The study of societies throughout the world at different periods in history is important to understanding human behaviors. Even though most sociological studies are conducted on broad topics such as crime, poverty, gender, and ethnicity it is important to consider specific events that occur. These events provide examples and evidence towards concepts and theories that are developed to explain why people act a certain way in society. In the world today there are several issues and events that relate to sociological concepts and theories. The Middle East recently has been an area of radical behavior conducted by a terrorist group called the Islamic State. Looking into the actions and events of this terror group we can understand the sociological …show more content…
They intend to form an Islamic caliphate in the Middle East using territory conquered in Syria and Iraq. They control the people they oppress by using methods of terrorism and imposing strict sharia law in the area they control. The current event article “ISIS bulldozes ruins of ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud, Iraqi ministry says” by Michael Martinez and Mohammed Tawfeeq discusses a terrorist method the group is using to display dominance over the region it has conquered. The Islamic State has been destroying the artifacts and significant cultural items of previous occupants of the territory. The article specifically mentions the ancient city of Nimrud being vandalized by the Islamic State. Nimrud is an ancient Assyrian city that “flourished between 900 B.C and 612 B.C.” (Martinez & Tawfeeq 2015). Destroying ancient artifacts is a significant issue that impacts the future knowledge of ancient history. It is an action that tries to erase the history of the region. The Islamic State claims the destruction is being conducted because of religious ideas. Even though people suggest the Islamic State is selling artifacts on the black market to preserve funds for its terrorist activity. The actions of this group are perfect for analysis because they are trying to set up their own society with an extremist view. Their …show more content…
They are using the social media as a source of producing a massive audience to their atrocities. This is also a tool for recruiting people who feel insignificant within their society. There have been several documented individuals traveling to Syria to join the Islamic State with the motivational purpose of being a part of something significant. This is something that confuses people who are watching them leave because they did not seem to be radicalized. Analyzing these events while they are happening in real time has been fascinating and educational because the actions are seen from a different perspective. The Islamic State has proven that the use of social and mass media are effective means to influence people into curiosity. That curiosity is then exploited by radicalization to perform the horrific actions this society thrives on. What if they lost their audience? Would they still be as effective at recruiting? These are the questions that could develop solutions to the largest global threat today and create new sociological concepts and theories in the

Every day, as I turn on the news, I sigh in despair. The world is a total mess; innocent civilians being bombed, slavery, and poverty still evident in many countries. Why the world is so corrupt- in 2014, is beyond me. I try to avoid headlines about the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) but the ever-growing presence of their existence has amplified so much that it cannot be ignored. ISIS is a militant terrorist group that has struck fear into the hearts of many Iraqi’s. Through the use of violence, mass rape, and propaganda, ISIS has conquered much of Iraq and Syria. The objectives of ISIS are to establish an Islamic caliphate in the Middle East. I can’t get it through my head why people would do this, especially if it would backfire on them in the long run. By making their acts of terror known to the world, they only provoke international awareness. They absolutely will not last without end in the hands of the U.S army, whom they have mocked and threatened in the past.
Comparing and Contrasting How the Three Sociological Theories View the World Steven Spears Southern New Hampshire University Abstract In the world of sociology, there are three views, the conflict, functionalist, and interactionist. Each theory can be used to view the world and its social structure. Though they can be considered independent, it behooves us to examine, additionally, the combining of these views to better elaborate on the social constructs we are witness to.
It really is pretty amazing to witness and be aware of sociological concepts in our day-to-day lives. Sociology concepts appear all around us since humans and human organizations are formed through social interactions. Over break, I noticed many sociological concepts but the one that stands out most to me is the appearance management that takes place in a customer service oriented work place. This interaction occurred between employees and their supervisors. I am a Helping Hands employee at Wegmans. Wegmans is a grocery store in the Mid-Atlantic states that is known for its customer service. It is in this customer service setting that employees manage their appearances. In order to be seen as a good employee to supervisors, employees utilize
1. Sociologically, what is crime? How does the sociological study of crime help police, the courts, and the correctional system deal with crime in society. The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, commonly known as ISIS, has frightened the whole world by committing attacks in the Middle East, Paris, and San Bernardino, California. ISIS claims to be the legitimate ruler of all Muslims and it operates the Muslim world. ISIS was able to expand as the result of local groups conflicts with Western interests. Daniel Byman declares that local groups are attracted to ISIS for genuine conviction. Particularly, young men believe that ISIS is the defender and avenger of Sunnis worldwide. On the other hand, some groups join ISIS for accessibility to financial and technical aid. While , ISIS grows beyond Iraq and Syria, religious intolerance is created. The group delivers its religious beliefs by barbarian acts, such as beheading and rape to intimidate their enemies and obtain supporters.
