It was a warm, sunny day in the middle of June. I held my little boy’s hand tightly as we walked through the exit of my high school. In my other hand, I felt the smooth, heavy leather case that housed my high school diploma. I had done it. I had graduated on time, same as my childless classmates. As an adolescent mother, I had beaten the towering odds that were relentlessly stacked against me. I tear rolled down my cheek as my son and I made our way back to the group home in which we lived. No one was there to greet us, or to celebrate this incredible accomplishment, but I was proud of myself, and at that moment, that had to be enough. This was a turning point in my life; I knew that I could achieve whatever I put my mind to, and if only I had known back then how right I was. From that moment on, and from every life experience thereafter, I knew I was meant to assist others in finding their strength, as well as finding the courage and motivation to achieve their goals. Through academic and personal experiences, I have formed a broad understanding of social work. I personally view the field of social work as a gigantic umbrella that overshadows a vast array of specialized careers. The social work field is made up of educated and experienced professionals that strive to make a difference in the lives of the population in which they serve. I believe social work to be a fairly …show more content…
I am certain that I desire a career in social work, and would prefer to work in a clinical setting, but with what population, I remain unsure. As cliché as it may sound, I feel that I am like a piece of soft clay that has yet to be molded into a semi-permanent shape. I have academic, professional, and personal growth that still needs to be made. I believe as I advance in my studies, and gain experience through coursework and fieldwork, I will be able to narrow my options, and pursue my desired
I began my social work studies over twenty-five years ago at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. I never questioned my decision to pursue a career in social work; I loved my classes and worked hard to learn as much as possible. But the information I gained in undergraduate school simply opened the doors of my education. Most of my learning has come through constant questioning, personal research, and especially through work and life experience. Through these experiences I have encountered the challenges faced by individuals, families, and society and have been able to further access and develop the innate personality traits and abilities that originally led me to study social work as well as learn and practice the many skills necessary to be a successful mental health counselor.
Indian nationalist leader Mahatma Gandhi once stated, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. This simple yet powerful quote motivates me to remain steadfast in the mission of aiding others. I’m pursing a Masters in social work because by working in this field, I can educate, advocate, motivate, understand, and encourage resilience to clients from every walk of life. It is a profession that will allow me to practice both on a micro and macro level simultaneously. Lastly, working in social work gives me the capacity to challenge policies affecting disadvantaged communities.
As a woman diagnosed with social anxiety,I was entrusted to be under the care of a social worker so as to help me manage my disorder. Personally, I have gone through so many experiences which collectively made me develop a deeper insight into the roles of social workers as compared to other health caregivers. Besides that, I have seen a lot of transformative supports to people who have various social problems provided through the selfless care of the social workers. Subsequently, this further fueled my ambition to study and support the most disadvantaged and vulnerable persons in the society. I firmly believe that my motivation towards helping
My life experience, coupled with my recent studies, gives me a perspective and skill set that is all encompassing in a setting that promotes and honors academic excellence. As a life-long learner, I am choosing to pursue my MSW to accentuate my professional expertise with clinical proficiency in order to serve the Latino Community, with a special interest on immigrant children, and develop emotional resilience that will last them a lifetime.
I cannot emphasize enough the passion I have for child welfare services, I like helping individuals, children to be exact. I cannot see myself doing anything else with my life I never wanted to do anything else in life. I have demonstrated a great deal of capacity for success in the Indiana child welfare scholars program by a number of things: one, staying commented to one major; two presenting myself as a practicing child welfare worker; three, pushing myself to always do better in my classes. Once I knew I wanted to go to college in order to achieve my dream social work was my only option. If I did anything else it would have been for the money I would not have been for the right respectable reasons.
Social work is a career that finds and chooses you, rather than you selecting it. Social work has always been an immense portion of my life even when I had no recollection of what social work entailed. My life revolved around so many situations that had a social worker stepped in, my life would be totally different than it is today. Many individuals and agencies lack the compassion and empathy for oppressed people. Having been in many circumstances, has given me the experience and background that influenced me to go into social work, as well as the understanding of my role and responsibilities that I will assume as a professional social worker, and my reasons for selecting the program at ASU School of Social Work and thoughts on how the Mission Statement addresses my career goals.
