Sociological Imagination By C Wright Mills

For this assessment I will look at the meaning of the sociological imagination, describe two sociological perspectives and look at the legislative frameworks surrounding them. American sociologist C Wright Mills one of the most influential social conflict theorists, in 1959 penned the thought process around a sociological imagination. He documented that people and their lives are influenced by factors rather than people being their own decisions and deciding their own destiny ‘neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both” He believed that our lives are influenced by the structure of society, history and the variety of men and woman. As well as three factors, he states the connection of our personal troubles to public issues is important as our own personal situations are influenced by public issues. He introduced the concept or sociological imagination and by doing which, people are able to have the ability to “think yourself away from the familiar routines of everday life” therefore you are not getting caught up in a routine but instead taking a moment to step back and think about things from a different or new perspective. Looking at unemployment, you may consider that a person who is unemployed is in the situation due to their own personal circumstances, they are unable to get a new job and have been unsuccessful at recent job interviews.
