Social Worker Is A Crisis Affecting People

Social work involves passionate individuals who are dedicated to helping others by providing services to vulnerable children, families or individuals in need, while constantly looking for ways in which we can improve society. This discipline is dedicated to helping people find solutions to their problems in order to make the world a better place. I chose this field of study, because I find the job of a social worker rewarding. I have always enjoyed helping others and knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s life. It is no secret that this is a challenging career; however, the feeling of knowing that you made the world a better place is indescribable. I have simply decided to make my passion of helping others into a career. I know that in order to make my passion a career I will need to get the best education and training possible.

On many levels, I secretly desire to be this professional social worker that has experienced many different realms of social work practice. As I maneuver through my first couple days of field, many questions run through my mind as to what’s to be expected of a master’s level social work. Although, I’ve only had the pleasure of working children and families as a social worker; it has broaden my desire to want to know more.

In this week’s lecture Justin Lee came to speak to speak to the class on Careers in Social Work. He led the lecture by discussing his career choices and pathway in which spoke a lot about his academic’s. Justin received his PhD at a college in Richmond, VA and when he was eighteen years old he traveled to Guatemala for academic study. In Guatemala Justin taught classes and visited orphanages where children where. As he grew older after obtaining a PhD he decided to teach classes at Barton College in Wilson, NC for undergraduate students. Modern social workers participate actively in helping people to obtain rights, services, benefits and opportunities that they might not otherwise obtain through micro policy advocacy, ?often prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations when they engage in advocacy? (Jansson, 2016, p. 21). Through community immersion, the social worker gains an understanding of the community attributes and desiderata, requiring them to utilize their experience and expertise to advocate policies that will satisfy the client?s needs (NASW, n.d.). Furthermore, when social workers immerse themselves in the community, it becomes an act of care and concern to serve the community. Compelling them to implement new changes, depict workable intervention schemes, and generate attainable treatment plans to satisfy the needs of the individuals, families and community.

The decision to pursue my education in social work at Dalhousie University was not an easy one. While I was growing up, my career choice changed all of them time, but I always knew that I wanted to do something fulfilling, in which I could “help” and support people. My mom was a nurse and always loved helping people; I always figured I would follow in her footsteps, however I learned at an early age that sciences do not come easy to me. Unfortunately, my mom lost her battle to breast cancer when I was eight years old, so I hope that by me helping people socially, rather than medically like she did, will continue her legacy.

There are so many career path options. What is good for one, is not always good for all. I have been contemplating many different options and I have finally chosen one. The career path I have chosen is to take the summer off and work at home doing day care. Then return to Argosy University in September, to start my bachelor’s degree in psychology with a concentration on child adolescents. During which, I will volunteer with a local organization called the Family Promise of Green County. Finally I will graduate with my bachelor’s degree in 2018 and get a job in Green County Human Services as a social worker. I have chosen this path because it suits my educational needs and balances my family and work needs. My only concern is not having the face to face communication, which I believe is important in the preparation of a psychology degree. However, by taking a volunteer position with the Family Promise Organization of Green County, I hope to get this experience. This paper will identify my skills and experiences needed for this path along with the skills and experiences I already have. Additionally, I will identify my strengths and weaknesses. Lastly, I will create a plan for meeting these goals and gaining these skills and experiences.

The changes that Social Workers have to face today is somewhat similar to that of Industrial Revolution because we are still dealing with economic change. We no longer need to look at the short term and temporary availability of the social welfare system, but as well as the long term. In which has been going unnoticed because our focus is no longer on every issue that needs assistant but only on ones that we feel that are important to address unlike the Industrial Revolution when every problem was being addressed and being handled. Because most problems that individuals experience stem from their environment, which we do not seem to care much of anymore because most Americans would rather stay in poverty than to actually go out and find jobs. This wasn’t common in the Industrial Revolution time because Americans were willing to work because they knew it was the only way they could provide for their family. But in today’s world most Americans would rather get government assistance than to actually provide for their family themselves and most of them now abuse it unlike then when you were grateful for being able to get the assistance. Ever since I was a child, I loved helping others. Whether it was helping my mother take care of my little brother or helping my fellow classmates with an assignment, I was always there to lend a hand. This passion continued throughout my childhood and into early adulthood. When I began my undergraduate degree at Lewis University, I knew I wanted to help people in some type of capacity. I was guided to the path of Social Work because in this field I could combine both my passion for helping others and interest in social justice. After my first day in the Introduction to Social Work course at Lewis University, I knew that I had found my forever home. This career path would allow me to help others in a variety of different settings and capacities.

Later, I graduated from CCBC and was accepted into Morgan State University’s School of Social Work. Following my acceptance into the social work program I began to appreciate the practice greatly for its diversity. I learned that the social work profession would provide me with the ability to fulfill all of my career goals. I desired to be a part of a helping profession, positively impact lives, work in a diverse environment, provide advocacy and work hands on in urban communities. The resilience and determination of people through adverse conditions has been a driving force in the reasons I choose this profession, and why I continue to choose it every day. In particular, family challenges have been an interest of mine, and I have always been captivated in understanding the social layers which affect their lives.

For the past ten years I have dedicated myself working with three’s and four year’s old as a Family Worker. Working with children’s inspiring me to further my education. At first all I wanted was a SA in Social Work. However, working with diverse family’s needs, and the economy draining the city I work in sparkle me to continue my educational goal. Currently I’m enroll al GCU to obtain my BA in Social Work with emphasis in Sociology in which I’m aiming to successfully complete it to then move on to my MA in Social Worker to become a counselor.

Every worthwhile journey begins with one step. My social work journey began when I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Utah in 2003. I thought my next step would be to immediately pursue a graduate degree. In my undergraduate career I had taken numerous classes from the College of Social and Behavioral Science and had done well in those classes. In my Social Work as a Profession course I had an assignment to shadow a social worker and write a paper about my experience. I chose to shadow my father-in-law, a social worker with over 30 years of experience, and in my paper I expressed my desire to go into the social work field. I knew I liked helping people. I knew I liked problem solving and critical thinking. I thought my 22 year-old self was ready to embark on that journey, but I wasn’t. I realize now that what I lacked at graduation was one crucial step… perspective. Over the past twelve years I have gained that much needed perspective and have taken many steps forward in my journey, and with those steps and that increased perspective, I now feel more fully prepared to begin my social work career.

Social Work is a profession that offers therapy, evaluation, intervention and treatment for anyone who needs it. Support services are also offered to individuals, families, couples, or anyone who is dealing with psychosocial issues. Services are also for people that require assistance obtaining social and health services. The practice of social work is guided by knowledge of social systems, human behavior and social resources, and is strictly regulated to protect the health, safety and welfare of people. I would love to have a career in social work. I was not sure on the career field I wanted to be in, but has I research more and conducted interviews in this field , I’m sure of where I want to be. Though I had the basic knowledge about the profession in social work, doing more research I came to a conclusion that seeking a career in this field is best for me. A Social worker is more than just a professional that helps people, but they also improve lives. The thought of helping people/children delight me in such a way that being in this field will bring me a rewarding feeling. I have always been the person who will listen, observe, and take note of one’s behavior as well as showing love and concern to a situation. I will give the best advice possible as well as encourage the person on the best solution to a problem.
