Socrates Accepting In Plato's Crito

Socrates, a classical Greek philosopher, is on trail for which he is found guilty for not paying his respects to the gods recognized by the state in his work and corrupting the youth. While in jail, his very wealthy friend Crito offers him an escape plan, which he adamantly refuses. I agree with the reasons that Socrates gave for refusing to accept Crito’s offer to help him escape. Socrates had many reason for why he was willing to die. Escaping prison would go against Socrates’ beliefs; he feared for the life of those he loved and he knew he would not have an enjoyable life if he did.
Socrates was extremely loyal to his beliefs and ended up dying for them. In Plato’s Crito, Socrates says “I cannot, now that this has happened to us, discard …show more content…

When Socrates was speaking to the Crito, he is asked “you are not considering me and your other friends, are you, fearing that, if you escape, the informers will make trouble for us by saying that we stole you away, and we shall be forced to lose either all our property or a good deal of money, or be punished in some other way besides?(Crito, line 44e)” Socrates then responds to Crito, by saying he is taking the lives of his family and friends into consideration when he makes his decision, which is understandable. Although his children may become orphans after he dies, they were already orphans. A father on the run or in hidden, is almost like not having a father at all. The idea of putting the ones you love in danger because of the decisions you made in your own personal life is enough to drive someone insane and the guilt would be unbearable.
Being alive does not mean that you are living. Socrates is a very intelligent man and he knows that death was his only true escape. If he took Crito’s offer, he would be imprisoned for the rest of his life. He would not be able to do anything and would have to live in a constant fear of being captured and that is not a live that anyone wants to live.