Growing up, I always had a knack for wanting to help others. Upon entering college I knew I wanted to work in a helping profession. I matriculated my college career as an Early Childhood Education major. My goal was to teach in low income middle schools and improve test scores of students. However, upon entering the program I knew that teaching was something that I was not passionate about. My grades began to slip and I was placed on academic probation. I was determined to find something that was for me in college. I knew that I wanted to continue to help others and after researching the many jobs a social worker can have is when I changed my major to Social Work. Choosing to major in Social Work was one of the best
Social Work is a specialized profession that provides counseling, assessment, intervention and support services to individuals, families, couples and communities who are dealing with psychosocial issues or require assistance obtaining social and health services. The practice of social work is guided by knowledge of social systems, human behavior and social resources, and is strictly regulated to protect the health, safety and welfare of people. I would love to have a career in social work. I was not sure on the career field I wanted to be in, but has I research more and conducted interviews in this field , I’m sure of where I want to be. Though I had the basic knowledge about the profession in social work, doing more research I came to a conclusion that seeking a career in this field is best for me. A Social worker is more than just a professional that helps people, but they also improve lives. The thought of helping people/children delight me in such a way that being in this field will bring me a rewarding feeling. I have always been the person who will listen, observe, and take note of one’s behavior as well as showing love and concern to a situation. I will give the best advice possible as well as encourage the person on the best solution to a problem. Though faced with confusion deciding the best career field to pursue in, social work seem to fit my personality and my purpose. Everyone has a purpose in life, and I believe mind is to help people especially
I would like to study in the area of Social Work because I would like to make a greater impact with this system that has seemed to be crumbling down. This has grabbed my attention when I have learned that my friends have been in the system as a ward of the state and was in foster homes until a home was found for them. I will be honest that I haven't studied any class that has social work because I didn't think it was relevant, but with my personal feelings on how I always found that I love to help people before I help myself I would like to put my time and effort into helping young children or children of any age. I have come to realize that my passion lies in helping people who are less advantaged than I am. I am applying to Tennessee State
Ever since grade school, I've known that what I aspire to do with my life is help people and from there on I've jumped on and off from different possibilities as to what to become. Growing up I went through difficulties such as having to deal with an alcoholic father, throughout the years he eventually recovered. Meanwhile, my siblings and I dealt with constant arguments that no child should have to deal with. I thought about perhaps becoming a social worker and provide children who are going through a storm with a newfound strength and help them know what it means to be safe.
From a young age for as long as I can remember, I have been interested in working with people and interested in how their social factors affect behaviour. I am very focused on a career that involves working with people as I feel it would suit my personality. Studying Sociology at university I believe will expand my knowledge, enable me to learn about the social interactions between people in different cultures and I believe it is important to study this as a basis for becoming a social worker. I understand that this job will be one of the most difficult and challenging jobs I will face and I am under no illusion as to what the job involves. I realise the demands on being a social worker: working unsociable hours and dealing with pressurised situations: with individuals at their most vulnerable point in their lives.
Many personal and professional life experiences have been my motivation to pursue a degree in Social Work. Although I was unaware that this would later be my profession of interest, my personal life situations caused me to have to come into contact with a few social workers. The social workers that I have had the opportunity to meet have helped me with overcoming poverty, mental illness, child abuse, emotional instability, and domestic violence. My interest from pursuing a career as a parole officer, then a physical therapist to now a Social worker all shifted to this decision based on my life. Over the years I found myself enjoying helping others in need such as when I was employed as a Correctional officer and talking an offender from committing suicide causing me to question my future and whether I was in the wrong field.
When I get my degree in Social Work I hope to be working with developmentally disabled children and adults. I hope to be working with developmentally disabled people because my mom works with them so I grew up around them, and my little sister is autistic. Growing up around developmentally disabled people as well as having an autistic sister has made me feel compassion towards them and want to help them in their everyday lives do things that they are not fully capable of doing on their own. In my chosen degree there are many ways that the four subfields of anthropological training could be helpful. One of the four subfields, Archaeology could be helpful to me in my degree in social work by helping me better understand why some developmentally
I have decided to apply for a degree in Social Work. I see it as a future career and that it is destined for me, I am confident it will lead me towards my ambitions. It interests me that I will be working amongst other social care professions which will enable me to learn new skills along with my own profession. All through my life, I have seen myself as that individual that puts others first. It gives me a deep feeling of comfort when I am making a difference to people’s lives.
Social Work is a field of interest to me because of the positive effort it contributes to society. Within the social work profession individuals are striving to improve the welfare of those in need of assistance. Social Workers assist a variety of individuals; from children, young adolescents, older adults, mentally ill, substance abuse individuals, and many other minorities; as in LGBT members, veterans, homeless people, and low socioeconomic status individuals. The broad mix population fascinates me because within this field one will always be able to work in a flexible environment. Social Work is used in multiple settings as in hospitals, nursing skilled homes, mental health and substance abuse clinics, schools, correctional facilities, community centers, child welfare agencies, employee assistance programs, and private practices.
