Darry is the oldest brother between them all. The parents had died in a car accident. Darry has to raise sodapop and ponyboy while having a job. Darry has a hard life between parenting and having a job. parenting can be very hard when raising two people like sodapop and ponyboy. Having a job as roofing and at the gym can be hard while raising them. Darry goes to work everyday at the gym and roofing. When darry goes to his job as roofing, he gets his location, then he goes there. Once he is done doing the job he goes to the gym. After he does that, he drives home. When he gets home he will cook dinner for sodapop and ponyboy. Darry is real strict on ponyboy because he doesn’t use his head, but ponyboy is smart and gets good grades in school.
He has to act as a father figure to his brothers, Ponyboy and Sodapop, because their parents died in a car crash a few months earlier. Because Darry is intimidating, rigorous, and caring, he has a very large impact on Ponyboy throughout the novel.
When we saw the movie and the book and saw the movie, there were a couple of thing that they did not mention or did in the movie. In the movie they cut out some thing from the book. They did not really put everything they said in the book into the movie. They also did not really get some people personal feature. Here are something that were different from the movie, than what it said from the book.
Additionally, Darrel Curtis is another hero in the book because he works two jobs: to keep Ponyboy in school and to keep the family together in general. Furthermore, Darrel gave up his future to stay back and support his brothers through their childhood. In addition, Darrel also got rid of his Soc friends so he could support the gang. A quote to support this is on page 48 when the text states, “and Darry, getting old before his time trying to run a family and hold on to two jobs and never having any fun” (Hinton). This quote supports the claim because it tells about how Darrel is forced to take up a role as a parent because his parents have just recently died so he is Ponyboy and Sodapops legal guardian. And because of that, Darrel works two
Due to the love of his brothers he is very overprotective. He makes it clear that he protects them and worries about them when he stats this, “I reckon it didn’t occur to you that that your brothers might be worrying their heads off and afraid to call the police because something like that could get you two boys thrown in a boys’ home so quick it’d make your head spin.” (_pg.50_) No matter what happened to his parents he will always be sad, but he doesn’t let that stop him, he still stands up for his brothers. He worries were they are and decides what slides. He watches out for them even if they are mean to him. Darry says a statement that only parents that are caring say which is, “ Yeah, since it ain’t a school night.” (_pg.14_) He wants him to get his rest and have fun like any other parent would and worries about how he does in school. With these two examples from the novel everyone should know he is protective of his younger brothers. He’s changing for the good throughout the novel and that’s a good
Lying in bed, staring at the ceiling. I was so bored that I was going to meet up with the gang when i heard yelling from the other room. “ Johnny get in here and clean this room! It’s a mess and I ain’t gonna raise messy children.”, said Dad. I knew i hadn’t made that mess. They got drunk and threw a lot of things everywhere. But, my parents just don’t like me much and I’m used to that. After I finished cleaning the room. I immediately went into the kitchen. They don’t care about me at all. They wouldn’t even care if I died. It was a late afternoon and I was starting to get hungry. I looked in the fridge for something to eat. There wasn’t much. Just baked beans, a loaf of bread and ham. I decided I would have a ham sandwich.
Darry used to be in high school. He also used to be the captain of the football team. When he graduated he was awarded a scholarship to college but did not go. The reason he became so serious about life was because of his parent’s death. Now he has two jobs and must take care of his two younger brothers Soda and Ponyboy. Darry is serious when it comes to Ponyboy. He always yells at him to use his head and to take school seriously. The street changed Derry because now he has no time for fun in his life. His life is always serious and full of
I was thirsty and hungry, but my stomach was so uneasy I knew I wouldn’t be able to hold anything down. Darry had pulled the armchair into the bedroom and was asleep in it. He should be at work, I thought. Why is he asleep in the armchair?” (Hinton,p.156).In this part of the book was showing how Darry is willing to keep his brother Ponyboy protected and would do anything to be by Pony’s side. Another example is; “There was another column about just Darry and Soda and me: how Darry worked on two jobs at once and made good at both of them, and about his outstanding record at school; it mentioned Sodapop dropping out of school so we could stay together, and a that I made the honor roll at school all the time and ab might be a future track star… Then it said we shouldn't be separated after we had worked so hard to stay together.” (Hinton,p.108).This paragraph showed how hard Darry works in order to keep food water and shelter going to Ponyboy’s and Sodapop’s needs, plus he has two jobs meaning Darry works hard for him and his brothers.Though Darry keeps Pony healthy, well educated, and out of trouble, but there are some things that Darry does that shouldn’t let Poney do for example:“Two-bit left me sitting on the bench at the bus stop while he went to a gas station to buy some cigarettes” this example shows how Pony is hooked on Cigarettes
