New Jersey State social work licensure. I found that Simmons’s specialized program in clinical social work is well suited for my educational needs.
The decision to take the clinical route as a second year MSW graduate student, was one that took no hesitation to make. My passion for children and the preservation of families have been a propelling factor in my Social Work career; both academically and professionally. These two entities have motivated me to remain steadfast on the journey to obtaining my MSW so I can continue to be a vessel for children and families who are in need of support and empowerment. The clinical spectrum of social work practice has strengthened my ability to work proficiently with multiple clients and perform well when assisting families in different realms of social work practice. The knowledge gained during my four years as an undergraduate BSW student and
I am interested in the MSW program at Walden University because of the objectives of the program to make sure that their students learn what it is that they are suppose too. I am also interested in the Master of Social Work program here at Walden because of the teachers working in the field and having firsthand knowledge about the field. The Master of Social Work program at Walden also have the concentration that I am interested in which is Children and Family Services. My plans for after I receive my degree is to become a license social worker. I also plan to start working at either the department of family and children services or at a local adoption agency.
I cannot emphasize enough the passion I have for child welfare services, I like helping individuals, children to be exact. I cannot see myself doing anything else with my life I never wanted to do anything else in life. I have demonstrated a great deal of capacity for success in the Indiana child welfare scholars program by a number of things: one, staying commented to one major; two presenting myself as a practicing child welfare worker; three, pushing myself to always do better in my classes. Once I knew I wanted to go to college in order to achieve my dream social work was my only option. If I did anything else it would have been for the money I would not have been for the right respectable reasons.
Ideally, I would like to save everyone that needs help, to be the shoulder to cry on, the sounding board for advice—anything that could be of help to someone. I spent a lot of time convincing myself that becoming a social worker was not a probable, that I had lost my chance because I didn’t start early enough. I then decided that I wanted a degree in early childhood education and that I wanted to work with children with special needs with the ultimate goal in opening a charter school for special needs where children could all feel as if they belonged and were a part of something. When I finally went to enroll into the program I found that the Human and Social Service (HUAS) program was available and I just took it as a sign that social work was really what it is that I wanted to do. Even as a child
Education has been an important and crucial part of my life. At a very young age, my parents instilled in me that receiving a good education would grant you a successful life. I have taken those words of advice as a constant reminder and motivation for my education. Due to this advice and many other impactful reasons, I have decided to pursue a master’s degree in social work to pursue my career goal of becoming a social worker. Moreover, with the encouragement and advice of professors that I admire and respect, I knew that pursuing graduate school and a master's degree was in the realm of achievable.
When I get my degree in Social Work I hope to be working with developmentally disabled children and adults. I hope to be working with developmentally disabled people because my mom works with them so I grew up around them, and my little sister is autistic. Growing up around developmentally disabled people as well as having an autistic sister has made me feel compassion towards them and want to help them in their everyday lives do things that they are not fully capable of doing on their own. In my chosen degree there are many ways that the four subfields of anthropological training could be helpful. One of the four subfields, Archaeology could be helpful to me in my degree in social work by helping me better understand why some developmentally
Since I was a child, I always knew I wanted to be employed in a field that involved helping others in some fashion, such as teaching or counseling, and eventually realized social work was my calling. While I struggled to decide on a college to attend since I was two years younger than the average freshman, RIC seemed to be a great option and now, I could not be more thankful for the experience. The social work program here is truly inspiring and challenging and the connections I have made, both academically and socially, will last me a lifetime. Currently, I am a junior applying to the major this year with minors in sociology and gerontology. After earning my MSW, I intend to work with the elderly since this has become my passion over the years.
When I decided to pursue a degree in social work; I decided that I wanted to become an LSCW. After achieving this, I intend to give counseling services to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. I hope to gain more knowledge and to develop skills towards providing counseling. I wish to excel at the micro level to offer the best care possible for surviving victims. I intend to finish this program with the same dedication I have shown throughout my undergraduate degree.
Late one Monday night in the midst of fall semester turmoil, a group of hurting and broken ladies began to share their burdens. I was grieved for the young women sitting before me; however, I could not discern how to react or bring clarity to their diverse situations. I could contribute my opinions, and relay advice on how to best adapt to the setting at hand; yet I quickly realized I was not equipped for this job. Attending the University of Alabama has been one of the most treasured moments of my life thus far.
I hope to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work. To help people in need mentally and physically. Maybe at a school, a government facility or a nice little office of my own. Getting good grades is not my only goal to being successful in life and in college. I wish to understand what I'm am learning to translate that into a higher purpose or calling in life.
I have reviewed the entire Bachelor's program and I am most interested in the introduction to International Relations, Sociology, General Social Psychology, and State Politics and Governance course. I am originally from Sierra Leone and have had first-hand experience with social breakdown including civil conflict, lack of education and poverty. In Sierra Leone, there was a huge problem of child soldiers. Global campaigns and national efforts have reduced the problem through the application of social science. I always inspired to be more empowered to deal with social problems in society.
I am applying to the two year program at Stony Brook University because I want to further my education so that I can pursue my goal of helping others achieve a successful and productive life. My passion originates from realizing that there is a need for social workers who can make a difference in people’s life by being supportive and providing the necessary aid needed for everyday survival. Therefore, I believe by completing my master’s degree in social work I can help build a better world by providing care and services that is imperative and vital for survival. There have been many experiences that have influenced my goal to be a social worker. I have learned through personal and profession experience that helping people can have a huge impact.
