Society’s Dependency On Technology
Today, technology is a ruling factor among our society.
Technology is involved in every aspect of our lives.
Our dependence on technology has been taken to a whole other level, we are now incredibly dependent on technology.
We may be too dependent on technology, but our dependence does not necessarily impact us in negative ways. II. Some say the increasing need for technology, specifically social media, causes social isolation. Since so much time is spent on technology, these days, people tend to forget about the outside world around them (Ramey).
“Americans aged 18 and older spend more than 11 hours a day watching TV, listening to the radio or using smartphones and other electronic devices” (Richter). B. However, communication has been greatly improved by advancing technology.
Because of technology, it has become more convenient to communicate with those we desire to speak with much more often (“Benefits of Technology”).
“Modern technology has made it simple to discover our old friends and discover new people to network with [through social media]” (Ramey).
2. “Modern technology has blessed us with advanced communication technology tools” (Ramey).
“These [technology tools] can include e-fax machines, electronic mail, mobile phones, videoconferencing, instant text messaging, applications, social networking applications” (Ramey).
III.
When we use technology, our mind goes to a different world. “[…] through technology, anyone at any given moment is immediately available “here” and “there” lose their distinctive meaning” (Restak 381). What Restak meant by this is that with technology, we can be in different places mentally. For instance, we can be talking to someone in front of us and texting to someone in another country. We tend to lose focus of what’s happening in the present.
As stimulating as it may seem, people can’t deny that America is becoming very dependent on technology. Since the first computers we’re invented, scientists have (on a large scale) been flourishing on new ways of technology. From the first calculator to the x-ray machine, Americans have gotten quite used to technology in their everyday lives.
These days, technology seems to be almost everywhere we go. With advancements to cell phones, computers, video games, cars, and our iPods, our lives have become much easier than ever before. Technology is made because the society always wants to find more efficient methods of doing certain tasks. Without technology, mankind would not have discovered things that the majority of us now know, such as the world, animals, science, and the like. However, the society doesn’t gain much benefit, besides their school and work duties. Technology has become a necessity for us as a whole, although it definitely changes our mental habits. Due to advancements in technology, the United States is becoming more dependent on it, which is causing the
“Technology is a useful servant, but a dangerous master,” a quote said by Christian Lous Lange. I find it astounding how attached we are to our technological devices.Technology has attached itself to us and infiltrated our lives. Moreover, we walk around as if technology is cane for us to lean on. If we aren't careful, we could become too dependent on that cane to the point where it becomes a wheelchair. Also, in “The Veldt,” by Ray Bradbury, the children in the story become so dependent on technology to do everything for them, that they can't even perform basic everyday tasks without the help of technology. I don't want to believe that this is where society is heading, spiraling downhill into a world that is completely ruled by technology. It is so =apparent
Today’s society has advanced so this past decade. So much to the point we use it at a daily basis. Technology does have it’s perks, but are we getting too dependent on it?
I do think though that as reliant as we are on technology, it could come back to potentially bite
Technology is used on a daily basis to accomplish specific tasks or interests. Modern technology increases human capabilities and this technology has evolved with years. Technology simplifies life in so many ways and everyone defines technology in their own way. They’re new types of technology on the market, this technology simplifies our daily lives. They’re endless demands as consumers of technology, people use technology to accomplish simple tasks every day. Technology’s used in business, education, communication, healthcare, entertainment and so much more. There’s an unquestionable impact of technology on society. Whether considering the plow, vaccinations, or the internet, technology has had a huge impact on society. While not every advance benefits society, there’s many positive effects of technology. Modern technology makes life more convenient now more than ever. Modern technologies like broadband internet makes it possible to access relevant information at any time anywhere. Today’s technology makes it simple for students to learn from anywhere through online education and mobile education, which improves the education system. It also improves the health system, most hospitals have implemented modern technology in surgical rooms, which may reduce the number of mistakes made by doctors. Modern technology’s more convenient than when it was simpler because, it provides an easy way to access information, improves the education system, and it improves the health system.
1) Based on the resources provided above, how would you define technology? Be sure to use your own words!
In today’s modern world, technology reigns. Millions of people all over the globe utilize technology for a multitude of purposes every day, whether it be at work, school, or even from the leisure of their home. If you were to ask most people in America if they could live without technology even for a day, the answer would most likely be no. Contrary to opinions that are popular with my fellow millennials, I think that society is too dependent on technology. I believe society relies on technology too much because we use the internet for simple tasks that we should be capable of doing ourselves, our dependence has resulted in laziness, and technology is rapidly replacing people in the workplace, thus resulting in less jobs.
Since the beginning of time, the human population has strived to live simpler lives. We have spent generations, creating innovations within technology to ensure our lives would always be more simplistic than those who lived centuries before us. People now have the ability to update their Facebook status’, map the human genome to target strands of DNA that can be disastrous to one’s health, send out amber alerts nationwide, and create plants that are resistant to pesticides. Many fields, such as medicine, law enforcement, and entertainment have benefited greatly from advancements in technology which has inevitably changed the way society operates. However, with the abundance of technology available, society has developed an unhealthy relationship where we now rely on technology too heavily. Technology has rendered our minds incapable of the ability to play, communicate, and live our lives in the moment, despite its positive additions to our society.
A lot of people believe that we are not too dependent on technology. I spoke to my brother; he stated we just utilize it like we would automobiles or anything else like that. There is no denying the benefits of technology, however, I believe we should not get ahead of ourselves.
Technology surrounds us. Like water in the ocean, people are swimming in technology each and every day. From the radio playing a favorite song to a text received about the results of a game, people use technology constantly. However, there is a point at which people are overtaken by technology; when the wave engulfs us and there is no way out. People are becoming more and more dependent on technology. Ever since technology began heavily integrating itself into society, many major uses have developed, but at a cost that brings on dangerous side effects, both mental and physical, as shown by the potential Y2K bug, that will continue unless active measures are sought out by those so dependent on technology.
Techno-optimist or techno-pessimist? That is the question. Technology throughout time has no doubt changed our way of life. Travelling to destinations quicker, curing new diseases, or figuring out how to cease a wide famine are examples of how technology has made advances over time. The solutions that scientists create spark a tool that others cannot live without. But what if these technologies bring out negative effects rather than their desired purpose? Sometimes, innovators create new inventions that bring unintended consequences. It could range from less communication face to face, side effects from new medicines, or pollute the earth’s atmosphere.
Technology has always had an enforcement on the United States since it came to existence. Many of these tolls could be for the better, but they could also be for the worst. For example, how many of us have a smart phone that has multiple applications?
Technology is continuously developing and has begun creating shortcuts for the American society. As a society we need to find a balance between our technological use and our everyday life. In my opinion, society has become too dependent on technology. The more advanced technology becomes, the more it seems to be gaining control over our lives. Even though technology is offering society many beneficial qualities; it also is causing many negative effects to occur. Technology is affecting society socially, mentally, and physically.