They know that most of muslims do not accept their ideology so they use social media to brainwash young muslims and new converts to join them. ISIS preys on vulnerable and disillusioned western youth from economically disadvantaged families that many of them had criminal background. They rarely go to mosque to recruit. These young people want to become hero. There are many in ISIS territory that chose to join ISIS to put food on table for their family. They see no other way out. Either they have to die of hunger or fight ISIS and get killed.
It is very plausible that social constructs and environmental influences greatly impact the decisions and conditions of communities and the people that reside within them. All around us we can see evidence that may formulate our opinions and sway our opinions for good or bad. It is important not to forget that depictions of criminals, their habitats or way of life, can be misconstrued by media outlets and other press coverage. It is rare that the whole story told, so we must research deeper into matters and combine facts to fully comprehend the situation. In turn, this will produce the most accurate answers, or reasons behind acts committed.According to author Frank Schmalleger, "Places can be criminogenic because they have certain routine characteristics associated with them or because they provide the characteristics that facilitate crime commission." This has to be a true statement, if not partial, since history shows us that crime tends to occur in rowdy or overwhelmingly poor areas. At the same time, crime also occurs in less dangerous zones, albeit less frequently. It is my
As cliché as it seems, from a young age I knew I wasn’t like most other kids my age. My parents made no pretense of the existence of urban legends like Santa Claus. My parents were born in China in the 1960s, and grew up at a time when the Cultural Revolution was in full swing. During this time, practice of religion was forbidden and Maoist thought fostered an emphasis on hard work in school. Despite indirect effects on me, it was - and still is - hard for me to fathom such a drastically different environment compared to modern American society.
In addressing the behavioral and psychological factors, I will identify what vulnerable people are and how they are influenced into recruitment of terrorist organizations. The comparisons provided will be associated to radical Islam and referenced with Mubin Shaikh own experience, as he was radicalized, then recruited for, and then de-radicalized from Radical Islam throughout. On completion of the reasons of how and why individuals join terrorist organizations, I will provide examples of programs of disengagement that are used for de-radicalizing imprisoned or individuals wanting to leave terrorist organizations. Nevertheless, the discussion will then turn to possible deterrents or methods to counter terrorist recruitment efforts.
Many sieges, beheadings and other terrorist attacks are what ISIS is most famous for – hated by the world for killing their loved ones – but why do they do it? “They wanted to control the entire world. To annihilate the infidels, the Christians and creating an Islamic state. One Islamic state” – Amir Ahmed Ali. (ISIS Fighter: We wanted to take over the world. Rudaw. N.p., 30 Mar. 2015.). Many people are afraid that this violent religious group is unstoppable, and that they will in fact take over the world. The culture of ISIS is extremely religious with “carefully considered beliefs.” (Wood, Graeme. “What ISIS Really Wants.” The Atlantic. Atlantic Media Company, 15 Feb. 2015.) So if they are so religious, do they perceive themselves as violent, or do they think they are doing the right thing? It is hard to answer, but all anyone knows is that violence is in their culture. The dominant culture of most people in this world find ISIS extremely hard to understand, and to most of the world, this group is viewed as one of the most dangerous groups ever to live. This is why the culture of ISIS can inform the study of violence, and help gain better
In a study, it was revealed that there was a significant amount of active ISIS members through the social media platform of Twitter. According to an article by Jonathon Morgan and J.M. Berger, it was estimated that between September and December in 2014, there was roughly 46,000 Twitter accounts belonged to ISIS supporters (Morgan and Berger). While this might not seem as good news to people from outside the group, for ISIS, it is their main method of communicating themselves with the rest of the world. It is during this stage, the stage prior to the active phase, that group members of ISIS want to grow in order to proceed towards becoming a much more stable institution worldwide. While it might not seem right that ISIS members are broadcasting their messages to their people back home, they are simply following the ever so common characteristic of becoming known from Eric Hoffer’s book of stable

Even though a well-informed person might question why the study of sociology is related to my chosen field as an accountant I know how valuable the study of sociology is with regards to the attention to detail and person-to-person human interactions I am committed to in my field. There are important links between working with financial data and interacting as a team member polished in interpersonal communication skills. Accountants are not always holed up in quiet rooms with no windows, keeping the books for small businesses or a well-established company. Accountants are an important spoke in the wheel that drives a team, and their ability to achieve a greater awareness of themselves though learning important sociological concepts including knowledge of organizational citizen behaviour (OCB) and perceived organizational support (POS).
