I truly do understand how to engage with new people and would be well suited to being able to understanding their needs as well as doing what is required of me. My Key Attributes: I would describe myself as a hardworking team player, who thrives under pressure and knows how to work quickly, efficiently and smartly to produce the best results; this is shown through my previous work experience where I increased the number of files being closely processed per day by approximately 30%, which is a great achievement on my short placement. Furthermore, at Colombia Pharmacy I managed to sell products that had not been sold by the pharmacy in a long time, also at this placement I learnt how to keep customers interested in our store by suggesting items they could buy and coming up with deals that saw items previously ignored, suddenly bought, I also had to ensure customers left satisfied and that their needs were met. Moreover, my polite, friendly and sociable manner made this position simple, but it provided me with challenges I could enjoy, which allowed me to think on my feet and solve problems
I am a Member of the Toronto Police Black Community Constitutive Committee (BCCC), where my main role is educating the police on strategies to engage with the youths, adding an anti-oppressive lens. Am also the Vice Chair of the Social Work Students’ Union; and a mentor, and lead mentor in the Tri-Mentoring program. I have made a personal vow to help create a legacy of change and a sense of community where everyone is welcomed, loved and accepted. I am motivated and driven to help the Social Work program and the Faculty of community, achieve our vision, which is to challenge the status quo and create meaningful change.
My main reason for applying to the Simmons School of Social Work is that it is an accredited university with an excellent reputation as an educational institution and offers an MSW program that is predominantly online. I attended Thomas Edison State University online and earned my bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.9. Once I made the decision to continue my education, I searched for MSW programs that were available online with CSWE accreditation in compliance with New Jersey State social work licensure. I found that Simmons’s specialized program in clinical social work is well suited for my educational needs.
The decision to take the clinical route as a second year MSW graduate student, was one that took no hesitation to make. My passion for children and the preservation of families have been a propelling factor in my Social Work career; both academically and professionally. These two entities have motivated me to remain steadfast on the journey to obtaining my MSW so I can continue to be a vessel for children and families who are in need of support and empowerment. The clinical spectrum of social work practice has strengthened my ability to work proficiently with multiple clients and perform well when assisting families in different realms of social work practice. The knowledge gained during my four years as an undergraduate BSW student and
The pursuit of a doctoral degree is both exciting and humbling for me. It is exciting that I have a clear vision of the career I want to pursue as an academic, and humbling to think of the great opportunity I could have to teach future social workers. Early motivation to enter the field of social work was in response to adverse childhood experiences with domestic violence, parental substance abuse, poverty, and homelessness —further complicated by foster care intervention. My foster care experience included five foster placements, enrollment in countless schools, countless lost relationships, and a failed adoption. Though these experiences created much hardship, they have certainly promoted resilience and helped lead me to my current ambition of seeking a Ph.D. As a recipient of foster care intervention, I exited state custody through legal permanence. Through education, advocacy, and direct social work practice with youth in residential treatment, I acquired new skills and insight to addressing social and child welfare problems. I am excited for the opportunity to promote the field of social work in the classroom and improve the lives of youth in the foster care system through my research.
My life experience, coupled with my recent studies, gives me a perspective and skill set that is all encompassing in a setting that promotes and honors academic excellence. As a life-long learner, I am choosing to pursue my MSW to accentuate my professional expertise with clinical proficiency in order to serve the Latino Community, with a special interest on immigrant children, and develop emotional resilience that will last them a lifetime.
When I first heard of human services, I was first confused with being human resources. Back then about two years ago, I made the decision to go with social work from my original psychology prerequisites. Calling the CSU, Dominguez Hills office, I was actually confused of the word human services when I actually called for information on social work. After some research with human services, I've decided to major in the field and to attend at CSU, Dominguez Hills. How I got into human services/social work, it was a long personal journey I had to take that lead me to this field.
As long as I could remember, I always wanted to be in a public service. Watching shows about attorneys to therapist, I wanted to help those who could not help themselves. In high school I took law class that would change my views on being a attorney to being a psychologist. I realized before one can get into the court system, something had to stem from their childhood or traumatic incident with therapy one could avoid the justice system or rehabilitate. After community college I began working with children with mental and behavioral illnesses.
As a veteran of the U.S. Army, I have always been committed to selfless service. It seems to be a natural transition to pursue a career as a social work educator and researcher. As an educator, I would like to enhance students' ability to observe, critique, and question the things that they learn regarding social issues. This will enable students to become stronger advocates for social justice while allowing them to think critically about how the larger societal systems have an impact on the lives of individuals, families, and communities. My pursuit of research stems from the desire to gain and add knowledge around issues that impact urban communities.
I believe that my undergraduate coursework and my work experiences have adequately prepared me for this opportunity. Upon completing my undergraduate studies, I wanted to fully engage myself in the social work field and refine my acquired skill sets through extensive education and also be able to apply this education in a practical setting. Being a first generation American, I have seen and experienced many of the obstacles my parents faced when immigrating to America ranging from financial instability, to cultural and language barriers, and to overall limiting beliefs. Seeing and experiencing this drove me to help people work through many of the same challenges my family and I experienced.
I am a Latina, a solider, and a soon to be Social Worker born to Dominican immigrants in an impoverish neighborhood in Spanish Harlem. I am the first in my family to purse a bachelor’s degree and would also like to be the first in my family to purse a Master’s degree. I will like to demonstrate to other Latino’s and the younger generation in my community that getting an advance degree is very possible. I knew that obtaining any degree would be financially challenging for me living in a single parent household. However, I know that being successfully is not an easy walk in the park.
I would like to further develop and empower my own ability to be able to leave my clients at work and not bring them home with me. I have found that when I am not at my practicum placement I replay sessions in my mind and criticize myself for what I said, think about things I should have said, and worry about how my clients are doing. I also had a client who was having severe suicidal thoughts that I was extremely concerned about. I couldn’t stop worrying about them and was crying uncontrollably at home, which distressed my family.
In May, at Arizona State University I graduated with My Bachelor’s in Social Work and a Minor in Criminal Justice. After taking my first social work class, I knew I had chosen the right field. I learned the ample areas that a social worker is involved in, and that they work for social justice and change for oppressed individuals. This ignited my passion in the field of social work to benefit others who are suffering.
Personal Statement Keeping your head above the surface in academics is no easy task. I used to find comfort in comparing my current issues with the grand scheme of things. Making these comparisons allowed me to make light of the issues at hand. For example, the importance of my homework pales in comparison to the importance of what lies ahead in my life.
Personal Statement I am currently completing my years training in primary teaching. I have a degree from Canterbury Christ Church University studying Psychology (Sport and Exercise) with a 2:2. I have traveled and worked in Asia and Australia for 16 months. I enjoy working, and find it very rewarding I am a good team member, although I am also capable of individual work. I am reliable, enthusiastic and hard-working and will bring a positive, sociable personality to any organization.
I’m a member of the mental health charity organisation Mind but I am also an avid supporter of the British Heart Foundation. In 2015 my musical society held a fundraising concert in East Kilbride, as the fundraising committee member for the group it was my job to organise all the tickets, produce and design the programme for the events and decide on which songs we would be singing. I’m very pleased to say that our one-night concert raised a considerable amount of money for the charity. I have also run The Race for Life in support of cancer research and I was very proud of my final time for the 3k run.
