CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION TO STUDY There are many sociological theories that can provide people with a different perspective than what they might already believe. Sociological theories help to explain and foresee the social world that we live in. Sociology has three major paradigms; functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interaction. This discussion uses the three paradigms; in order to gain a deeper understanding of child abuse in today’s society. Each of the paradigms looks at a different perspective on child abuse and tries to view it in a different light, using their own examination. Abuse is present whether or not it is perceived by perpetrators, victims, or observers. It is possible to think of abuse as predetermined and all abused children could be identified in one way or another. Functionalism places responsibility for violence, abuse, and neglect on the lack of integration of the abuser in the world they live in. The solutions to abuse are aimed toward clarifying expected roles within the family structure, re-integration of abusers into social life, and punishment for the abuser. Functionalists believe that maltreatment towards children is important because it is visually perceived as a threat to the stability of the community. It varies from the traditions, and values, that make up social organization and the social roles that exist for individuals. On the other hand conflict theories, focus on the contradictions that exist in societies. Conflict theory sees society as the ground within which these issues are resolved, to the benefit of the powerful and at the cost of the weak. Conflict theories believe that society is not based on shared norms or values as the functionalists believe. Instead these theorists believe socials order is maintained by authority and power. While functionalists believe change to be bothersome, it is a very important part of social life from the conflict perspective. The critical concern of conflict theories is justice, equal access to supplies and services for all community
