In our day to day life Sociology is constantly influencing us in many ways whether it is guiding us how to think, act, or even dress. Although our culture has these impacts on us, no two cultures are the same. Each one has its own specific set of morals and values and directly that influence the people. As we think about events in our lives, there are many major milestones that shape who we are. Marriage is one of the largest events we will experience in our lives. As this is a large event, society greatly has an influence on it. In my paper I will analyze societies influence on the practice of neolocal residence and how it differs dependent on place of origin. Neolocal residence is a post-marital living arrangement where the couple lives separately from their original households. Such practices are very common in places in North America, but as I began to research I realized this is not always the case in different parts of the world.
After some deep research into my topic I found many sources that directly show post marital patterns after marriage. The first source I have chosen to analyze is “Household Structure and Marriage in Urban China: 1900-1982” by Xiaowei Zang. This article shows patterns of couples in Urban China and their placement of residence after marriage. In the post 1949 time range many married couples participated in patrilocal residence.
