Many people in society do not seem to recognize how important social workers are. From jails to hospitals, social workers are needed in every setting. I may not have a lot of experience being a social worker but I believe that this program will help me become one. My goal in entering the social work profession is to use the experiences I have been through to help others. I am motivated by the desire to help others as well as the desire to change their world. Social workers are often the front line for protecting children and families from harm. Because the social work profession is so diverse it gives me an opportunity to work with different populations. When I complete my masters I would like to work in many the fields if possible to get different experiences. The homeless population is an area that I strongly want to focus on. I have a strong desire to help the homeless population because I feel that many individuals in society seem to just ignore them. What people fail to realize is that people do not ask to become homeless. Different circumstances lead people into poverty. As a future social worker, working with the homeless population is a goal I would like to accomplish, being to help people get back on their feet. Poverty is becoming a bigger problem and the homeless population needs to know that not everyone turns a blind eye. There are social workers to help to help them get back on their feet after the troubles they may have been through. Through my
People who work as social workers help residents who live in their community deal with a variety of intractable issues such as child abuse and drug abuse, instruct them how to obtain and utilize some community resources (such as housing and childcare) and ensure these welfare programs really work well. There are different types of social workers. For example, social workers who specifically work with children and family, those who specifically cope with mental health and substance abuse, and others who work with refugees.
When working in a field of expertise the experts in that area need to know what defines that field. Social work, with its roots over a hundred years old, started out simply offering assistance to others, has grown and changed, and is currently reconnecting with its roots (Bisman, 2004). Bisman (2004) emphasizes the importance of being an advocate of justice and keeping the field focused on the “social” part of social work. This push to keep social work focused on the needs of others defines social work today. Social work focuses on providing aide to the needy and increasing awareness of those that are oppressed.

I chose this field of study, because I find the job of a social worker rewarding. I have always enjoyed helping others and knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s life. It is no secret that this is a challenging career; however, the feeling of knowing that you made the world a better place is indescribable. In this essay I will discuss what learning from K216 materials has been useful to me whilst working with vulnerable and/or disadvantaged service users in my student placement, and what learning I have applied to my practice. Throughout I will look at how my learning informed what I decided to do, how I went about doing this and my understanding of the practice. I will discuss learning in respect of two areas of social work, which are ‘Communication’ and ‘Working collaboratively’. For ‘Communication’ I will focus on communication with service users with disabilities and/ or additional needs and I will explore a case of a mother who I had a telephone call with who was in crisis and in a highly emotional state. With ‘Working collaboratively’,
This essay will discuss social divisions; social exclusion and social inclusion, of which there are many definitions and interpretations. Social divisions and Social exclusion has been around for many years. Social exclusion was first noticed in France in 1970s in relation to people who fell outside the range of the social insurance system, such as disabled people, lone parents and the young unemployed (Townsend and Kennedy, 2004). Before 1997 Social exclusion was referred to as ‘poverty’, which means where people lack many of the opportunities that are available to the average person (Palmer; 2010). However for the purpose of this assignment, it will focus on homelessness as a social division, the relationship between exclusion and
Social work is a career that finds and chooses you, rather than you selecting it. Social work has always been an immense portion of my life even when I had no recollection of what social work entailed. My life revolved around so many situations that had a social worker stepped in, my life would be totally different than it is today. Many individuals and agencies lack the compassion and empathy for oppressed people. Having been in many circumstances, has given me the experience and background that influenced me to go into social work, as well as the understanding of my role and responsibilities that I will assume as a professional social worker, and my reasons for selecting the program at ASU School of Social Work and thoughts on how the Mission Statement addresses my career goals.
Ever since I was a child, I loved helping others. Whether it was helping my mother take care of my little brother or helping my fellow classmates with an assignment, I was always there to lend a hand. This passion continued throughout my childhood and into early adulthood. When I began my undergraduate degree at Lewis University, I knew I wanted to help people in some type of capacity. I was guided to the path of Social Work because in this field I could combine both my passion for helping others and interest in social justice. After my first day in the Introduction to Social Work course at Lewis University, I knew that I had found my forever home. This career path would allow me to help others in a variety of different settings and capacities.
Helping people is something I have always felt like I am supposed to do. The mission and responsibilities of social workers, especially as it is laid out in the Columbia University School of Social Work mission statement, seamlessly aligns with my vision for how to best utilize my experience and passions. Specifically, I hope to use social work to address social justice issues and help empower individuals who cannot advocate for themselves due to societal barriers. Experiences in my personal life and volunteer and work positions have culminated in my decision to pursue a MSW. Knowing that there is a major need for workers in the field of social services, and that my life experiences and interests are aligned with a career attuned to serving individuals, families, and

The above definition is one of many that describe social work values globally as enhancing well-being, human rights, social justice, empowerment, social change and liberation. The definition of the word 'values' differs depending on which perspective you view it from however, I will be referring to professional values. Professional values are guidelines like the Code of Practice set up by the Care Council for England that all social care workers must adhere to. As a social worker their personal values must not interfere with our professional values, ensuring professionalism at all times.
Many personal and professional life experiences have been my motivation to pursue a degree in Social Work. Although I was unaware that this would later be my profession of interest, my personal life situations caused me to have to come into contact with a few social workers. The social workers that I have had the opportunity to meet have helped me with overcoming poverty, mental illness, child abuse, emotional instability, and domestic violence. My interest from pursuing a career as a parole officer, then a physical therapist to now a Social worker all shifted to this decision based on my life. Over the years I found myself enjoying helping others in need such as when I was employed as a Correctional officer and talking an offender from committing suicide causing me to question my future and whether I was in the wrong field.
The world is changing quite quickly, and the need for social workers is going to increase over the next few years. The changing policies are coming faster than those who it effects can cope with. My hope with a degree from the Wayne State University social work program is to increase the opportunity for success and safety in adolescent populations in urban communities.

As the saying goes, “Our children are our future” and who you are as a child can determine who you can be later on in life. It is important for a child to be in a safe, comfortable and loving environment during its development so that the child can have the full advantage to become the best he can be in his future. My future career as a social worker will ensure just that. I chose this profession because of my own history. Growing up, I’ve had my share of social workers in my house. I experienced them as people who helped my family during a hard time. This is a career where I can fight for people’s rights. I will also be able to protect
