My first realization of the importance of knowing how to interact with different identities was within my creation of the hall sociogram. My hall is uniquely composed of a diverse amount of identities. In my opinion, it is a better representation of diversity than what walking on Clemson’s campus presents. Yet, they all have a longing to serve, as they live in the Civic and Service House living-learning community. When getting to know the residents, I had to learn how to connect with them separately. I couldn’t talk to all of them about the same topic, because they all share different interests and experiences. Moreover, when attempting to establish relationships with them, I realized that some residents were harder to connect with than others.
The company is in direct violation of the ADEA of 1967 which states (2)“certain applicant and employees who are 40 years of age and older are protected from discrimination on the basis of age in hiring, promotion, discharge, compensation, or terms, conditions or privileges of employment.” In this case the 68 year old employee could sue the company based on Age Discrimination and win.
After doing some research on the National Honor Society, I learned that one must demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, and service in order to be considered for membership into the National Honor Society. Therefore, by showing that I possess each of these four qualities, I can contribute to Ocoee High School as a member of the National Honor Society.
Even if the colleges are achieving their goals to get a diverse student body to the campuses, they fail to get those groups to interact. In the article “The Lie About College Diversity,” Bruni’s interpretation on diversity explains that common college diversity programs are categorizing students together with similar backgrounds. Only a number of programs accept students to interact with fellow diversity students with different cultures, backgrounds or ethnic groups. These programs do not motivate students to reach out and share their thoughts with other groups because they could get rejected. By learning other points of view and having diversity in the learning environment, it also helps individuals communicate better. Being chosen to be a candidate for a membership for the National Honor Society is such an honor to me. It shows that I have worked hard in all aspects of my life to show leadership, success, excellence and service, despite the many challenges I have faced along the way. It also proves to myself that I have worked hard to maintain my grades in ninth, tenth, and some of eleventh grade while maintaining a part time job, and volunteering at a barn in my hometown.
There is the question at hand as to what qualities I possess that could better National Honor Society. The desire to succed has always been in my life and i feel as though NHS would help me with that and vice versa. The best qualities that I can present to National Honor Society is determination to succeed, integrity for Conner High School, compassion for others and the ability to understand from all sides. These qualities have helped me succeed throughout my life and prosper to my fullest capability.
The book “Melal “by Robert Barclay takes place in 1981 in The Marshall Islands of the South Pacific. The people known as the Marshallese are the natives to these islands. Overtime other cultures began to settle on these islands also, such as the Spanish, Japanese, and Americans. Out of these three cultures the Americans were the most domineering and devastating to the Marshallese people. The Americans took over the Marshallese native land and forced all of them to live on one island in deplorable conditions. The Marshallese had their freedom revoked from them; they then had to live under the Americans rules. The cycle of socialization is a process through which social identities are created, and in effect, each individual represents and is affected by their social identity. According to the cycle of socialization, the first stop in the socialization process is outside of one’s control—one is socialized even before they are born. Our social identities are predetermined, and we are born in a world with roles, rules, and assumptions already in place. With today’s changing world and the economy the way it is, it is not uncommon for people of all ages to enter the college setting. In fact, two-thirds of students entering the college setting are classified non-traditional (Brown, 2007). Bill (2003) found that there was an 11% increase of non-traditional student enrollment from 1991-1998 displaying 35% in 91 and 46% in 1998. These numbers have since increased according to Jacobson & Harris (2008) showing that half to 75% of undergraduates consist of the non-traditional student sitting the reasons for reentering the college setting to be economic. What exactly defines a non-traditional student and what services may they need in comparison to the traditional student.

Language plays an important role in communication by bringing people together and enriching their relationships. Language can also alienate those who do not speak it properly, or at all, from those who do. The essays, Mother Tongue, by Amy Tan, best known for her book, The Joy Luck Club, and Se Habla Espanol, by Tanya Barrientos, delve into the many powers that language holds. These essays reflect how by not speaking a language in proper form and by not speaking a language at all, affects the lives of the subjects of the stories.