Ponyboy Curtis has lived a very rough life. Both his parents died, leaving him, Sodapop and Darry to take care of each other. Darry had to get a job and stop going to school; he looked out for his brothers the same as their father figure which they had lost. Sodapop stopped going to school because he felt that he was too stupid, as for Ponyboy he had to stay in school and always bring home good grades. The three brothers still have to look out for each other and stay out of trouble as much as possible. In the church, he starts talking about a poem and doesn’t know exactly what it means. Each line can be compared to his life, past, and current experiences, along with his
The relationship between Sylvia and her mom was a strict one. The strict parenting of Sylvia’s mother eventually began to cause problems because Sylvia had began facing relationship issues with other boys, knowingly her mother’s point of view on relationships, Sylvia continues. In the book/movie called outsiders Ponyboy with an immense amount of strictness by his elder brother Darry, even though Darry also had a younger brother named Sodapop who was the middle sibling out of the three brothers. Darry only seemed to be strict on Ponyboy who was the youngest, by being extra strict on Ponyboy. This indicates Darry gives special supervision towards his youngest brother, Ponyboy. This goes on to show Darry is always more in control of Ponyboy
In the text on page 50 it states, “He should never yell at Soda. No one should ever holler at my brother. "You don't yell at him!" I shouted. Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door.” This is when the relationship took a turn for the worse, Darry out of anger hit Ponyboy because Ponyboy got home extremely late. On page 50 it also states, “It was plain to me that Darry didn’t want me around. And I wouldn’t stay if he did. He wasn’t ever going to hit me again.” This shows that the one little mistake that Darry made, is the end of the straw for Ponyboy. On pg 51, it states "He didn't use to be like that... we used to get along okay... before Mom and Dad died. Now he just can't stand me.” This shows that Darry is struggling to cope with the loss of his mom and died as much as the others. He feels that it is his job to be like the parent, and because of Ponyboy being the youngest, he gets to have the “parent” Darry and not the “brother” Darry, their relationship with each other suffers from
Darry worried sick, lashes out physically at Ponyboy for returning home at a late hour causing Ponyboy to escape into the night where he enters a grotesque blood laden scenario that ends with a rival gang member dead and his friend Johnny holding the sticky switchblade. At this point, Dally a hardhearted greaser, except when it came to Johnny encourages the boy's to go on the lamb and aids them in escaping to an old abandoned church in the country. Ironically the serene church is the backdrop for catastrophe. After a brief errand to the local diner with Dally, the boys return to the church to find it engulfed in flames and an elementary school outing in progress. Piercing screams emanating from the church cause both delinquents Ponyboy and
Quiet: the universal symbol of peace. That’s how it started. Then I heard it, the ringing, the complete rival of the quiet. I got up. I had slept for two hours and I had school that day. “Darn! That narrative took all night!” I picked up a pack of Kool from my bedside table that I shared with Sodapop.
Ponyboy Curtis - The novel's fourteen-year-old narrator and protagonist, and the youngest of the greasers. Ponyboy's literary interests and academic accomplishments set him apart from the rest of his gang. Because his parents have died in a car accident, Ponyboy lives with his brothers Darry and Sodapop. Darry repeatedly accuses Ponyboy of lacking common sense, but Ponyboy is a reliable and observant narrator. Throughout the novel, Ponyboy struggles with class division, violence, innocence, and familial love. He matures over the course of the novel, eventually realizing the importance of strength in the face of class bias.
At the beginning of the book, Ponyboy is in intelligent, young teen, but he lacks the perspective to understand the environment around him. He can only see his side of the story and fails to understand why others act the way they do. The first example of this is his oldest brother Darry. He thinks Darry hates him because he is always giving Ponyboy a hard time about his lack of common sense, his grades,...
“You’re outta your territory” I said in a low voice, “You better watch.” After I said that, I realized that i said nothing to scare them off. Ponyboy seemed pretty mad, but not as mad as what the socs did to us. I must have started to zone for a few seconds but all I saw was Ponyboy spit at the Socs and we all started running. But not for long, I suddenly found myself on the floor. I must have tripped over my own feet. A soc came to me, kicked me and yelled “Stay on the ground.” And went to go help the other Socs help drown Ponyboy. I felt something in my back pocket. It was my pocket knife. I suddenly had a weird feeling.
