What sort of career is right for me? This question is one that many young adults will inevitably have to answer, myself included. After researching the many career choices in the Behavioral health field I could certainly see myself becoming a Social worker in the state of Maine. While I served in the United States Army as a Military Police officer from 2008-2014 I was fortunate to spend a year and a half of my enlistment working in a Community Policing section. My time spent in this section would ultimately lead to my passion for helping people, families, and the communities around me. Too often do social workers find themselves under heavy stress and strict deadlines as they assist their clients balance their lives. This job requires a number of strengths in order to handle the pressure. I believe my ability to put aside my own needs to focus on the needs of others will help me tremendously. In addition I believe I know how to communicate effectively with a variety of people, keeping an open mind to their thoughts and ideas and respecting them as well as their culture. In the past as a police officer I interacted with many people with views and beliefs very different from my own. Many people find themselves continuing their education in order to advance their careers. In the article, Becoming a Social Worker: Starting Out, we learn that;
A baccalaureate in social work is not a prerequisite for entering a master’s program – a liberal arts degree will be fine. If you don’t have the undergraduate degree in social work, you will miss out on the opportunity to skip some generalist courses at the master’s level. However, when your master’s degree is conferred, you’ll be eligible for the same level of licensing. (http://www.socialworklicensure.org)
Salary
Of course one of the greatest personal rewards of doing our job is the compensation we receive for our time and services. While searching for the average salaries I discovered the average income of a social worker was somewhere around $50,000. The actual salaries varied by location and position. To be realistic I looked at the average income of a social worker from the Bangor Maine area, since this is a place I have considered moving to. According to the findings on Salary.com (2017) “The median annual Social Worker (BSW) salary in Bangor, ME is $48,535, as of January 30, 2017, with a range usually between $42,935-$54,399 not including bonus and benefit information and other factors that impact base pay.” I was actually surprised to see social workers
